The Lodger is quite brilliant. It includes some innovative cinematic techniques. The lead actor is one of the most famous stars of the time, who was a singer, composer, actor, and known for being exceptionally good-looking. The story has been remade several times, and is suspenseful but also bittersweet, tragic and ambiguous.

9:59 The actor you recognize is Peter Bull, who played the German ship's captain at the end of The African Queen.

15:09 Hitchcock always illustrated suspense with the story of two people sitting at a table unaware that a time bomb is ticking below the table. He ended it by saying, "but the bomb must not go off." One particular female critic at the premiere ripped him up and down for letting the bomb go off. He admitted later in life it had been a terrible mistake.

Enjoyed your reaction, Henry! The book (The Secret Agent) is wonderful one, which I highly recommend to you. Conrad, the author, was of petty nobility in what had been, and has become again Poland. Conrad was the name he chose for himself when he came to live in Britain. Despite Polish being his first language, he is considered one of the greatest English writers ever. He chose to write in English because he found the language more expressive than his native tongue for writing in. His life is fascinating and fun to study. Thank you for watching this one, as too few do. Now I'll need to watch it on my own as well!

Sylvia Sidney, who plays Verloc's wife, had a long career in American movie and tv. You may remember her from the film "Beetlejuice"; she's Juno, caseworker for the recently deceased.

"... can be arrested by what?" "A copper." Slang for policeman.

Americans say cops. Though that's likely much more used in the US now than copper is anymore in the UK.

Celluloid film is extremely flammable. Something flammable on a bus could make any fire worst.

"Thank you for your trouble. I'm sure you meant well." "Not at all. I like trouble." Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of William Dewhurst. Critical Success Fact: This film has a 100% rating based on 11 critic reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. Casting Notes Fact: Sylvia Sidney is most famous to modern movie audiences for her roles in Beetlejuice (1988) and Mars Attacks! (1996). Fake News Fact: The movie "Bartholomew the Strangler" is fictitious, as is, so it seems, actor Tom McGurth (who is named on the posters outside of the movie theatre). Misidentification Fact: Some erroneous modern sources identify Sara Allgood as the uncredited actress playing the bird shop customer, but she does not appear in this movie. The identity of the actress in question is presently unknown. Lost In Adaption Fact: Based on Joseph Conrad's novel The Secret Agent (1907), this sports a different title, as Sir Alfred Hitchcock's previous movie was called Secret Agent (1936), which was based on stories by W. Somerset Maugham. Mrs. Verloc's (Sylvia Sidney) first name is never revealed in this movie. However, in the novel, it is given as Winnie. The first name of Verloc (played by Oscar Homolka) was changed from Adolf to Karl to avoid any Nazi connections.

To add two things: Verloc's death this movie is pretty true to what's in the book. The "please, don't..." (and the knife is in him) might be verbatim, but I'll have to check. Though, if my memory is correct, he was lying on a couch when she did it. The other thing is that, in the book, Verloc is a pornographer, which isn't mentioned in this movie*, for obvious movie censorship code reasons. Not a maker, just a seller. Many other differences from the book, but it was, of course, not meant to be the same story anyway. * I read the book, but have only watched this movie here on youtube, as filtered through this reaction, so I don't know if Verloc's business was changed to something else, or just made to be mysterious in this movie.

Which means, in the book, Mrs. Verloc did it intentionally (unlike the movie where it looked like an accident). In the movie, Mrs. Verloc was the one who said "Ah, don't!". It wasn't Mr. Verloc. They were in the theatre / cinema business in the movie.

Hitchcock thought this film was his greatest error. Killing the kid made the audiences hate the film. He swore he would never make that mistake again.
