In this video I discuss the "Binary Dog" approach to communicating clearly with dogs. Using a simple YES and NO training exercise, dogs can be taught basic commands as well as complex behaviors. Using clear communication with your dog through luring and shaping will develop solid obedience, quick sits and downs durations in obedience.

Hi Robert, i rarely ever comment on youtube, but i wanted to take the opportunity to most sincerely thank you for the content you share with us and the amazing help you provide! I just recently got a labrador retriever and have been following your videos ( not over-doing it, since he's just 3 months old ) but can already see the amazing progress he's made. You, sir, are a role model and inspiration. Best Regards, Boris

He told the dog 'no' without annoyance in his voice and as soon as the dog did the command... he was ready to reward the dog ! It's that simple and that difficult. It's difficult for people because they interject their own laughter, approval, surprise, embarassment, etc. into it. The dog needs what a dog needs and people insist on thinking of themselves rather than what to dog needs .

Another awesome video. I use a yes marker to behavior capture. I use the word Free like you use the word yes. I also use the word good a lot as well in the same manner as you use the word good. Plus all I am doing is just adding 1 more word my dog will understand. I love your use of negative markers. I also love that you do not use those annoying clickers.

Thanks so much! I have spent this weekend watching you and learned so much...there are awful trainers out there. My gsd rescue now has disc issue that I am sure is result of a trainer flipping him in a tunnel cause he turned around. He now knuckles his left rear paw. So sad.we think he is 9, he earned several titles before this issue showed up. My high drive gsd which we purchased had pano then her one year xrays showed hip and elbow displasa so started doing herding then kidney disease at 2.5 she is at less than 25%..neither dog is in pain but I will get the oil for them...now we have 12 week out gsd, replacement puppy. She doing great and your puppy training is so easy and fun. Thank you again. We went thru 5 trainers and several online and video courses. You are the best...happy new year

My 9 week old puppy quickly learned the take it, leave it and drop it commands. Very useful in having them help you clean up sticks and branches and pile them in the yard this time of year. He also carries my mail (one piece of junk mail for now). I started training him on these commands immediately to prevent him from eating sticks, leaves and rocks and received the added bonus of a work dog.

Seen a couple of your videos -- huge fan of your "implied stay" approach to sit/down/etc -- and this video peaked my interest as well...I've used a similar method with my dogs for many years now (i use corrective/rewarding sounds rather than specific words, but my goals and results are in line with your system). I'm now a subscriber -- thanks for the great content and keep up the great work! Also, is there anywhere I can find the article you speak of in the video? I'd really like to read it

hi Robert,Ive been training our mixed breed dog since he was 11 weeks old. Over the past few months hes pulling big time on the lead nearly dragging me down the drive way and street.Im trying to get him to stop turn around when I stop, to get him to stop pulling but, hes too excited and happy to get on his walk and go to the local park to run. He was originally on a harness when he was a puppy, then about 5 months ago we got him on a collar. Now hes 1 yr old and pulling and so strong. If I bring back the harness will that work along with the correct commands and rewards. Im at my wits end right now as myself and my kids don't want to walk him because he keeps pulling and dragging us with him. He is a mastiff, rotweiler, kelpi, American staffy, so hes built big and very bulky but not very tall. Hes got a very good temperament, non aggressive, friendly, and a big sookie bub scared of most things. Im slowly training him the basics to be suitable for a service dog, which hes responding to from when we got him. He sits when hes told and doesn't move until we tell him. He drops when hes told and shakes and begs when hes told. When he knows its dinner time he willsit on his own and looks up at me so say thankyou. When he knows its training time he does everything so he can get his reward. Sometimes het gets treats and some his favourite play toy. His barking is under control which was bad at some stage. Hes responded really good to certain commands and I know training properly gives the dog, more insight into behavior and habits as well as making them calm, obedient, quiet and dozile. A bitof extra information would be great right now as we need to introduce other people to him soon and he needs to get used to a harness with sash for service dog.

Yes good advice however timing is crucial and the dog will start to key in on the item or article, the dog may move fraction of a second before release command. Also the training words Yes and No are in our every day language so can be used in conversation while training the dog. Yes was the release not to take the toy, there may be disagreement on this but if the dog is released and grabs the toy then the focus was on the toy.
@TeslaNick2

"Yes" is paired with a reward, be it a toy, food or affection. What's wrong with the dog focussing on the toy ?

I just found your website and am so impressed with your training methods and results! I just got a 3-month-old English Golden Retriever who was kept full time with his siblings in an aproximately 8 x 8 roofed pen where he was allowed to potty at any time. Consequently I'm having difficulty house breaking and training him not to chew on my family and the furniture. He's very smart so I want to train him and eventually can enter him in obedience and agility contests (he climbs like a goat!). Which 3 videos do you suggest I start with?

May be random of me to think out loud while I watch this video but last week I saw an awesome field lab that was very much pregnant but this dog could launch herself like a rocket into the water to cross to the other side, sprint up a hill to locate her retrieve, and powerhouse right back. It was amazing to watch this dog. She took cues like Goofy. Yeah, she is a lab, but she was such an intense dog, like a Malinois, when she was doing her retrieves. She takes cues from anyone. Very athletic dog. She also switches off after her retrieves into a fun happy lab. It's like she's part Malinois on her retrieves and then all Lab otherwise. Just saying this because she had that drive that is such a Mal trait. All these field labs were itching to do their retrieves, but still this particular lab was really intense. Yet, as I said, she switches off too. That's a nice combination. You don't have to manage a dog that's always intense.

Great tips! Do you have any advice or a video on how to handle dogs that want to bite skin when playing tug? I just adopted a dog a few weeks ago and he loves the game, but he wants the tug toy so bad that he bites my skin. As of right now, as soon as he does that I tell him no and then we stop playing and do somethingelse. He's only 10 months old so I'm hopeful that he has plenty of time to lose this bad habit, but it's quite annoying and painful.

Hi Robert, what can I do, when my dog thinks good is the release word? Whenever I say good he Sodes why he has to wait for. I did it wrong, could you tell me how I can "repair" the command?
@gustavoflores4971
@gustavoflores4971 5 лет назад
It looks like you used "good" every time, with same timing, and he marked that word as a release command. You could do three things: 1) While avoiding to say "good" (at least for a while), use random ways to praise your dog, like saying "Nice", "well done", toys, or giving him a good pet without saying nothing, that way he would not mark that as a command. Also start marking a distinct release command. 2) Start increasing the timing of that reward (praise/food/toy), don't reward always at the same time. Then start giving him the reward only after the release command. 3) Do the training after exercising, that way you minimize dog anxiety.

I am sure you heard of all the same issues owners have with their dogs and training failures. I have taken the time to listen to the experts like you and apply it to my training and for the most part it has all worked. Now, when it comes to walking him around the block and all the sights and smells, no food, treat or toy in the world is going to get his attention. I have tried running backwards yelling "here here" he wants nothing to do with me on our walks. In the back yard or a yard over, no problem listens to the command. Trying to use this method little away from the home at a time does not seem to be helping. I get to a certain point and that dogs wants the smells and in his own littel world. I know it has to be something I am doing incorrectly, can you shed some light on it? Thank you
@TeslaNick2
@TeslaNick2 5 лет назад
Keep working on building the relationship in an environment your dog will pay attention to you. Spend more time working out what will keep him interested in you. Most importantly use a long line training lead to stop him ignoring you when you are out. Think of the long line as part of graduating to more freedom as he gets better at paying attention. Scarcity creates novelty, so your dog's favourite toy should be restricted to only when you and your dog are interacting. Only get the toy out to interact with him and put it away after. It's your toy, not his toy. Stop the play when your dog still wants more. Leaving him frustrated for more play. Don't let him check out and then put the toy away. Keep sessions short if need be. Keep working at it and be patient. It will come with time and lots of effort.

Do you use "out" for anything you want him to drop, whether on the ground or in your hand? For example, training a bird dog for hunting, out would be perfect for him to release the bird to my hand, but if I want him to drop a ball or toy on the ground, would "out" confuse him since my hand isn't by the object and his mouth? Or should I use another command, like "drop"? just came across your page. new subcriber and fan of your work.

Out is out. In use it if I want my dog to drop something and also to release the dumbbell formally. If my dog is in front of me and I put my hands down and say out he will deliver it to my hands. Similar to delivering the bird.
