Strom’s parents maintained a plantation type farm. They employed blacks to work on the farm. One black lady was a housekeeper and lived with her teenage daughter in separate quarters on the farm. During one of Strom Thurmans college breaks he managed to get the 16 year old black girl pregnant. Strom was about 19 years old. A daughter was born and she was known as Essie Mae Washington. When Strom was a Senator he privately supported her financially. She became a school teacher and actually retired. Strom never publicly acknowledged his daughter although she did see him from time to time. After Stroms death this fact became known. Stroms white family including his son who was Attorney General of South Carolina acknowledged her as DNA test proved old Strom was Essie’s Daddy.

Instead of going out with a bang, she decided to mix it up and go out after a bang.

Anything involving Strom is going to be weird...he was a strange person. 😒

Crazy to think how a mule kick started a deadly chain reaction. But you could argue that it was actually J. Wallace Logue's greed (asking Timmerman $40.00 instead of the original $20.00) that lead to a deadly escalation which resulted in the deaths of all those people.

Safety note while exploring old houses: I heard of someone who stepped on a nail near an old house, and he died from the infection. Careful.

No...moral of the story is "Don't let your ass get you killed "🐄🐂

As we can see , law enforcement hasn't changed in all these decades . Guilty until proven innocent .

All that over a calf? Honestly he asked for $20 he received said $20 but then later asked for more? Well being one who watched a lot of the people’s court over the years Once he accepted the $20 in the first place any more further claims were null and void. That’s nuts

This is not what normally happens "when tempers flare." This is what happens when the human heart is filled with the love of money (the root of evil) and the desire for revenge. Sins which results in murder.

Moral of the story..."KEEP.YOUR MOUTH SHUT"

It wasn't caused by the donkey but by vindictive people. I feel sorry for the donkey and the calf.

It would be awesome to restore that old General store and make it a monument of some kind if someone had the time and funds. After all 2 people lost their lives in there at the counter. The building still looks in pretty good shape.

I was born and raised in SC in a small town of Ware Shoals. Heard this story yrs ago

I know the Adams family. A former slave family that was as owned by the Thurmans. They live in the area till this day, we talked about this story when I stayed with them for a week in the winter of 2000. They thought it was scandalous that Strom had sex with her in the way to her execution. Said, one of the guards who was from that area, raved about it when he came home for that next Christmas. Strom admitted it, early on, bragged about it even in certain company and later then denied. Wouldn't we all have sex with a girl, on her dying day? Especially if she looked the way she did in the time she did. She was a real doll in those days.

I've got a book on this "The Guns Of Meeting Street". It says nothing about a farm hand being killed on the Timmerman farm. I think the author's name is Dorn.

There is a book about this chapter of history called THE GUNS OF MEETING STREET if anyone is interested. I have been to the area and seen the store and Logue house .I agree, this would make a great movie.

What trips me out is how my mama, grandma, great grandma and that older generation says that modern folks don't have morals, lack decency and a good upbringing, they had it. Then I hear stories like this and the Ruby McCollum story out of Live Oak, FL and I say they were just as wild and scandalous, lol I remember when Strum died in either 02 or 03, good gracious that man was something else, and not in a good way😳

Had only learned of this sad incident during my 2nd Johnstown trip last month, as a historical plaque is located, literally, by the entrance to the Inclined Plane (while the hiking trail leading to the mine's entrance is located right across the Stonycreek River)

8 people dead and 1 other gets 17 years in prison.....9 lives effected over $20

Yeah, Hollywood has been out of ideas for 34 years and since then, the American movie watching public has been indoctrinated to watch movies with continuous car chases and explosions, not caring one little bit about plot.
