The true Mahdi is a peaceful person like all the prophets and all holy people , they come in a humble way , and not with a sword or army to fight . The real mahdi i will fight dajjal in a spiritual way using logic and prayers and intellect , but no weapons . These days many countries already have nuclear and sophiscated weapons , and there will be war with between gog and magog .

The well known hadith where the prophet (pbuh) said "if there remains but one day left in the world Allah will prolong that day until a man from the Family of my House will govern with justice". This hadith is connected to surah kahf (Cave) from the quran, where allah prolonged a day for 309 years for the believers of the cave, when they awoke they thought only 1 day had passed. The same event is happening to imam mehdi during his occultation. When the imam awakens from his occultation he will think 1 day has passed, but he will soon realise that allah prolonged that day for over a thousand years for him until it was the right time to awaken and help the ummah. The genuine Imam Mahdi comes when no one knows. It is the Will of Allah that when He was born no one would care for Him. He would be like a piece of thrash no one would esteem Him. It's devine benevolence that He should suffer for a long time so that no one could say " Allah, you do not know what's it like to be so poor and vulnerable, etc." There's much you do not know what Allah has designed. However, when the time comes Allah will let Him begin His mission. Prior to that, no one will know where Imam Mahdi is and who were His parents. Allah knew His Spirit is that same Spirit Holy Prophet Muhammad as written long ago. Therefore, any one says that he or she knows who is Imam Mahdi and his parents are fooling themselves. Allah isn't blind. He knows what He's doing. He planned it this way before He created this world.
David Stevens Dear brother, his parents are known narrated in Sunni and Shia books. In Yanabee al Mawwada, al Qandoozi says that the prophet named 12 princes that would come after him. The last being the Mehdi, son of al-Hassan al-Askari. By the way, this is a Sunni book and not a Shia one.

This was written as the Will of Allah. The purpose of this is to test people to find them out. Imam Mahdi has to endure many things including much pain. About His parents, do you know where they are? If you do, then that's not the genuine Imam Mahdi because it was written and spoken by the Holy Prophet Muhammad that no one would know who were His (Imam Mahdi) parents, except Allah. Fame and fortune isn't bestowed upon Imam Mahdi until Allah decided. If someone knew who were His parents and where He is everyone would want to be there. Imam Mahdi has to live in secret. There'll be enemies and mad people who would like to terminate His life. Have you seen what these crazy religious people say that Imam Mahdi is the coming anti-christ? As I've said that Allah isn't blind and foresaw what could happen to Imam Mahdi. its a very well known hadith of prophet (stw): even if one day is left for this world Allah will strecht this day so long that this man can come and rule the world with justice. so it clrearly shows that no one knows who he will be and where he will be but only Allah subhan wa tallah. and his real name will not be mahdi, Mahdi means the guided one and he will guide the humanity. in another Hadith the prophet (stw) says: his name will be like my name and his father name will like my father's name. and Allah will rectify him, make him in one night. it means he in his younger portion of life he wont be as praciticing of muslim as he should so Allah will make him in one night. he even himself wouldnt know that he is the Mahdi. so therefor, there is no point to fight who will be mahdi and which ferqa. when he comes he will bring all muslims back to the penicle of glory where we can walk with respect and honour. he wont come to separate muslims.

is this a literal story and if so when had it taken place because from my understanding in looking into islamic eschatology, Imam Al Mahdi would be born during that time and fight against the Dajjal.
This is according to the Shia teachings. They believe that the Imam is actually born but in occultation, in fact they believe hes been born for centuries but hes hidden at the moment. If I am not mistaken they believe that the 12th imam is the Mahdi, who's life dates back centuries ago. This isn't the Islamic belief per se as this is only something that Shias believe but it widely rejected by the rest as there are many political strings related to it all.

The last prophet was Muhammed (PBUH and his Family) but hé has made clear who will be the leaders after him by name. Hadith al kisa, hadith al thaqalayn, hadith al ithna asheri. What else? Quran surah al ahzab (33:33). For everyone it should be clear it's Allah (SWT) Who chooses His Messengers and their successors. You can not deny that the Prophet (PBUH and his Family) would leave his ummah without appointment of his successor. History has made clear what happend to the family of the Prophet (SAW) after his death. So lets just understand the facts. - Appointment by the Prophet (SAW) was not honoured as the first Khalif was chosen by election which became abu bakr. - abu bakr was able to appoint the second khalifa to Omar.. (hmmm why not an election the second time?) So just to be real, how is it that a person who is not chosen by Allah (SWT) can choose his successor but the Prophet of Allah (PBUH and his Family) would leave his ummah without appointing a successor. Please stop the nonsense and go back to the beginning. Shia are not enemies or what ever they just been holding tightly to the two most weightly things Quran and Ahl-ul-Bayt (A. S.). As the ahl ul bayt hold the real sunnah of the Prophet (PBUH and his Family). I have alot of respect to my Sunni brothers whether you are Shafi, Hanafi, Maliki or Hanbali. This is your foundation which you should read about. This foundation of these schools where either students or students of the students of Imam al Jaffar al Sadiq A. S. (which is our 6th Imam).
