A documentary interviewing Tezz Roberts of Discharge & John Maher of Buzzcocks. The two key figures behind this now iconic punk drum beat which gave birth to a new & more intense form of punk, soon to be labelled Hardcore. Here, I wanted to find out how & where it all began playing wise for both drummers. Where they did the initial recordings & what equipment they both used at the time.
Have a watch & let me know what you think? Any questions feel free to ask in comments...

I loved using the d beat back in the late 80’s and the bands I loved that used variants of it were Seattle’s The Accused, Bad Religion, GBH, and the crusts and grindcorers who increased it further in speed and sheer noise power. The whole point was that none of us could afford over-priced double bass drum kits, so, do more with less. There were also a slew of thrash and hardcore bands employing the beat as well at various tempos (*Voivod from Canada as a quick example). It really was/is a great beat in and of its own. You can really pound that rhythm and there is no need for triggering as it is all sheer power and really up to the drummer.

Btw, there was a band from Belgium called BLAST & they recorded a 7" single in 1972 (finally got released in 1974) & one of the tracks called "Damned Flame" sounds like Discharge meets the Stooges but a full 8 years before Discharge recorded their first 7". Spike!: Thank you for taking the time and effort to ethymologize the D-beat. Its an interesting one. You guys aid it well when you said, " It might have been played in Africa back in the day, its really more about the emphasis." That really is it. One of the earliest "rock" songs I have heard it on is "I See You" by the Byrds. Where its played that way. maybe not as heavy, but the same accents more or less. Otherwise. Jazz drummers like Max Roach would use that accent pattern in solos. look at any early Max roach drum solo or the "Drums unlimited" solo on his solo record.

D-beat is primitive and violent, which is why I love and cherish it (especially its Swedish and Japanese variations) Discharge, The Varukers, Avskum, Anti Cimex, Driller Killer, Wolfbrigade, Crude SS, Disclose and Skitsystem have all been massive influences on me musically as well as the early extreme metal bands (e.g., Venom, Bathory, Possessed, Sodom, Slayer and Kreator).
@SpikeTSmith
@SpikeTSmith 3 года назад
I hear what you are saying & the rhythm itself is definitely primitive as I pointed out in the documentary. Not sure about violent though. I guess you are referring to the energy & anger that comes out in the music. It could be argued that Discharge who were very anti war in their lyrics were really trying to promote an anti violence message..

well, it was your Crass "last supper" performance that caught my attention Spike, and i have to say that you knocked it right out man ! and the reason i was searching Crass on the youtube is that it crossed my mind that Penny Rimbaud was such an innovator in punk rock, no one did what he did, with his rudimentary marching snare approach then straight down the middle of the road 4 on the floor but with a swing ! and the way he interacted with the guitar rhythm was so unique. as a young lad back in the 80's Crass really did blow my mind. bot musically and politically of course. but you Sir took it to a level of precision and velocity that was superb. a real challenge i'm sure ! this all led me to your youtube channel and voila ! here we are. so thanks again Spike. take care ! @@SpikeTSmith

As mentioned in this video, the D-beat (the original and extremely frequent old school hardcore beat) is played with evenly placed crash hits that pulse on the 4th-beats like a metronome in 4/4 Garry Maloney style. GBH used it frequently from the start too. I've seen tutorials on YT that teach the beat placing the two first crashes on 1 and 1 and a half (first two kicks) which is a pity since it breaks with the flow of the mercilessly slashing beat and makes the rhythm sound hesitant and fragmented. Good video!
@SpikeTSmith
@SpikeTSmith 2 года назад
Thanks for your comment. I’m glad you like the video. The original punk version of this rhythm was indeed played with the crash following the foot & not the metronomic version you refer to. This came a little later with GBH etc. I talk about this in my instructional how to play a D beat video which is on my channel here. @@SpikeTSmith Hey Spike. Thank you so much for your reply. As a drummer I'm really intrigued to talk about these things. I'm actually not too sure what went on with the first style in '77 Discharge, but I've studied Garry Maloney's style and he plays the evenly placed 4/4 consistently. Also, Brian Roe backs this up here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-fQwCVBQN1oM.html If you have any footage or sound showing something else, please send it right over :) I always thought that the drum intro to You Tear Me Up by Buzzcocks was rather peculiar, but in relation to your point, it seems that intro is not so original after all :)

And then Mick Harris played it even faster, His work with doom, Extreme noise terror and (obviously) Napalm Death. He even said in the book "choosing death" that he was trying to play faster than Tez "The blast beat is just the D-beat played really fast", its funny how as a beat it exists outside of just punk now the Anaal Nathrakh song "endarkenment" for instance the verse sections drum beat is based on the d-beat.
@SpikeTSmith
@SpikeTSmith Год назад
That’s not actually correct. The D beat & the blast are actually not the same rhythm although it could be argued that once played at super high speed it could be hard to tell the difference. You can’t get the D beat up to the same high tempos as the blast beat though.

@SpikeTSmith

Glad you liked the vid & thanks for checking it out. The beat itself is a “cheat” really as the hand follows the foot & is not what some might say the “technically” correct way to play it. It was more of an approach to get the job done & of course worked a treat too. Motörhead do get a name check of sorts in this as Tezz says that Philthy “Animal” Taylor was his favourite drummer but he simply wasn’t able to play like him. I also mention him in my summary at the end too. It’s worth pointing out from my point that as influential as Motörhead were to punk bands they weren’t a punk band themselves & with this documentary was I focused on the inception of the rhythm in punk hence them (and others) not being included in this.

@@blackoperations13 Just checked out the link. Very spirited playing!! Reminds me of my first band & the gigs back then too. Robin Guy is the current drummer of Sham who I’m sure Ben also knows. Cool you were both in a band together. Did you tell him about this little documentary?

Hi again...I randomly came across this gem today...Was quite surprised. It seems Mick Jacobs drumming in the band Blast from Belgium, on their 7” released 1973 and recorded in 1972 was the first to lay down a D-Beat. Check out their tracks Damned Flame & Hope... m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-SYCUIeyfEy0.html

Spike great video. I really enjoyed it. Have you heard the Mob 47 drumbeat? The early 80s Swedish band?There's a few bands doing Mob 47 worship. It's like a genre within D-beat. People call it a C-beat. It's like a sped up D-beat but different. I can't put my finger on it. Its fast as hell but differs from a straight American hardcore beat. I'm curious to hear your take on it. This band Krigshot is a great example. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qMjW1LmYoqk.html

@mirapilates

@@SpikeTSmith it's definitely different than a blast beat. The Mob 47 drummer demonstrates it but quickly ends the vid. He's always been kinda secretive about the technique.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-08hpvP7U69c.html

@@mirapilates you’re right, the drumming in that video is not a blast beat. But it doesn’t sound like the drumming in the song either??
@mirapilates
@mirapilates 3 года назад
@@SpikeTSmith It's fairly close. Mob 47 were straight Discharge clones when they began but as they started speeding up they became pretty known worldwide. They are on Pusheads "Cleanse The Bacteria" comp. As well as many other releases from the early 80s. I bring it up because me and other drum friends have listened to the beat trying to analyze it. It's almost the galloping D-beat but with a constant crash or ride. Believe me a lot of us Swedish punk fans hold these guys in high regard. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JQSblJYaj8w.html

Hardcore is Punk subgenre. Step forward in Punk evolution. Do present Hardcore Punk sounds different than in 80's? Yes, and that is good. Do sounds Hardcore Punk different from Punk Rock? Yes and that is great. With no diversity and music evolution Punk would be dead.
