Is bitcoin the blueprint for a bankless currency, or the biggest pyramid scheme ever?
When the financial world collapsed in 2008, a mysterious genius under the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto presented the architecture for the perfect, bankless currency. Bitcoins can't be forged, and can be transferred worldwide with one click of a button, without transaction costs. Up till today, nobody knows who Nakamoto is, but his invention of the first decentralized cryptocurrency became world-famous within a couple of years.
‘Bitcoin Jesus’ Roger Ver invested massively in bitcoins when they were still worth less than a dollar, and in 2013 he saw the bitcoin exchange rate reaching as much as 1000 dollars. What’s the bottom line, now that this globally disruptive currency has grown to maturity? Is bitcoin the blueprint for fair money, separated from banks or states, or will it be a new hierarchy from haves and have-nots?

Vpro is overdue for a part 2 of the bitcoin gospel. So much has changed in the crypto space. It makes this documentary look like ancient history in that world. Not to say that it wasn't fantastic, but it is outdated if you know anything about cryptocurrencies. The impact of blockchain technology is revolutionary and will change our lives.

In my opinion bitcoin is inherently anti-political. If the libertarian/austrian theory is correct, the success of bitcoin will cause the world to become a better place without the need for political action, debate or battles. If it is false, then it will either fail to achieve the goals that libertarians hoped for, or fail entirely. This will happen through individuals simply using it because it offers them better alternatives than anything that is out there. The only reason using a bitcoin today can be often be seen as a libertarian "political" action is that currently the cost in terms of effort and technical know-how is higher than the benefit you get from using it if you don't take the potential for the advancement of political ideals into account. If bitcoin is successful in future, this will become less and less of a reason to use it.

Izabella Kaminska didn't say that all money isn't political, she just said that she would rather be given a currency to use where she doesn't have to think about the politics always. The only reason the Euro or Dollar is far more political is only because they are far more widely used. However, this diversity of use also diffuses the question of politicization, giving an ambiguity that does - like it or not - make using it feel less political.

The way fiat money is created and controlled is a large part of it's political nature, The main way Bitcoin is less political is that it isn't under governmental or institutional control. Your talking about the perception of politicization Kd M and I think I understand your point. We are trained to think of government bank notes as the only money. The only thing that makes bitcoin feel political is that our current political system of money manipulation is directly threatened by it. Bitcoin forces the understanding that your currency CHOICE is a politically important decision. Likely, she longs for the old days when everyone just used Money as if it were given by the law of god and should never be questioned. It only ever felt neutral through our ignorance, however.

Firstly i have to say this documentary was really worth watching, and i might invest in one or two bitcoins. ..with that said, i believe this documentary went too easy on the bitcoin-enthusiasts. There are many more troubles for bitcoin then just the volatility and the fact that the creator owns 1/5 of the total amount of bitcoins. The biggest problem, and what really grossed me out in this movie, is the fact that bitcoin have become a sort of religious movement, where the people, just like in a evangelist church, "sees the light" and starts preaching about it, without being able to see the negative consequences with it. Just like religion or addictive drugs, people gets "blind" because they suddenly only care for one thing, whether its money, drugs or a god. And the whole perspective of the pyramide-scheme and the possibility of it one day collapsing, with some people investing their whole lives in it, is worth taking up. Roger vers title on the screen in the conference in Tokyo was "Evangelist" and thats just what he is, they never questions his own cause for preaching bitcoin, the fact that he gets wealthier for every bitcoin he gives away. The positive side with bitcoin is that it shows the goverments out there that they should be careful not to mess too muchb with the common people, as money equals power, but with bitcoin, power gets directed from the banks(and government) to the people itself. Just watched this vid. for the 2nd time after some years - still one of the best - still relevant. The small use cases, like buying coffee, are moving toward second layer solutions for efficiency (speed and cost) reasons. The big use cases remain, will stay on the main chain, and are stronger than ever. - And it remains controversial - which means the price is far from stabilized (huge upside potential remains.) The snowball is still growing. The avalanche is coming. The landscape will be changed.

I'm sure barnacules was credited, which he apparently was in the video, and probably gave permission. However RU-vid is notorious for people creating "new" content especially from TV shows, like Friends. They make a compilation and post a "Best of Friends" video that gets millions of views, when they don't even own the content. but you also need to understand supply and demand in its entirety. there is also current stock pile levels, and the multitude of localisation of 'Prices' cost of transport, futures contracts and othe derivatives that called in by the supply chain (based on price/profit) fuel/oil/gas prices, wages, rent, taxes.... looking at the cost of a coffee from one perspective of simply a commodity spot price point of view is not the correct way. you must understand the 'Economics' of both Supply, the Commodity and distribution, and the demand, market forces and how many people buy a coffee in the local area. the price of a coffee could triple based on it demand location and demand.... from $1 from a 7/11 or $8 from an organic suburban boutique cafe... and the point is the price of a coffee may not change in one localized area and triple in another...

Anyway...11 minutes in...he has a nice explanation for why bitcoin is a perfect currency. Recognizable, durable, transportable. OK. But it's also deflationary. Almost no one actually wants to use bitcoin for transactions, they want to speculate on its appreciation on a limited supply. That's exactly the wrong thing for a modern currency. A great way to kill an economy is to have everyone stop trading actual goods and services because they think the medium of exchange itself is more valuable.

I like Bitcoin cause it's eco friendly, can be worth anything at any possible time. No bank or government controls it. It's easy to use rather than cash or gold. You can only "print" so much bit coin before it can't be printed anymore. It will prevent bank robbers. It's is universal. If I gave it more thought I would say some more great facts about it

@Frederick Dorsey And 9425 USD today, 7500 USD a month ago, etc. For those who bought it at 15k or 11k because it's "never too late to step in" as Ver says, but perhaps needing to liquidate it to any other form of currency or to buy goods or services to survive, it's a financial disaster. The argument that "at some point it will always go up" is a major fallacy, as we are not meant to take money to the grave, but it is meant as a means to use it. Just like not knowing when the value goes up, we do not know when we need to make use of it, so it's a double speculation. Not for the millionaires like Ver of course who don't care about that, since they have enough wealth for generations to come by having seized an opportunity at the right time. But 99.999999% of people HAVE TO care about liquidity and cannot gamble with their lives, for lack of massive savings. You can call it volatility, speculation, whatever. It is like gambling, while you are led to believe that its ideology will inherently save it from being abused. It will not. Aside from the original concept of a "free" currency, people need to understand that bitcoin may be a new type of currency, but currency it is. Which is prone to be abused and manipulated, as it is just a means to an end. When in the wrong hands, it will be used in a way that everything is used in today's world: by those at power to gain even more power.
