The Birth of St.Colmcille from Donegal Folk Tales 

A story by Joe Brennan from his book Donegal Folk Tales told by tour guide Amanda. St.Colmcille was born not far from Letterkenny at Gartan. He was born into royalty and gave his life to the church. He built many monasteries and converted many to Christianity. We have many spiritual sites in Donegal and around Scotland and Northern England associated with him. His birth was prophecised. Colmcille was one of the most important figures in Irish history and he is one of the patron saints of Ireland. A lot of magic tales are associated with him. Gartan is a very special place to visit with holy well, monastery, birth place, graveyard, beautiful lakes, the Colmcille Heritage Centre, Glebe House and Gallery and Gartan Outdoor Education Centre.
