There's a reason why people say that the breed's ancestor is from Mexico, not that the breed is from Mexico. The Chihuahua is so separated from its ancestor genetics-wise. Chihuahuas used to be able to take down rats and now they are the size of a rat. Being so tiny makes them angry bc they cant defend themselves. Even when they bite, it doesn't bleed bc they are that tiny.

ok we don't consider it an insult....not all of this is true. The way they said it is messed up. Mutts are mixed from purebreds. ..so how can they be any healthier? seriously its just trying to make purebreds look bad its really not like that.Mixed breeds have genetic disorders aswell because each time they breed in the streets or their owners breed them because they want to make designer breeds its worst than breeding a purebred dog because those dogs are so mixed that you dont know with who they mated and what breeds are mixed in making tons of health problems. At least we can determine what problems the purebred dogs will jave and it can be bred out...but with mixes there really isnt much of a way out. In yhe purebred dogs there are different types in the breed some are bred to the looks they use to have and others to the evolved looks which are really not to be considered looks for show its looks for the breed supposedly . Mixed breeds arent bad I just want to state out a really important point that nobody is mentioning because they are too busy criticizing the purebred dogs. Find a good responsible breeder and you'll gind that none of thise mentioned things are going on....choose the wrong breeder and you'll start one of the world's hardest battles to get over with
@zemorph42
@zemorph42 9 лет назад
+Paz Hernandez I call bs. It's simple; small gene pool = less genetic diversity = more health problems and more frequent and severe genetic disorders. All "purebred" breeds have chronic health issues due to inbreeding, often linked to the traits for which they were bred and thus impossible to breed out. Mutts are always more robust and healthier than their purebred ancestors because mixing separate bloodlines together always results in more genetic diversity and lower chances of genetic disorders, unless both parent lines are so riddled with severe genetic defects that they're on the verge of extinction, anyway. Learn population genetics.

the new line "pure breeds" are more health than other "pure breed" lines as they have rejuvenated genetics but it takes a little while for them to be recognized. yes, mutts are the way to go if you want a good dog that is going to last. if you want the pride and prestige of having one of the prime specimens of the hyper inbreed lines, get a "pure breed". simple as that. it goes for all animal breed lines.
@machdude3366
@machdude3366 8 лет назад
This is literally like saying "our dogs are now less franken because we played around with their genetics a little more." Down the line, it still doesn't change the fact that they are inbred. Any pride and prestige from having a purebred dog is entirely superficial due to the fact that these animals are only given prestige by people like you. The argument for "all animal breed" lines is pretty damn far out there when most animals that have been humanly inbred these days are not meant to be pets. They were meant to be beasts of burden or food. At least their purpose is based on something that we have a function for. Purebred dogs for the sake of purebred status is truly animal abuse in its purest form because you have no good reason to do it. At all.
@seanrea550
@seanrea550 8 лет назад
a dog does not care about genetics as much. cross breeding lines may not make dogs less "frankenstines" but it does strengthen their genetics. just allowing a cross breeding one time can reset a genetic counter as to how inbreed the offspring are. the more you do this the stronger the line is as you diversify the genetic material in the off spring.

Yay Mutts!!! I keep telling people that they are the best. I think there is some sort of stigma because people associate mutts with being shelter dogs and shelter dogs often have anxiety or trust issues because of abuse or abandonment. And yes, a lot of shelter dogs do take time and effort, but isn't that what having a pet is all about? My dog Annie, she's no purebred and she is definitely neurotic and a little screwed up, but earning her trust and love has been rewarding. She's not some pretty little accessory, she is a person with her own thoughts, fears, and personality. Mutts are the best because they are often unexpected, you can't look up on a chart and see how they are "supposed to act" with their specially designed temperaments, you actually have to get to know the individual dog.

DANIEL your right there. I know of a pug whose owner has to shove a catheter down its throat, by passing the fucked up airways in its head, in order that it can go to sleep. British Bulldogs are in a far worse state than pugs. I looked after 2 B Bulldogs once for someone and I noticed that when it tried to sleep it would lie down with its legs folded up under it. This would stop its breathing and it would have to wake up. I had to shove a cushion under its chest just so that it could get some sleep. All brachycephalic dogs are in bad trouble.

Most of this is true. But he forgot to mention there are good breeders out there. Very rare thou... Sadly. I know a breeder who puts the dogs health first! She gets them teated for everything and makes sure their NOT related. She doesn't make much money because money isn't a priority. It's the dogs health. When people are interested in her pups she makes you sign forms to spay/neuter the dog when it's an adult and asks a million questions. She won't give you the dog unless she knows it's going to a forever home. After her female gives her 2-3 litter with long gaps in between; she spays them because she doesn't like breeding them anymore after that. She's been doing this for 30+ years and only has great reviews. Her dogs live very long lives too of 15+ years. It's just sad there aren't many good breeders, and a lot of puppy mills

they aren't that rare. there are nowhere near as many purebred dogs in shelters as mutts. Alot of breeders take their dogs back if they can not be re homed. Not that there anything wrong with mutts, but no one talks about those stats. I go to shelters and see purebreds often but the mutts from irresponsible breeders who dont give a shit are rampant., its pretty obvious even if people are breeding for aesthetics they do seem to look after their dogs way more than mutt breeders as a whole.

Good breeders are still inbreeding animals, no matter how many waivers they have customers sign and no matter how carefully they choose the mating pairs, which are still closely related by virtue of being the same breed. With the number of strays that exist, it's far and beyond more ethical to not breed at all.

@fallenleaf.931
@fallenleaf.931 6 лет назад
Meow it is not a good video as it only talks about dogs looks and not their psychological traits, which is what truly matters. People originally started breeding not because they wanted cute dogs, but because they wanted dogs who could retrieve/hunt/pull/guard/herd better and more easily. Sadly today dogs are more often than not treated like objects or accessories to show off down the street. They are not given a chance to work, to behave as they should (see Labrador Retrievers: they are meant to be retrievers, but today people buy them just because they're cute and happy. And then they wonder why they are so destructive: they're frustrated!). So because people no longer care about a dog's temperament and purpose, but only about their looks, it's easy to end up criticising breeders, calling them criminals and preach about how adopting is better (when mostly people adopt so they can get a dog for free, without anybody interviewing them to see if they are the right owners for that dog type, as responsible breeders do).

Anna Skupin In many countries it actually is. The German Tierschutzgesetz bans breeding of animals if such breeding would imply unnecessary pain or suffering ("Qualzucht" - "cruel breed"), even though over here they are quite lame in actually enforcing that. Austria specifically mentions troublesome airways (among others) as a criterion to determien a breed a "Qualzucht" and apparently they are actually getting stuff done.

This is why cats usually live so long, we dont breed them like this, and the ones we do (like siamese) have medical issues and are proven to live shorter lives. If we keep doing this to dogs, theyll barely live long at all. Horrible! No wonder pets die so quickly, weve done it.

Both had to undergo a ton of medical things to get them to normal and my oldest cat is allergic to a ton of things. Can’t even use regular cats sand. Have to use this tofu stuff, as after experimenting that seems to cause problems. But cat breeds are a thing. I see these ugly flat faced cats. As much as I love how a Bengal cat looks, I know it’s wrong. Actually the whole pet business is wrong, and sad. Although we adopted stray animals left for dead, still part of the problem, but people into special breeds are worse.

I love how he glosses over the fact that dozens of purebred dogs were once made with a purpose. Humans didn't do the shit for fun all the time. Poodles and Border Collies are two of the most intelligent dog breeds because they were bred to be smart. These breeds have history over hundreds of years. Then take a more recent dog breed like the German Shepard. Sure it's lineage is barely 100 years old but it has done so much for police work and protection that it should not matter that they are a young breed. This goes for Dobermans and Rhodesian Ridgebacks as well. Just because a dog is adorable and purebred does not mean that any mutt could do what it was designed to do as well.

***** Yes, he did, but he's also leaving out the fact that just about EVERY breed was created for a purpose. Rottweilers were originally cart pulling dogs, GSDs were bred to protect flocks of sheep and goats. Westies were bred to kill moles and rats, Doxens were bred to go after badgers in their holes... Pretty much every breed had a purpose at one point or another and were very healthy dogs. It's the shitty breeding that's happened over the past 100 years that's killed our breeds in terms of health, not the fact that they're purebreds.

i half agree that mutts may seem healthier and generally that can be true,not because its a mix breed though,it is because of what 2 dogs the puppies came from. good pure breds should have a health guarantee,which the breeder can back up with proof of the dogs ancestors health.but i agree that breeding dogs just for looks at the cost of their health is wrong. but if you want to see what pure breds where ment to be look up "Belgian malanois" and also "presa canario" they are pure bred working dogs that arent generally found in puppy mills :) p.s.i have 2 pound mutts :)
@SarahPiperNZ
@SarahPiperNZ 10 лет назад
Hybrid vigour doesn't apply when mixing within a species, and because the range of mutts is so broad, no one focuses on the health issues. Of all the dogs I've met with hip dysplasia and luxating patellas (all things health testing can identify so dogs which are prone to these conditions won't be bred, by good breeders anyway), only one was a purebred. The rest of them (and I worked in a boarding kennels, so it was at least 20-25 dogs I met over those years) were your "healthy" "hybrids". And, just because, I had a lovely purebred for over 14 years. Never had any health issues in his life and was happy and healthy up until the week his renal system started to fail. Not genetic, not something that could have been prevented, and not something his breeder had ever seen in any of her dogs before, just bad luck that meant we had to say goodbye to him. From his litter, I know three of the others who are still continuing to do well. But god forbid a purebred be healthy right? It's called responsible breeding, and it works damn well.

No, what I meant by that is that you have so many different breeds of dogs, such as Border Collies, valued for their intelligence and herding ability. Actually your point about the inbreeding isn't entirely correct. When a purebreed is considered a "pedigree", the breeders have made sure that the dog's genetic ancestry is as pure and consistent as possible while having as little amount of inbreeding as possible. This is actually a pretty serious issue among breeders of working dogs, I'm pretty sure. They come with a certificate if they're pedigree. For example, the German Shepherd, used by police forces all over the world, is bred specifically for their fitness and intelligence (but more so looks if they're bred to be a show dog). If a GS was even slightly genetically inaccurate compared to other GS's, this could show up in it's level of fitness and intelligence. If it was inbred, this can show up in it's health. The police can't use a dumb, unfit and unhealthy dog, so they won't take anything that isn't meeting an incredibly high standard. Moral of the story: get German Shepherds. They're awesome. They're also pretty cheap, at like $700 or so for a pedigree working-class puppy (in Australia), which are the ones you want to get. The show dogs are pretty much useless if you want intelligence (I think, don't quote me on that).
@brittandthatsall
@brittandthatsall 10 лет назад
Actually German Shepherds have plenty of defects, and don't live very long without problems, especially hip dysplasia. The dogs purchased by military & LEO are selected and trained (at great cost) whilst you don't see the undesirable dogs represented. These dogs are far from perfect & exhibit aberrant behaviour, in some cases they must be euthanized. www.upei.ca/~cidd/intro.htm Inbreeding is important to "fix" characteristics in a population which is why it's done. After 4 generations of free (cross) breeding dogs revert to their standard morphotype resembling wolves. @RedRoseAkabara84
@RedRoseAkabara84 8 лет назад
+PlayingGoji We've essentially spent centuries breeding dogs to mentally remain puppies their entire lives. Dogs truly never "mature". They retain their puppy-like thinking, behavior, and reactions through their entire lifespans. This is why dogs are unlikely to ever challenge a human for dominance. Puppies are naturally submissive to the adults in their lives. Litters of puppies will often have loose hierarchies amongst themselves, but they are all submissive to adult dogs. Dogs view humans as the 'adults'. They may push their limits to see what they're able to get away with, but almost never will a dog treat a human the same way they would another dog that they consider lower in the food chain. They may decide they don't have to listen to what a human tells them, or not have to obey them, but this is not the same thing as considering themselves higher ranking, and expecting submission from you. This is not the case with wolves. Wolves go through their puppy stage, and then they mature mentally as well as physically. Wolves become adults, and gain an adult view on the world. It takes considerable skill, knowledge, time, and experience to raise a wolf to behave anything at all like a dog, and even then they can never truly be trusted with strange humans and especially strange animals. People have had much better luck encouraging the wolves to be wolves, and instead working themselves in around the wolf's lifestyle rather than trying to fit a wolf to a human (or dog) lifestyle. Wolves have been raised with dogs and cats in the household that they were as sweet and gentle as could be with, and then they still turn around and rip any trespassing animal to pieces. 'Pet' wolves are extremely dangerous to have around children, or anyone who is not capable of handling themselves comfortably, confidently, and cooly around the animal at all times. Wolves are very much not like dogs. They may have similar body language and features, but that's about where the similarities end. If you raise and treat a wolf exactly the same as you'd raise and treat a domestic dog, someone is going to get hurt, period. Be it you, the wolf, your child, a stranger, etc. Someone is not coming out of that situation on top.

The European GSD is bred for the back to slope down into the hindquarters and yeah, it fucks them up. The American standard is to have a straight topline down into sturdy legs coming straight down to support the full weight of the dog. I hope someday to see the European standard abolished, because it is definitely negligent to the dogs.

it says a lot when brachycephalic breeds are extremely relaxed when they're intubated with an oxygen tube during surgery unlike other dogs because *it's the first time they're actually able to breathe without effort*. and the black tint of their lips and gums isn't pigment: it's from lack of oxygen, and vets even report that their lips actually turn a healthy pink when they're fitted with a tube during surgery. the very fact they can't even reproduce without aid is probably nature's way of saying "FUCKING STOP THIS YOU DUMBASSES"

There’s a lot of misinformation in this video. I understand what he’s trying to say, but he seems to ignore the fact that “pure bred” doesn’t mean adhering to specific genes, but rather specific standards that can be expressed phenotypically
@aravind787

He probably doesn't know about COI (coefficient of inbreeding) and ALC(Ancestor loss coefficient) any professional breeder understands some basics of genealogy. He thinks breeds are like some elite class of dogs. Breeds were developed with a sets specific traits, behaviours and temperaments in mind. Breeds make it easier to expect predictable set of characteristics which are good for the dogs in general. Imagine breeding to random mutts, it's impossible to predict how good they might be in working environments or their temperament around children. It would become almost impossible to put such dogs into homes and to work with confidence as the outcome is never predictable. He also doesn't understand that when many of working line breeds were developed, they were bred with other breeds to bring back certain traits.

Isn't it the same thing with humans? I mean, there really is very few humans (or even none) that has the blood of one race in them. And yes race is also a concept we made up. But we humans have been traveling around the world for hundreds of years. Even when Hilter tried to make a pure aryan race, his so called pure bloods had genetic ties to their non-Aryans. And not to forget the obvious part, the genetic problems of incest...

Had to look this number up: There are at least 17 people per dog in the world. And because humans move so frequently from place to place around the world, more so than other animals, we've got pretty good genetic diversity as a whole. During cell replication we also have many factors that regulate what's being synthesized. Twins may even have genetic differences due to mutations that occur naturally in DNA replication. And even if a mother and father are siblings, it doesn't guarantee the offspring will have a genetic disorder, it's just much likelier because the gene-pool is smaller to receive from. In summary, as long as your family doesn't stay in one place and marry people nearby or in the family, you're fine. You're still going to be homo sapiens sapiens for a million years. In response to being biased about the purebred dogs, if you purchase a pure-bred, you're only supporting their existence. That sale will encourage more pure-breds. Change starts with one person.
@urbanengine1

"Isn't it the same thing with humans?" Sort of but not really, Human 'races' are a lot more generalized than dog breeds. If tried to make them roughly equivalent you would have to say that the Irish are a different race than the English who are a different race to the Germans etc. There is far more genetic diversity in the Human DNA pool than in the canine one. Humans from northern Europe have completely different Haploid groups than Humans from the Mediterranean, and Humans from southern Africa have completely different ones than those from central or northern Africa.

I've never had a problem with a dog that I've adopted as a stray or as a rescue! In fact, the only time I ever had a problem with a dog was when my father purchased a Staffordshire Terrier puppy from a breeder, and gave him to my sister as a gift. By the time he was a year old, he bit the tip of my nose off and killed one of my cats. The nose I was pretty forgiving of; I was being stupid and he bit me, but the fact that he killed my cat, who had been around him pretty much since the day he was born, was my last straw. We took him to the shelter the next day, and I don't know what became of him. Watching this video pretty much confirms what I was speculating about dogs after that day.

I love this video and I stand behind what it's saying but, chihuahuas are actually one of the healthiest breeds because they have been around 100 AD (and their predecessors the techichi have been around since at least 300 BC). Because they were a naturally developed breed and not created by European weirdos they are very healthy and have the longest lifespan of any dog breed (they can live up to 20 years). So yes they are tiny, but they're actually quite healthy and natural, as long as you don't inbreed them.

laura doyle That's spaniels and there is some debate on whether it's true. Chihuahuas are hardy, intelligent dogs but almost every one I've met has been an untrained mess. They were bred for independence and rat killing, so they really need the same level of socialization and training as any high prey drive dog such as a malinois. When they don't get it they turn neurotic.

Janet Brock Vet assistant here and I disagree with you. Chihuahuas have troublesome joints and also they are mental wrecks. The latter one is for two reasons: Firstly, they appear not to understand that they are small. They behave as if they were mighty like a German shepherd even though they are not. The second reason obviously are the owners. Chihuahuas are cute, if they destroy stuff or act agressively, that's cute and owners do not train their dogs. That is why they quite often are agressive and devious rats.

Exactly as it's not just supporting the unfortunate traits/suffering bred into a dog but that meanwhile, healthy dogs are being euthanized due to dog overpopulation whilst people buy. So anyone who supports breeders by buying a dog, are killing a dog that needs a home. Plus breeders "select" dogs,which means also discarding/drowning dogs. Additionally, ordinary people end up footing the bill for these breeders and anyone who buys from them and doesn't want the dog anymore later on, as so many rescues are just individuals just trying to help these poor homeless, unwanted or unhealthy animals (once a trend wanes, many people give up the dogs they bought or when they realize the bills involved or that they don't want an adult dog).

Ava Solem genetically it doesn't matter what species you are, if you inbreed enough it creates defects. That's why marriages between siblings are illegal. Incest creates deformed children. Actually it's because unlike dogs, most of us decided later on that breeding with siblings and later cousins was a bad idea and that breeding with people of there own race was considered "pure" enough and part of a cultural identity. It never really occurred to anyone before the 50s that to outbreed people of different races would result in healthier, stronger, smarter and even taller children with the potential (potential I said, you still have to work hard for your body to live up to it's potential) to reach the peak of human perfection unless of course some mad scientist somewhere is working on cybernetics or gene splicing. It's funny, "mixed bloods" or half-breeds back than were thought to be abominations. Today, a lot of people now think "mixed bloods" are more beautiful than "pure bloods" because of people like Keanu Reeves or Johnny Depp.
@Logan-qi4nx
@Logan-qi4nx 8 лет назад
TheNorth15 this is exactly the sort of comment I wanted to see. Because people like to make a big deal out of the physical features of native Germans or Swedes while there are plenty of good examples of specimen with mixed race. While in the distant future that might lead to a more uniform race that's much preferable to better joints and more complex gene mixtures

They breed German shepherds with short hind legs and long front legs which means that their hips dislocate a lot which causes them excruciating pain. Kennels Clubs aren't bad. It's basically just a group of breeders from a certain breed who have meetings on things like, where will the next show be. So Kennel Clubs aren't bad. Why does everyone think that purebred dog breeders are bad. The clubs aren't bad it's only a select few breeds, that seem to be the majority of all breeds. Why can't people understand that the breeds aren't bad. A lot of breeds do have health conditions but at least you know what they are. With crossbred and mixed breeds it's just a random guess of what health condition they will have.

I'm a dog breeder, I don't consider myself bad. I don't breed dogs for profit because... where do you think this 'profit' is going? If I made profit from my dogs, it would go to my dogs. But I don't make profit from them. Unless you count the amount of fun I get from spending time with them, but I reckon your talking about money. I won't even consider your personal problems with me, because I don't have any personal problems with you and you don't know me. But, this is really annoying your categorizing all dog breeders and kennels. I am not a bad person, I breed my dogs because they are amazing. I only use dogs that will benefit the breed. And, I have never used a father over his daughter. Or cousins or nephews. I don't agree with that line breeding. I don't agree with puppy farming or backyard breeding. I am a reputable dog breeder. I don't overbreed my dogs and I do my best to improve the breed, not just by keeping to the standard, but by doing what's best for my dogs and their health. 'Reputable breeders, sometimes dubbed “hobby breeders,” do not breed puppies for a profit. They do it for the betterment of the breed, for the love of dogs, and… well… for the fun of it.' I hope you understand, that I don't know you so I can't judge you, but I am entitled to my own opinion, and so are you.

The thing is, most breeds' purpose is to be cute or look cool. They have an aesthetic puropose. Which is not necessarily linked to physiological quality. They do try to have healthier dogs, but only after they achieve their aesthetical objective. It is not the main priority. In some cases, like bulldogs and pugs, it's their actual look which directly causes their disfunctions, making it impossible to solve their health problems. In addition, the more effective way to create and maintain a specific breed, is inbreeding. You need to isolate your dogs from the general genetic pool to make them look different, only allowing your dogs to mate with similar dogs. This causes many things. The founder effect is when you take a small piece of population and isolate it from the rest. Genetic proportions randomly change, allowing for negative genes to become more frequent and positive genes to be less frequent. Ask the Amish for more information. Also check bloodtype world maps. If you combine this with selective breeding by aesthetics, any negative gene that had become frequent will survive. And if they are bound to one of the desired characteristics, they will even rise. And also rises the chances for recessive negative alleles (gens with ilnesses that you need to inherit from both paretns) to meet, which causes a rise on genetic malfunctions. Ask the european monarchs and their haemophilia for more information. And finally there is something called "hybrid vigor". It is widely known by breeders (whether they breed animals or plants) that if you mix very different genomes, the offspring is healthier and stronger. If you mix two different purebreeds, their descendance will be much healthier and will resist almost all diseases that affected their parents thasnks to their combined resistances to different things. There is no such thing as responsible breeding, because selective breeding by itself is harmful. We need to stop buying dogs because they are cute, so that breeders don't need to keep these toxic ways. You all claim to love dogs, so do what is best for them and adopt shelter mutt and strong dogs, and avoid buying beautiful purebreeds.

Selective breeding is a tool. It can be used to improve breeds or it can be a detriment. I agree there is a strong focus on appearance with groups like AKC. Instead of writing off selective breeding all together, we should change the focus to breeding dogs to be healthier. Many mutts are the outcome of people not fixing their dogs. I would rather see people purposefully and selectively breeding dogs for good health and good traits.
@klayman2
@klayman2 10 лет назад
A lot of breeds of dogs were made for working in specific ways however, a lot on the other hand were made just for looks. Dogs like mastiffs, German shepherds, collies, retrievers were bred selectively to make sure they could do a specific job the easiest possible, the mastiffs were bred to be large and muscular and retrievers were bred to have better swimming ability for hunters to retrieve their quarries.
@Arskite
@Arskite 10 лет назад
"Healthier" isn't so easy though. What you perceive as better health when breeding may lead to other issues in a few generations' time. Genetics is really complex. No one deliberately bred dogs to be unhealthy, it just happens. Same with any inbreeding of any species.
@testing7802
@testing7802 6 лет назад
YES, and this is why most purebred are unhealthy, because of the plethora of backyard breeders who dominate the purebred "market". They really shouldn't be having all these health issues but unfortunately amateurs have no idea what they are doing, not paying attention to pedigrees and health testing! Careful line breeding is the hallmark of a healthy purebred pet, and when done correctly should only improve health and temperament.
@MrsVrba
@MrsVrba 3 года назад
Good points... the big takeaway I got was that the problems in AKC purebred dogs COULD BE CORRECTED THROUGH OUTCROSSING. Back during the development of modern breeds, this was commonplace. What I wished Adam had mentioned, though, was that mixed breeds DESIGNED to be mixes (aka “designer dogs” like the labradoodle, goldendoodle, puggle, morkie, and so many others) are often puppy mill produced, have purebred parents who are not sound genetic representatives of their breeds, and will grow up to have just as many genetic problems as purebreds. Shelter mixes, often mixed for generations, are much sounder examples of hybrid vigor.

Graceful Dad. Very true, we have six dogs on our farm, 3 were bought directly from the breeders and three were adopted. With adopted dogs you sign up for a lot more work, we had to work through the abuse they previously suffered, behavioural problems, separation anxiety, fear for the most random things, limited socialization skills with other dogs and people etc etc. It is worth it to know that you made their life better but I do not think everyone is able to cope with it. You have to put in months and years of work and accept that they may never be the same as "normal" dogs. For example, our one rescue does not make a single sound, she does not bark/cry/growl, even though she is able to. Adopting is something you should seriously think about before you do it, especially if you don't know anything about the history of the dog.
@fluffcat5510
@fluffcat5510 7 лет назад
E'Louise Botes are you freaking kidding me? "Normal" what kind of planet do you live on because adopting a dog is much more rewarding. I am talking about pet dogs here not work dogs. Every dog is different, and I know by volunteering at a shelter for a long time. There is nothing wrong with shelter dogs, the only dogs that have the problems are the inbred monsters made by humans.
@ellieb5617
@ellieb5617 7 лет назад
FluffCat 5. Calm down. I was relating my own experience with adopting dogs. The dogs we adopted came from previously abusive homes and it took a long time and a lot of effort to work through the problems they had. I am not sure if every person would be able to handle that. Not everyone who gets a dog is willing to take a few weeks off work to work through separation anxiety for example - as I had to do with our one dog. Not everyone is willing to work for weeks on end with a dog that flinches away from people because she believed she would be beaten instead of petted. I am not implying there is anything wrong with shelter dogs. Do you think I would own three of them if I did? I was merely stating that depending on the history of the dog in question there may be additional things to consider when adopting. But, yet again, the RU-vid comment section has proven to be a place where nuance and respectful debate is impossible.
@fluffcat5510
@fluffcat5510 7 лет назад
E'Louise Botes I was angry before and sorry about that. I see your point. The solution to this then would be to adopt a puppy before even considering buying a dog. Because you may not find one right away, but if you are patient then you will find the right dog for you. Never buy! I can't stop you from buying, but I can at least try! But thank you for working with those dogs

I can’t explain how much I love this video. Sure some breeders may be “reliable” but just the fact that there are so many things wrong with purebreds is just horrible. I have a mutt (chihuahua mix) and she has never had any health problem. She is super healthy compared to all the “fancy purebreds” on instagram. Adoption is a way better way to get a dog, plus don’t we have enough dogs? Why make more while others are DYING

First generations mixed breeds won't necessarily be safe. The benefits of breed mixing comes from several generations of mutts. And like Erin B stated before you also run the risk of bringing undesirables into the gene pool, so you'll have to be wary of what you allow to breed with your mutts.

Clubs of purebred breeders would not like it and call that person ugly names. This is at least the situation in my country. It is obvious here that people who sell very expensive purebred dogs hate all those who sell or give for free mutts because then the purebred breeders have a problem to sell their fucked up expensive dogs. It is the same with cats, rodents and other animals. I have guinea pigs as pets for 18 years, normal mutts from petstore or shelter, and all of them lived 6-9 years, while the purebred piggies usually die at the age of 5 or less. There were born purebred piggies in Germany who couldn´t breath because their noses were too short. Guinea pigs are not able to breath with their mouth, so it is even more destructive for them than for dogs. :-( But the short and round head is what purebred guinea pigs should look like according to retards who damage them. People abuse and damage everything. :-(

My bulldog is a healthy 12 year old dog that's still very active, but has seizures about 3 times every 2-3 months. We love him, and have since bred him for another bulldog that has a breathing problem, but humans did this. Bulldogs have a tragic history of bullfighting where they were bred to hang on to bull's noses the longest, hence the name, bulldog. Bulldog owners smashed their face to hang on to the bulls longer. Bulldogs would be a lot better off if we didn't screw them over. The human race as a whole just sucks. We act like the world is our playground and I really hate it.

Let's stop bashing on breeding too bud, purebred dogs have their places too, I mean there are plenty of dog breeds that, if properly bred, are very healthy, beagles, xolos, Australian cattle dogs, of course some breeds are extremely unhealthy, but that's because we need an overhaul on breeding. It's not a purely black and white issue. Properly bred dogs are bred for temperament and screened for health issues, whereas mutts usually aren't. Mutts can be amazing, but they also have their issues as well

THANK YOU. I saw an intact, overweight Bulldog walking around with his owner last 4th of July. I told my sister "That dog is literally going to die. How is it even a live right now." And I usually tell people that brachycephalic (smooshy faced dogs) are constantly suffering with every breath they take and that they shouldn't even be alive right or bred. It like they're breathing through a straw their whole lives, can get ingrown tails, and only live 6 years (like said in the video). How they can't even breed, or give birth naturally. I also bring up how horrible Cavalier King Charles Spaniel has it. As said in the video, their skull is too small for their brains. From a different video I heard that 50% of them have agonizing migraines and by the time they're older 90% of them have something wrong with their heart. Most breeders are just selfish and want money, not to better breeds. It makes me so mad whenever people don't fix their freaking dogs. Their dog is gonna die atleast 2 years sooner if intact. They're more likely to attack and to be attacked. They're more likely to run away. Intact dog's are more likely to develop certain illnesses and cancers as well. And we don't need any more unwanted puppies in this world. We have 300 million homeless dogs, and 200 million homeless cats. Every litter of 10 is taking the place of a perfectly good shelter dog. And yeah! Then there's wolf dog breeders. 80% of wolfdogs get put down before the age of 3. Imagine being a breeder and knowing that in a litter of 10, that 8 are going to be killed. 🙄 OH and my parent's always complained that my uncle's dog is an inbred silver lab, but they dog a freaking inbred blue nosed pitbull puppy??
@lenitaa7938
@lenitaa7938 3 года назад
No such thing as a 'Silver Lab'! Cavaliers are Born with several heart diseases! Not just one! One can be responsible owner of unspayed/unneutered dog! Why invite health issues with forced sterilization and early menopause? In Northern Europe, it's illegal to spay or neuter dogs without a serious health issue! Their bone growth, hearts, thyroids, etc are affected by inducing a menopause! More prone to certain cancers, as well! Even worse when sterilization is done to very young pups before an year of age! Also, why not just do a vasectomy/ tie tubes, instead of a full removal of organs that produce the necessary hormones for the body organs and bones to stay healthy!? Because the public doesn't demand it! N Europe doesn't have an overpopulation of dogs!

I agree with all you said except for "fixing" male dogs being necessary. According to studies when a dog is fixed too early (before being 1 year old), it harms it's bone and muscle development and causes problems with joints and there is a higher chance of cancer, especially for bigger breeds (labradors for example). Yes, fixing dogs can prevent some types of cancer - prostate cancer. But if I cut off your legs, you would also be less prone to have toe mold. I also think there is a correlation between fixed dogs (their owners being rich, giving them good food and exercise) and longer lives of dogs (so the longer live is not caused by the fix, but the sources and lifestyle of the owners). As for agression and being attacted, it depends on the breed, there are breeds that are naturally more prone to "defend" their owners (bull breeds for example, I know there are many people who call them nanny dogs, but they are really very sensitive = prone to exaggerate the danger they see in foreign dogs, people, even kids), so they probably should be fixed, especially when owned by inexperienced people. Otherwise most dogs are okay, they need to be well socialized you know. As for "unfixed" dogs being more prone to run away, well you should have a good fence, cutting off balls of your dog to prevent him from running away from you is too cruel and lazy. If the dog runs away from you when being off leash, that's a problem of not being a good owner (the dog should obey you). Our dog is not fixed, its ancestors were mostly od hunting breeds and still he comes back when we order him to come back (dog is not a baby, you should be strict with him/her when training him as a puppy. I live in a country where standard is not to "fix" dogs. We are number 6 most dogs per population ratio. There are no stray dogs, we have a good net of shelters, dogs don't get killed in them. Most people know that they should train and socialize their dogs and monitor where they are and what they are doing. We are a very dog-friendly country (Europe, Czechia). You can bring your dog on public transport, to restaurant, pubs, outdoor cinema... We asked our vet if we should fix our dog and she said, that it's not necessary. Our mutt (labrador, bernese, charles spaniel, beagle mix) is a very sweet gentle and mild dog, we love him :)

I think what some people are missing is that there's a difference between "I own a corgi" and "I own a corgi that is bred from only the best of its lineage which has the exact height and weight of a perfect specimen corgi after breeding generations in order to do so". Many dog breeds are "man made" and make fantastic animals i.e. Collies and Shepherds. Dog breeds are fine, but it's fact that people inbreed dogs to get a "perfect" version to sell them and make tons of money. I suggest looking in to what a puppy mill is if you still have doubts on that.
