The Birth of the Franciscans | Episode 3 | Saint Clare | Raffaele Ottolength | Michele Mietto
This fascinating docu-drama uses expert commentary, on-location footage, and dramatic vignettes to tell the story of St. Clare, a disciple of Saint Francis of Assisi. This story traces the origins of the Franciscan movement. St. Clare first heard the preaching of Francis when she was 18 years old. Against her family’s wishes, she became a follower of the monk. Clare later founded the Order of Poor Ladies (commonly known as the Poor Clares), a religious order for women in the Franciscan tradition. Clare was the first woman to write a monastic rule of life.

Italian, most likely, as both St. Francis and St. Claire were from Italy, where their life stories mostly took place.

Their relationship wasn't a romantic one. Clare loved Francis as a brother in Christ, as her teacher. They were kindred spirits who totally loved the poor Christ.

It is a beautiful thing for the sisters to dedicate themselves to god and the poor. I was educated in a convent school. I only wish they would not make their love for God into a romantic relationship and call them selves as brides of Christ., I am sure Jesus would think the same. Let us just think of them of followers of Jesus.

Think of marriage in a larger way. There’s no suggestion of anything romantic, or sensual, in the concept of the sisters as brides of Christ. But it is an eternal relationship of love. Do you also think of love as something always romantic? Hopefully not. It is a much larger, richer, holier, and far more grand thing. You were educated in a convent school? Then you should know that this type of language (calling them the brides of Christ, speaking of Jesus the Bridegroom, and so on) has been used by the Church for centuries. Everyone understands what is meant by it.
