Most actors who appear in popular shows sometimes appear as minor one offs first and later get called up for a role because the Producer remembers how good you were to work with. For instance, Alex Walkinshaw (Smithy) appeared as a spotty boy racer in series 16 before being introduced in 19 (I might be wrong about when he exactly appeared) as the Smithy we all know and love.
