Back in the fourteenth century, Mansa Musa was the ruler of a West African Empire and was said to be worth more than double that: around 400 billion dollars by today’s money, accounting for inflation.
Such wealth is often hard to imagine, so for context, this figure is the same as the national gross domestic product of Norway. Musa was so wealthy that his lavish gifting crashed a regional gold market for a decade, and quite literally put him and his empire on the map.
Much of Musa’s early life are lost to history, but what we do know is that he was born around 1280 AD in or around the Mali Empire, and ascended the throne around 1312. Lets find out more about how his bizarre life as history's richest man!

The academic consensus is that there were many factors that led the Portuguese explorators south, including a search for Prester John and ethiopia, the markets of the Indian ocean and the wish to open a second war front against the ottomans. I highly doubt the gold in a possible land was much more important than the known market in Índia, let alone the only as your comment implies
@DirkGil
@DirkGil 2 года назад
@@thelaziestguyuveverknown First off, a clarification: most important, definitely not only motivation for sailing around West Africa. I can't pretend to be better sourced than an accomplished writer like Howard French. The Western academic consensus is indeed such, but there is well documented bias in how histories are written. Howard French researched often-hidden parts of (pre-)modern history that illuminate the role of African entities (states, empires, etc.). It shows how it is not about gold in a possible land, rather a very certain land (as much of the gold in Europe came from West Africa through North African traders). And how even West Africa was often referred to as "India", it being a fairly vague term for a land far away. Anyways, he goes to explain how court documents from Portugal indicate much more interest in West African gold than Indian spice markets, Prester John & Ethiopia or even the first trip around Cape Good Hope by Bartolomeu Dias. I'd be interested to read up on the Western and other academic communities reactions to his book to dig in deeper, though.

For example when God will be angry on judgment day, then it is not an anger that me and you feel it is something beyond of our comprehension. Allah SEES and HEARS everything, but that doesnt mean with literall eyes and ears (Astaghfirullah). No human being can ever comprehend the beauty and majesty of God. @@pablo_fre5hcobar - You clearly don't understand so I will try again. No one denies African contributions to the world, fact. I differentiate Egypt from sub Sahran Africa because although the two are connected geographically in as much as they are both a part of the same continent or land mass they are also separated by the barrier of the desserts of North Africa and they are also separated culturally. Egypt is still a part of Africa geographically but it is different from the rest of Africa. Egypt was a part of Meditaranian culture and the culture of the fertile cresent, the cradle of humanity. Those cultures were totally different from sub Saharan cultures. Most of the contributions to the world came from Egypt and the fertile cresent which was populated by the Indo/Europeans, most of the contributions that came from sub Saharan Africa came because outside invaders and conquerers and settlers such as the Arab Muslims and the Europeans created those contributions or taught the black Africans how to do the same. Without outside influences most of Africa would still be living in the stone age or early iron age as some of them still are to this day.

Mansa Musa lived in the 13th-14th century. The Europeans did not encounter or even meet Mansa Musa. The Portuguese had a treaty with Mali, like a 100 years after the death of Mansa Musa after they were defeated on The Gambia river by Malian soldiers. It was the Songhai that took over Mali, and even then it was the Moroccans who conquered them not the Europeans.

modern woke history need no factual evidence to rewrite history so if you want africans to of "found" america before the vikings or ancient polynesians both with REAL evidence, physical evidence for vikings, DNA evidence for polynesian mixing with the other hapla group from asia, so you are in the clear. 1619 project even got a pulitzer award. so yeah, muslims say they discovered american first, evidently columbus wrote he seen an stone structure in the shape of a minoret so that all it takes for millions of muslims to believe, african supremacist use the same logic. as a Christian i don't understand why someone tries so hard to identify and glorigy the most superficial part of their physical body, skin pigmentation, and for many their self esteem is tied to a collective view surrounding how much or little pigmentation they have. seems elitist to me. why now amplify being a Child of God and inderitor of all the promises in the Bible. we have a Glorious and Loving Lord who loved all ethnicities and died for them all equally. seeing skin tone in place of our spiritual kinship is the source of much conflict. don't let the atheists and communists of BLM tear you away from your true family in Christ.
