In week 7 of the 1987 season, viewers watching the CBS affiliate in Utah, KSL-TV, expected to see the critical NFC West game between the New Orleans Saints and the San Francisco 49ers, especially after the viewers were treated to a pregame show from The NFL Today. However, what followed was a bizarre broadcasting choice involving the movie The Inn of the Sixth Happiness, leaving many fans frustrated, and leading the program director at the station to issue an ultimatum against The NFL Today and CBS in New York. This is the story behind the controversy involving CBS and the entire state of Utah

Wow--Don't remember this one--That's an unreal story. Always love seeing the old NFL Today CBS studio along with the crew. ....and I can absolutely understand the level of frustration from the fans on that date, for sure. Great story-telling.

Couple of corrections. Even back then, only a very small percentage were "devout" enough to watch no TV on Sunday! ;) The real religion in Utah is the Deer Hunt season. Trust me on that! :)

JG9 can’t get to every last detail in these videos, so I don’t want to come across as stepping on his toes. But some of the comments I’m seeing makes me want to explain this further, albeit with some speculation. NBC had doubleheader rights that week. In SLC the decisions both NBC and CBS had to make were based around getting the Broncos-Vikings game on. As JG9 pointed out they were scheduled to play that Sunday at 11 until they got moved to Monday Night due to Minnesota hosting Game 7 of the World Series that day. I’m guessing KSL advertised that they would be showing the Cardinals-Giants game at 2 that day. But when the Broncos game got moved I’m sure fans in SLC were hoping to see the 49ers-Saints game. From a records perspective no game that week was better than that. When the fans saw The NFL Today at 10:30 they had to have some hope that they would be seeing the 49ers-Saints game, and that CBS and KSL made a last minute decision to show that game. When they saw The Inn of the Sixth Happiness they had every reason to be displeased.

Fun fact: Colts games were at 2pm because of the local churches. The churches had to compete with fans going to the game and it caused problems around that time, especially going home. They also felt rushed with their service and many went to the game rather than church.

The Inn of the Sixth Happiness is a pretty good film, and was initially released in December 1958. Thus, almost 29 years between the release of the filnm and this game. For comparison, it's now 2022, so going back 29 years would make it...1993. Damn, I'm getting old.

“The Inn of the Sixth Happiness” was shown as part of the “SFM Holiday Network” movie package back in the 1980’s. And just to let you know, the “SFM Holiday Network” had the “Monday Night Football” theme played in the background which was a perfect connection.

In a non sports note about KSL, it's my understanding that for the first couple of years after becoming an NBC affiliate, the station wouldn't carry "Saturday Night Live". Instead, an independent station in Salt Lake carried "SNL". I believe KSL now does run "SNL".

Okay, I am too young to remember this happening, but coming from Utah and from a family who loves to watch football - we would have been PISSED. And KSL doesn’t just cover Salt Lake City, it’s pretty much the entire state, plus some areas in eastern Nevada, southern Idaho, and parts of Wyoming. So that’s a lot of people you’re ticking off. And, yeah, we might not have the tradition of football like some places back east or in the south, but we love our football. Particularly the 49ers. In fact, whenever the NFL tries to lump us in with the Broncos fanbase, I just want to say “No, that’s not right.” My family, for one, is more partial to the Raiders from that division. But the 49ers are extremely popular here and have been since even before the Steve Young era, so of course people would have wanted to see that game. Yeah… CBS screwed the pooch on this one. No wonder the phone lines were lit up.
@giantsr1eva

@Chrissy Did the station run a scroll saying that they had a late game instead of an early game? Were the people shown a guide that informed them that there would be a late game? Wait they were shown a guide. They were told that it would be a late game. CBS did nothing wrong here.

Here in New York City, WCBS-TV (channel 2) didn’t screwed up the football game, but at 12:30PM, “NFL Today” was on, and at 1PM, the main game, not “The Inn of Sixth Happiness”, it can be on another TV station like WWOR-TV (channel 9), WPIX-TV (channel 11) where they used to showed movie marathons, or WNYW-TV (channel 5) where there were no sports on TV, a movie might go there. And also, “The Inn Of Sixth Happiness” was part of the “SFM Holiday Network” movie package. I do remember the “SFM Holiday Network” since I was a kid, because the of the theme from “Monday Night Football” was played.

That was the Saints' "Woulda Shoulda Coulda" Game. After the 2-point loss, Saints 2nd-year coach Jim Mora had his famous after-game rant that inspired the team for the rest of the season. At least until they were crushed by the Vikings in the Saints first post-season game.

0:30 Another stellar Jimmy The Greek pick. He predicts here that the Giants will beat the Cards in St. Louis 27-17. If this was from the 1987 season, the Cards won the game 27-24. If it was week 7, the Giants won in NJ 30-7. And when I lived in Arizona I used to love getting up on a Sunday morning, grabbing a cup of coffee, and watching the pre game show on ESPN at 9am with the games starting at 10am. And I dunno, I think looking at a rather beautiful Ingrid Bergman might be a good trade off.

I noticed little snippets featuring Jim Brown and Dick Butkus in the background clips, so both must have been pretty good, or at least didn't suck as sportscasters on the NFL today shows back in the '80s. I can only speculate as to why they didn't do it longer since I myself was busy doing other things than watching pro football in those days. If Brown and Butkus weren't good & and successful, Jaguar Gator9 would have already done a program about it.

The SLC DMA, which covers all of Utah and then some via tons of repeaters, is also bigger than Jacksonville, which has since gotten an NFL club. Thank goodness for KSL 5's program director standing up for his viewers. I don't know what CBS was thinking in the week leading up to that Niners/Saints showdown. Given that the SLC DMA had grown enough to be one of the biggest in the West, that ultimatum was one that CBS couldn't take lightly.
