Imagine being invited in to said house while holding a camera that is recording... You all seem to miss the damn point. Wherever you go, there will be bad people and scams. If you learn what they are, you can avoid them and get a real taste for how the country is. Im sure most Nepalese are great friendly people, but also there are people who will try to high pressure sale you on items you dont want or need. This isnt a hate on Nepal, its how to bypass the BS and find the real country.

@@reedbitwindalynes7879 everybody has access to google what they are doing could easily be represented as a scam. They are luring people into a place by saying "Come to my art school" with the entire intention to sell them something by making them feel guilt or incredibly awkward. There were multiple people attempting to lure him in before he went with the one guy as the videos shows. So all the artist just roam the streets looking for people to sell to why not just put your artworks on your back or on the side of the road why the plot to lure somebody in and misrepresent another persons art for profit. Plus the entire fact the art isn't worth anything they are selling it for shown in the same video... Scammer, Swindler interchangeable words of what these people are doing.
Scam or sales technique? Lol. At least you’re not in danger of being robbed or held at gun point for your wallet in Nepal. This stuff is pretty mild, Karl.
Not a tourist trap... In a tourist trap... people pay willingly and know what they decide what they want. Tourist feel happy and satisfied afterwards. As for these scammer businesses.... they lie and annoyed to get the tourist to pay for something just so they can leave... Tourist feel like they were scammed.
I'd say it's a scam. They misrepresent the art by pretending it's more laborious to produce than it really is and that it's more valuable than it is. Some of those things are little more than prints that may have been produced by the hundreds by a machine in China. They have a few people making actual pieces of art so it feels legitimate.
This is hilarious!! Putting up "THE BIGGEST SCAM" to lure viewers in the title; wherein this is just another tourist trap!! Well, labelling art as "beginner or master" is hard!! And, I don't believe you or me has the right to say outright that this is "fake or beginner level" without ACTUALLY KNOWING ABOUT ART!! You can always bargain, or simply walk out!! That's your choice!! People won't grab your legs or hands and keep you captive for god's sake!! Take Herald Baldr for example, he exposes stuff, but, he is non-judgmental and gets pure love in return!! I believe you ought to just accept that regardless of place or country, there can be good or bad people. But, honestly, I don't believe any one in this video tried to "rip you off" or actaully "SCAM" you!! You can argue as you like, but this is going too far, I believe! Regards.
isn’t that handmade thangka? If it is and haven’t come from the same artist then isn’t it understandable they would have different price? It is not buying iPhone from different stores at different price, you were looking for handmade ART. While they might have tried to charge you higher, you can’t cal them scammers yet bro. Did you try bargaining? No, you didn’t. You were just after a video content.
Yeah but in the second store he did not bargain either and not to mention it was not just the issue of price they were trying to guilt trip him by saying it will support thier school and families kind of implying it to be a donation when actually that is not even a school. I agree about the price thing ppl are free to charge whatever they want but getting tourists into the store calling it an art school, faking ppl actually painting the thing in that place is very scum baggy. Karl is not doing this for just the views/content he is warning not to trust ppl who try and lure you into that store. The fact ppl are being almost forced to buy it is horrible and there is no excuse for it.
@@cyberclaw3641 how did you know that it's not a school? A Thanka painting school doesn't have to look like a traditional boarding school.. the students stay side by side on the mat and learn to paint in their respective canvases
@@cyberclaw3641 I interpreted this part of the video differently.. I think he's saying that this woman is a professional who's making a master-level painting and she's doing slowly with great details.. also this girl's shop is on the main street where he goes past every day and it is not the one he visited on the upper floor just before that clip in the video
The mumbling is short and seems to be in different local language that I don't understand... The master thanka paintings cost thousands of USD actually... In Nepal, prices and quality of products differs in every shop... So you have to hassel through every shop to get the worth of your money... Nepalese also goes through these hassel, not only foreigners... So the guru mantra is, learn to say no, if you are not satisfied....
I think that was Nepali, sounds like he said “ Kaam na Kaam, herna matrai” that’s all I could make out but looking at the situation, Karl went to the shop to just look at the paintings and didn’t buy them so that’s probably what the guy was saying
Tourist Trap or Street Hustle might be the appropriate term in this case. A Scam would be attempting to sell fake or copied paintings as genuine original artwork. Like that time where people were trying to sell non-cashmere as genuine cashmere, that’s a scam.
Selling something for 2x it's market value to someone who doesn't know that this is what is going on is a scam. Cooperating to manipulate a market so that the value of an item is artifically inflated is also a scam
A lot of people here are mad at Karl because the two guys show a good character (Being humble and it's not for the money) which as well kept me questioning Karl for a moment then I backed up. Just keep in mind that: - Same work in found somewhere else for half the price. - Karl wasn't looking down at the "Student level painting" but more focusing on the price range (Double price for less quality work). It's just that this situation is pretty different from the regular content of what we see. Hard to see scam related to Art. However, I wouldn't personality have sympathy for the guys charging double because they are not harming Karl, they're harming the real artists working hard to sell their work for an honest price. So don't be mad at Karl for pointing out the obvious!
The main issue why it is called a scam is simply because they are lying about literally everything. They are putting on a whole show and it 's all a scam. These are not their own authentic paintings. They steal these paintings from real artists, and then just color them. These are not their own paintings, these are copies. That is why they are worthless. So not only do they steal the work from the artists who made them, they also sell these worthless copies for much more then they are worth. This is terrible for the artist industry. It is stealing from the people who actually have the talent to make a painting like this.
The definition of scam are called "Dishonest Scheme", they sell some goods to tourist but the price are multiple expensive than the local. If this not scam i dont know what to said
Honestly loved some of the student paintings more than the master paintings in my school when I was trying to be a good artist. I failed badly at continuing my art path. But art is subjective. Some pieces spoke to me that Artificial bots did and I still have them saved in my phone because I love them. If you love an art piece and it makes you cry, then it’s worth it. But don’t ever buy from someone pressuring you and pestering to purchase their art. I hate that about sellers and it makes me leave the premise
It's not a scam we have to pay more than 2000$ for an iphone which is just 1000$ plus in your country now can I say apple is doing scam in Nepal?wtf are u trying to prove?

As a painter, setting your own prices is a incredibly hard decision (to me at least), as this video states there's different standards for everything and therefore this scam is incredibly easy to pull off as being a legit and honest business.. judging how much someone else's art is worth? prepare to be laughed in the face by these scammers.
The two paintings shown in the videos are of similar designs but different sizes due to which the prices are different. Karl rocks tried to make it look like a scam because his content is based on that.. Nepalese people are hardworking and honest. We don't force until you are interested... We respect tourist and our cultures teaches us to be welcoming towards the guests.
yes i would not call this a scam. it is clearly and obviously hand made real art, as they showed a woman working on it. So we cant call this a scam. We can call their sales tactics immoral though.

Hey there, I'm from nepal and one of sir karl's very old viewer. Actually, love watching his videos getting to know about the scams that happens in different part of world..i basically assumed him to be a very nice guy as he informed us viewers about the scams and i assumed it to be really very useful. Though, after watching this video i'm too disappointed..i clearly know how we locals treat the visitor in our country..we love to serve people from different part of world who visit our country..we basically try to communicate with you assuming you to feel comfortable around.. To every bright side exists some dark side, everyone knows that..but in this video, everything he goes through seems he himself is trying his best to show himself to be scammed.. i dont know what his problem is, he has alternative to simply say he doesn't want any goods he's okey with no company. While talking about the art, every piece of art created is unique..no rates or levels is supposed to be put onto art.. thanka represents our culture, art of living and basically everything..the person in video surely wanted him to buy one of the piece though he didn't create any buy or die situation..sir, can't it be called as promoting the local art instead of scam..? You could say that you didn't want to buy and could leave easily..there was no problem.. Each thanka painting requirs years of practice..the artist simply devote their whole life trying to be better..the art itself takes months to prepare.. people who know all this passion, effort know how to respect the art but sir you're simply out of the league.. Maybe i'm being too fierce about this topic but..is being friendly a crime..?? I'm done after this video sir..the actual scammer is you..who prepares such fake content just for views..?? I have also come to know about your history in india.. it's your personal matter so i don't want to disclose it.. I have been to Nepal for more than 4 times, never been scammed ever. Most of the time I have booked my room at Thamel. I'm American and they say that Art is a scam here, because you can charge a million for a random splatt and not pay taxes from the income you received on your painting. I get what you mean Karl but it's kinda bogus to call them scammers when we have worse types of scams in the West .
The difference is that these scams prey on foreign tourists and lower to middle-upper class individuals. Western art scams focus solely on the 1%, rarely ever on an honest individual, especially someone who’s a tourist or not from the West
It's not a scam. They just try to make living. There is no law saying asking huge price is legal. If you do not want you do not buy. No force involved.
As a Nepali, I can't decipher the mumbling so unfortunately can't help you. Yes, the culture of bargaining is rampant everywhere in Nepal even for us Nepalis When you go to shop to buy a cloth, you can never be sure if the price is 1X or 2X or even 4X. All depends upon checking online.
The price is not the issue. The issue is that these are copies, while they are lying to their costumers that they are authentic pieces made by themselves. If I bought an art piece from a famous artist, copied his work, and sold it for the price of the original, that would be theft. The people who are the victim of these scams are the actual artists.
what should we call the europeans, americans, etc who sell almost 10 times the original price? and which is kind of normal around there. like the hemp bag which is imported at rs.650(5$-6$) from nepal and sold at 40$ in europe, etc
It’s ok that Nepal has annoying street hustlers. We can use reasoning to understand this is not the entire country. After studying in Lhasa years ago and seeing one of the only remaining genuine Tibtan Thangka foundries, one of the most forgotten elements is that the eyes of every depicted Buddha MUST be painted last. This is both a method of the art and a ritual. Painting on the eyes is considered "awakening the Buddha", and is always done very last. You can see in some of those paintings at the "art school" the Buddha's eyes are painted on.

it's funny how Karl has been in Nepal for so many days yet all he posts are these click bait "scam" videos. There is SO MUCH to travel and treasure in Nepal, but he has been stuck in Thamel for days hunting for someone to approach him, just so he can make these clickbait "scam" videos. Also if Karl is such a huge traveler, he should know that things are pricier in major tourist areas and to go slightly far away from tourist hub for much better prices. Be like Harald Baldr. I did meet a local in Bhaktapur who cooked dinner for my friends and I. He ended up being our guide for our trek to Nagarkot then Chitwan. He was an honest man supporting his family and very negotiable with his rate. My worse experience was at Pashupatinath when I was being bothered so much by a “guide”. I can tell even the locals were annoyed by him
I just realized, you came to Nepal to meet your wife because you can't go to India due to blacklisting, and Nepal is most convinient for your wife due to open boarder which is completely understandable. I laughed when Karl thought the painting was 390 Nepali rupees. Even the print copy would cost more than that. Thangka painting is a traditional art and requires a lot of practice and days of work.
I'm in Nepal where their currency is Nepalese Rupee, so it was strange to be given prices in $USD. I think they do it as a trick, because रू 46,000 is a lot of money. Real Thangka paintings usually take months and you can expect to pay thousands of rupees (even hundreds of thousands because some are made of real gold), but not for this stuff at that store.

I dont see what the fuss is here everyone is saying Karl should of brought the painting or he is being harsh. Like what he is only giving us in sight on situation. Like yes he would be interested in the painting they where amazing but very high in price and they target him because he is foreign and white. They Guilt trip him and say they would lower the price. Guys he dosen't owe anyone anything he can say "No". Stop getting upset if you feel bad you go buy one insted. His video his opinion.
I don't know these salesmen are trying to act smart or your trying to act OVERSMART. First of all you have no intentions to buy or even bargain while every shopkeeper will tell you a higher price first in tourist area but your there for the footage where you can defame whoever you wants to claim as a scammer. People like you should stay in your own country and sort out your own problem instead roaming around others countries and making money out of youtube by sharing selfish content like this.
@@marcusrambo4737 man, u must be out of ur mind if u think this was a scam... Or maybe u r spending too much time inside ur mom's basement... This poser fishes for these kinda videos, in one of his videos he even said im undercover when a "fan" approached him in india... That was an amazing art and those people were marketing their product, this guy is cheap as hell, anyone can tell this guy wasn't interested in buying that product and see fault in the product no matter how good it was.. when u r fishing for something u are gonna catch it sooner or later and this guy was fishing for a "scam" content so hard he just caught it, but in this case he was fishing for a tuna, instead he caught a discarded toilet seat.. as in he didnt catch what he was looking for, unfortunately, and his fishing skills seemed questionable😂😂😂
How can you say that, they are scammer?? While they are doing their marketing as possible. Your intentions is to show them as a scammers. There are thousands of beautiful things in Nepal to showcase. You literally try to provoke them so can show them as a scammers. JUST BECAUSE YOU NEED RU-vid VIEWS, How can you say them Scammers.
in the video a street hustler has said to you that "he is doing this to help his family who only takes 10-15 usd commsion from shopkeeper and at the end he also said that he is not trying to force you to buy the painting and happily let you leave". He has been very polite and respectful to you even he is a street hustler "
For him everyone is a scamster and everything is a scam...he has lost his plot big time...He does not know or pretends to not know the difference between a scamster and a hustler. 🤦🏻♂️ I am glad Indian High Commission kicked him out and not letting him in 😉
@@saurabhbhardwaj1131 , do not be vile and nasty on an issue you barely know the details! What the hell are you doing on Karl's page if you hold such stupid views about him?🤬🤬🤬
@@rabs2727 What I am doing on his "page" is that I am stating a fact on the basis of my observation coz I am his subscribers for more than 3 years when people barely knew him...so chill. He was different back then but now he is totally gone off track. By the way, try to use your real ID rather than a fake one before coming in defence for someone else 😉
Nepal has a concrete law for defamation, and in this video you have done actually that: you defamed their character intention. I hope they seek legal remedies against your vicious actions, intentionally construing hardworking sales person as scammer. I think you telling those artist as scammer is consciously or unconsciously racism from your part. You should ask yourself what makes you think they are scammer: is it because they are brown? You may deny my allegation, but think deeply. Is your rational that they are scammer funneled by your subconscious racism?
@@magingi I stand by the comment I made about racism. One’s unconsciouses bias does not disappear because one has married another race. We are shaped by cultures and values we are brought up with, and many time people do not realize the unconscious bias one inhabitants. The west is nefarious in teaching people false stereotypes about people who are not similar to them. They may connote ones niceness as “scam” as Karl does in his video. West has such a individualist culture that communal thing as showing arts as act of unkindness, thus they would be exploited.
Oh man it’s so difficult to explain this to people. All of us have been conditioned to think that western practices of business are correct. Practices outside of what occurs in the west is incorrect. Things people fail to realise is the western way of conducting business maybe correct for their country as they have proper governance and infrastructure. You honestly can’t carry that same mentality and go to a different country specially a developing one like ours. In most western countries you don’t even bargain, bargaining is a massive part of business in our country. The whole system of conducting business is different.
@@magingi bro you put into words so beautifully what I’ve been I’ve been thinking of lately. I’ve realised that in the west they are constantly “scamming” their population but because they are perceived to be governed by “policies and laws ” that we trust the system. To give you an example if you want to study in Australia as a international student you will have to pay more than double of what a domestic student will pay for the same content. Is that not a scam ? Just because they have made policies regarding international students they can charge us x3 the price ? Furthermore I complete my entire bachelors in English but when I try and get my registration I have to prove to the governing body that I can speak English ? So I end up paying 400 dollars for a test but wait for the test results come with a expiry date. As if to say that once my results expire I will magically forget to speak English so I have to spend another 400 dollars to prove that I can speak English. It’s so weird to think that we easily accept and tolerate being “scammed” by western companies and business and governments but quick to defame people from 3rd world countries.
I wouldn't account these as scams. They are hustling. Please, you making video of them (making money) out of it is no less a scam either. A famous saying in Nepal " जुन थल मा खाने, तै थल मा मुत्ने। " सले चोर।
Scam “a dishonest scheme; a fraud” Synonyms: swindle They are taking advantage of those who they deem to be out Of touch then pressuring those gullible or stressed enough do to being far from home Who mind you are also in a enclosed store into overpaying
Where is the scam? I mean have you got any problem with people who are just trying to make a living? Did they pulled you or put you at gunpoint to buy those stuff? And did you have any idea about how those painting are made? Stop defaming our country. We nepalese love you but don't take our humbleness for granted. This video really broke my heart man.
@@Tenzin819 We really don't want that. We dont want him to have bad experience in nepal. But he really need to stop calling everyone he meets a scammer man. Just like the guy who was talking about newzealand. I mean on what basis did he called him a scammer. That guy was just trying to be friendly.
Karl is biggest scammer , He is scamming the viewers , He just want to make money and go back ,, He himself trying to talk with people and calling them scammer in videos
Exactly I don't get it how is this a scam? It's a Marketing strategy for selling your products all around the world this is how people sell stuff + art is not a easy work, it requires constant efforts for hours calling it a scam is just shame to their art even though he was asking too much for the painting but he didn't even negotiate it's weird karl thinks everything is a scam.
Man this guy is just trying to ruin the country image this happens almost everywhere around the world they are just tryin to hustle for some money for the family dude need to get out of nepal asap otherwise if i see you on the street you're really going to get in trouble fr just posting negative things making the local who are actually friendly look bad on the internet
Namaste, now I don't agree with all his videos but one thing I'm very certain is when comes to Nepal, current government is full of corruptions and Thamel full of scammers and they are the ones who's tarnishing your country's reputation...and btw I came across in 2015 when the earthquake happened, while everyone was helping the victims, some Nepalis in Thamel have worked together with some groups of Chinese to cheat donation funds and that did really triggered me.
@@nicholasutopia ofc there are scammer in every country there are alot in thamel too even we locals get scammed sometimes but this guy already made like 3 4 video about scame in Nepal and dude has not been outside thamel area everyone who is traveling to Nepal knows thamel is a tourist hotspot ofc he's gettin scammed there, Nepal and kathmandu is not just thamel area its more than that may be he should get out from the shady place and explore the real beauty this country has to offer and thanks for helping us in 2015 visit again soon and stay away from such shady places
I love your videos and watch them regularly but this time I think you are being a bit harsh. Reality is most of the thanka stores have their own studio which also provides art classes for those who are enthusiastic about it. And there is no harm if they are promoting them in the street to the tourists. You may find it offensive maybe because you feel like they pursue you strongly. But language, tone and the usage of the words makes a big difference. You always have the right to decline politely.
@@fulltimehustler3979 Im a Chinese girl. He is only pointing out something he feels is taking advantage of tourists. If somebody feels someplace selling something is unfair, they can say so- this video is letting the people make their own descision. You wouldnt have made that stupid comment if he were another colour. Youre disgusting.
Yes..its a business n its found in evry country.. if karl is finding expensive then dont buy..ppl arent pointing gun at u and trying to sell.. and its not a scam..
Another great video, thank you. But don't forget, art is art and beauty is in the eye of the beholder. These are sacred paintings.... archetypes of our own inherent enlightened potential, and road maps to Buddhahood. While I agree their sales pitches go above and beyond what should be acceptable, let's not forget how many hours go into making a tangkha, especially in poor lighting conditions. Many artists in nepal have failing eyesight as a result. I'd love to see a tour of Buddhist Temples in Kathmandu.
Bhaiyaji! stop showcasing the bad stuff ( happens everywhere - u get scammed in USA too). I get the feeling you are on a mission to embarrass Nepal in public.
Karl is deleting my comment. Answer me there are many scam runs back in your Country why don't you make videos and exposed those Scam. You are doing just for your Views. Do not make those kind of videos in Nepal. We people already facing and suffering from Covid pendmic by not having Tourist. And now you are telling indirectly not to travel in Nepal.
If you want to buy their products then buy don't say scam and all . everybody wants to sell their products. Look at the size of painting and this is not book where are same everywhere.

Scam is what? Selling paintings to tourists? As long as the painting isn’t a print I mean they can name the price they want from there and it’s up to you to decide. No scam

When someone talk bad about Ur country u say their promoted by extremists but when someone talks about Muslims or Muslim countries u say that its the truth.
Tourist scam is everywhere. You just need to be careful with who u trust and the places u explore . If you're not interested just say no .Nepalis are one of the kindest people 😉 they won't bother you again .
@@bangtanami First of all it seems you did not watch the video completely or perhaps you did not understand what the video was exactly about. Secondly, price discrimination especially if unethical methods are opted to promote your goods or to make a sale or if false and misleading advertisement is used then it is considered unethical and illegal in many developed, developing and underdeveloped countries. In short trying to fool somebody by giving false information and using misleading tactics to sell something is sort of a scam . A scam does not mean you have to force somebody or beat the crap out of another person to make him/her buy your services/goods. Maybe you and your people who are into such business do not see it as a scam. However, the rest of the world does and it's a fact.
If you think that they were scammer than you are also a youtube scammer. Having a misleading title and earning dollar is your motive. Nobody forced you to buy any thing. You can neglect them. You came from a foreign land and they just want some extra buck to sustain their livelihood. Go and watch Harald Baldr and know about this country and our people. You can get good and bad people all over the world. But you focused on negative aspect of all those country you visited. Spread love and peace rather than hate to the people. ☮☮☮
So when does the ''scam'' starts really? What I see here is a sales technique. If the painting cost more than someplace else so what? They trying to make a living.
Karl servos in NZ charge me so much for whatever I buy compared to the same stuff in a grocery store. Have I been scammed? Should I take a pic of the storeperson and post it online calling him/her a scammer? Pls advise
yea sorta, but their business model relies on them manipulating you into buying their overpriced copies. im sure tons of people fall for it because it seems authentic, but ur basically getting a bootleg copy for twice the price.
It's not genuine at all. These are just copies with a few painters to make it look like they're real. Also the sales tactics are classic scammer behaviour. Selling someone pyrite and telling them it's gold is a scam, which is exactly what these people are doing with their "art".
You are a just a frustrated person. Just highlight more of negativity then positivity wherever you go. You should understand that grass is not allways green on both sides. (Unsubscribing you channel immediately)
The thing is that these guys don’t force you to buy… and they were walking here and there in the road because their shop or school is not visible until these guys shows you… you can’t called them scammers?? Scammers are those who trick you or cheat you to buy such things. Please be careful for such words… AND ONE MORE IMPORTANT THING FOR YOU IS THAT THE INDIAN GOVERNMENT ALREADY PUT YOU IN BLACK LIST… don’t make such mistake in nepal BY Saying such thing otherwise you will have 2 more countries to put you in black list… INDIA AND NEPAL HAVE A GOOD RELATIONSHIPS AND WE CALLED IT (ROTI BETI KA RELATIONSHIP)
