During my time at KUSA 9News, I served as a broadcast engineer from 2015 to 2022. Part of my responsibilities involved visiting the Lookout Mountain facility consortium with our colleague from KCNC and KMGH. My duties included starting up the large generators shown in the video, inspecting the building, and maintaining weekly readings for both KUSA and KTVD. I'm eagerly anticipating the second part! This video brings back wonderful memories.

This site was obviously well thought out before one hammer was nailed! It's a beautiful facility and I'm sure they loved showing it off. I loved the tunnel that housed the transmission lines; that was a great idea especially for security. I also loved how they can completely backup master control to insert commercials on the air from the TX site. Thanks again for sharing!

I used to live down the hill from this site. Looks like it's changed a bit since 2006 lol

Excellent. I've always had more fun behind stage than on stage. Thanks for the memories.

Wow, that's amazing! That tunnel is especially impressive. It reminds me of where the main antenna masts for Sears tower start, but a lot more spacious and organized.

Cool, many many many years ago when I was in my 20, maybe late teens I worked for Mile High Communications and we serviced some repeaters up there. Just a small transmitter building at the time for I think only one station and a smaller building where the repeaters were ..If my memory serves me right. Hope the copper thieves don't find that place.

The security is pretty tight at this facility. Tighter than I’ve seen at Mt. Wilson in Los Angeles.

Why so many big waveguides in the tunnel if all the OTA TV transmitters are combined into a common antenna?
@TheBroadcastEngineer
@TheBroadcastEngineer 9 месяцев назад
There’s a few antennas on the tower, some are backups…

@6:53 what the heck? is that an AM tower or was built for AM? crazy... :)
@TheBroadcastEngineer
@TheBroadcastEngineer 9 месяцев назад
No, built for TV. AM towers have an insulator at the base.

Love your tours. I assume this great site is not open to public tours. Is the mountain top accessible to the public? Either drive or hike up? John KC1ANI

@TheBroadcastEngineer 9 месяцев назад
No, it’s pretty heavily guarded. There’s no accidentally getting to the site. There’s hiking nearby at the Lookout Mountain park.

Why do broadcast engineering presentations always have the worst audio of any?
@TheBroadcastEngineer
@TheBroadcastEngineer Месяц назад
Not sure I understand. All the ones I’ve attended were fine. Was there something about the audio in this video you were unhappy about?

More xmitter equipment and much less generators.

One of the quieter places in the building. Very loud outside of that room.

whats the amount of combined radiation goes to the people living down hill? Those are millions of Cancer creating watts going directly to all those in the direct line of sight on that antenna farm surrounding neighborhoods! I didnt even knew it was even legal to place so much radiation in on single place?
@TheBroadcastEngineer
@TheBroadcastEngineer 7 месяцев назад
Radio frequency is non-ionizing radiation. It is not anything like ionizing radiation (like from a nuclear explosion). So, the “combined radiation” is not an issue. Further, any RF radiation is at the top of the tower where the antennas are. The inverse square law means that by the time any RF reaches the ground we’re people are is negligible. Sorry, your 5G conspiracy theories will have to go somewhere else.
