The Birth, Life, Death and Rebirth of Liam Gallagher’s voice [part 2]

It’s finally here. Will the next part take just as long to come out? Yes
Don’t be afraid to ask the name of any songs or where any gigs were. I read every comment and respond to most :)
If you’re wondering, Liam has Hashimoto’s disease, an auto immune condition that damages the thyroid gland and has many effects, one of which is hoarseness of the voice. He has to take medication daily, and has had to cancel many gigs due to a sore throat, which I believe to be often caused by this. But I’m not a doctor, or his Doctor so I’m only speculating at the end of the day

I would’ve given anything to see them and him in their peak. I was born 97. I got onto their music just as they split. After that I was hooked.The film supersonic was a major factor too. All I do is rewatch gigs on here and listen to their music each day. I've seen Liam and Noel live on their own, but it’s not the same. I’m gutted I never saw them together. His voice sounds amazing again, I’m thankful he’s managed to get it to a top level again. After all the shit he’s managed to come back and prove his ability. How anyone can knock him down is baffling?! They can piss off. He’s the greatest frontman ever, from the greatest band ever. Oasis means everything to me! Their music and what they stood for speaks to me on every level. It’s more than just music, it transcends it for me. They are life. I live my life through their music. Mate these videos are amazing. Liam’s such a goat, I listened to Oasis’ songs during the best and worst moments of my life. I’m from Italy and I recently went to see him perform live in Rome just before pandemic, he had a rasp voice but as weird as it may sound I prefer that. When he sang the last song his voice gave up and let the crowd do the thing but in the end of the day the gig was incredible and I remember it as the only precious moment of 2020. Great work man, really detailed ✨
@FuntClaps101
@FuntClaps101 3 года назад
It’s weird because he was obviously very aware of how damaged his voice was getting, so he changed how he sang to adapt to it, and it just put further strain on it to sing in a different yet passable way. Madness. Voice wasn’t destined for longevity it seems. Though he definitely sounds pretty damn decent recently.

Liam gallagher has hashimotos. I have hashimotos and I am literally relearning how to sing because of it. It's a lot harder to sing the things I used to. I bet he went through the same thing with his hashimotos where he had to relearn how to sing and he is back to singing good even though it probably does put a lot of strain on his voice.

Although I was a massive fan as a '90s teenager and almost-15 year old me would've given anything to go to Knebworth, I never got to see Oasis mk1 and my first gig was the Wembley show that was released as Familiar to Millions. I saw them a few times from 2000-2005, and definitely noticed Liam's voice deepening and he really did seem to struggle with the older material at times. I think it was Finsbury Park (July 2002) - I just put it down to getting older, as singers' voices do seem to become less elastic but richer for it. It was always awe-inspiring to see them, though. I was at a show in Brighton (December 2002) where he went off and Noel took over for a few songs mid-show. The write-up in the paper portrayed this as a tantrum but I'm pretty sure this 'Noel segment' became a bit of a fixture of their gigs around that time, no doubt to give Liam's pipes a bit of a rest! I watched Supersonic and As It Was (the LG doc) over Christmas, and really saw Liam in a new light. Seeing in these videos, how he gave his all despite trouble with his voice, says it all. He was always portrayed as arrogant and moody but it's clear he's always been incredibly hard-working and passionate, and didn't want to give any time and energy to media nonsense. Now he's sounding better than ever and his songwriting is on another level. Looking forward to Part 3!

In my opinion 1997 was probably Liam's best year in terms of control and diversity. He was easily able to do those calm acoustic numbers where his voice shone through like similar to 1994 but at the same time he could go for the gravel and rasp whenever he wanted all whilst being able to maintain his normal middle ground. His ability to turn the gravel and rasp on is probably seen during the 1997 Gmex show that was in the video, during D'you know what I mean and All around the world he turns the rasp on for the lines 'they dont even know your born' and 'if your lost at sea then I hope that you drown'. Honestly it's incredible and just shows the level of control he had being able to turn it off and on.

Really excellent stuff...thank you so much for this compilation! I concur with your thoughts about Hashimoto's. I too suffer from this, and I'm also a singer...and it affects my voice BIG TIME! The voice can easily get sore, raspy and tired sounding from this thyroid disease, especially when you're singing as hard and as often as Liam. One thing I know is that alcohol is very bad for this condition. I can tell you that singing is so much easier for me when I'm off booze. I can hear a little bit of this going on in Liam's voice. You can also see when he's indulging more in booze/substance abuse, his beautiful face looks more bloated/inflamed. Coincidentally this seems to be when he's struggled more with his voice. I think that's why he's singing so much better than ever these days: he's really being moderate with his alcohol/cigarette/drug intake...according to him anyway! Again, thanks so much, really beautifully put together, so interesting and so enjoyable for we Liam fans! Looking forward to part 3! Cheers!

I am watching this and thinking that Liam and many other vocalists sound best live (of course, if they are not experiencing any health related problems) when they are singing songs that have been written last. For example, in 2000 Liam's voice sounds better on songs from Standing on the Shoulder of Giants, because they were written with his then current state of voice in mind. If we take another famous vocalist, Dave Gahan from Depeche Mode - he sounds good live now when he is singing stuff from latest albums. And of course, he is no longer able to sing like 20, 30 years ago. Hence change of arrangement of classic DM songs on live shows. Same with Liam. Sure, he is no longer able to sing like when he was in his 20's. But he sounds great on his solo stuff.

one thing that i know everybody will agree with me on is how Liam hit the perfect notes 90% of the time even if the texture of his voice was fucked up. some of the worst oasis gigs from 2006-09 have liam singing with a badly worn out voice but anybody who can tell C from G will notice that he pushes his voice to all the right notes as much as he can. his breath control was pretty much fucked after don't believe the truth, but he still hit the right notes more or less with his kermit voice. he couldn't sustain most notes except baritones after DBTT though, and that's something that has bled into his solo efforts as well. he's bounced back from vocalist's hell though, and boy is it a miracle.
@vita1ogy.
@vita1ogy. 3 года назад
He hit a decent falsetto on the title track on Why Me, Why Not? I think his voice can decently hit high notes in the studio. Just not live
@mrcowlick7537
@mrcowlick7537 3 года назад
@@vita1ogy. he also gets pretty close on the live versions of why me why not. just one semitone short but that semitone deviation adds a bluesy feel to the vocal line. it's powerful though, so he can get away with it.

It's neaver been Liam's part they switched it in the studio cos Liam was too pissed n couldn't hit the high note so every performance has Noel singing the chorus plus it worked well because the fans and critics loved telling themselves it was a song written about there brotherly love for each other Wen in truth it's song Noel wrote on train for something to do and it took him half hour he wrote another in that journey but I can't remember that one

My personal preference has always been 2000 Liam (Wembley Live Album). Although he couldn't quite reach the high notes, his voice's command was MASSIVE. Thanks for this comprehensive look at his evolution. Looking forward more! PS. I'd love it if you can have the Beady Eye performance of Morning Son in Kimmel, I think. His voice was amazing there (partly due to the reverb but still a favorite of mine)

Singing for Liam became more work than a natural, effortless gift. He just had the power and could sing with ease from 94 to early 96. The undiagnosed Hashimotos he sung with for years had done damage and is why his voice became less powerful and more raspy. Lot of singers live the rockstar life and maintain their voice for the most part. It's different for all of them. For having no singing lessons, proper techniques, and coming into loving music late in his teens after the hammer to the head incident, Liam is an all time great singer and person in music history along with his brother and Oasis. Thankful that they ever existed. Really a miracle how bands like Oasis come to be. Real bottom to the top musicians and artists.

Hard to say if the fatigue from 2000 was built up for 2001, since Liam had almost 5 months off, and actually sounded pretty fresh in January. But yeah, his voice in that year, though better than the June - Aug '00 gigs, still sounded less tuneful/melodic than any gigs before that period. Something defo happened to Liam's voice during those Noel-less days.
