Thanks Sandy - and great question! So far as I'm aware, the treatment depends on the severity of the symptoms. So, if the gallstones are asymptomatic/relatively benign, then they may not need any intervention (beyond perhaps some dietary changes). However, if the obstruction causes severe pain/jaundice then surgery/medication is required (I believe in most cases it'll be a cholecystectomy as gallstones tend to be a recurrent issue, but medication can be used if surgery isn't a viable option). That said, please remember I'm not a clinician, so if a doctor tells you something different, I'd take their word over mine!
