The Black-and-white Warbler

The Black and White Warbler is fun to watch as they move about. This, combined with their curious nature and bold coloration makes them a favorite warbler for beginner birders since they are easy to spot and recognize.
Measuring around 4 - 5 inches in length and weighing almost half an ounce, these medium-sized warblers have a short neck and tail, and a long slightly downcurved bill.
The difference between the sexes, males have a lot more black streaking, especially on their underparts and cheek. Females and juveniles are similar to one another but with paler plumage and less streaking, also note a light brownish yellow on their flanks and a white throat and grayish ear patch.
Spending their winters as far south as Central and South America. In these tropical locations, they can be seen in gardens and other urban locations, wetlands, fruit orchards, and many types of forests. During migration, they can be found in woodlots and forests in riparian areas. Look for them hanging out in deciduous and mixed forests, especially with trees of mixed ages.
The Black and white warbler is the only member of the Genus genus Mniotilta, which means Moss-plucking a reference to how they probe bark and moss for insects, the bulk of their diet is larva from moths and butterflies. Many other insects are preyed on, such as ants, leaf beetles, wood borers, leafhoppers, and weevils, they also eat arachnids like spiders.
During Migration and at the beginning of Spring listen for their easily heard and kind of squeaky weesy song,
Another call used by both sexes is a sharp chit and pit call which can have many variations.
Black-and-white Warbler nests are round open cups around 5 inches or more in diameter and 5 inches high and are made from dry leaves, pine needles, bark strips, and grass. 4-6 eggs that measure 0.6 -0.8 inches in length and 0.5-0.6 inches in width are laid and are creamy white, pale bluish, or greenish-white with speckles of brown or lavender. The female incubates them.
Black and white warblers are common and their population is estimated by Partners in flight at around 20 million. On the Continental Concern Score, they rate a 10 out of 20 and are not on the 2014 state of birds Watch list.

Ha ha. I had one, for a few days, coming to my feeder, right on my window sill. I tried to get a picture-- I thought I was seeing a rare albino wren or something. After seeing the video, he was prob just curious as to what the other birds were doing, since I only had seeds on the menu.

Thanks for mentioning Light's Out! If anyone wants to help and lives near a city, search for your local Light's Out organization and send them a message! I'm one of the volunteers for our local one and sadly have already found 3 black an white warblers that fell victim to window collisions just this spring migration season alone 😞
@LesleytheBirdNerd

😞 that breaks my heart. Those sweet little birds just trying to get back to their breeding territory to produce and raise the next generation. It is so important for us to get involved in making sure we prevent these collisions. Thank you for all the work you do to help.

A Black and White Warbler was what got me started into bird watching over five years ago. I was waiting for my car to be repaired at a Firestone shop near the Universal Mall in busy Miami (of all places) when I noticed this bird jumping around the branches of a tree in the parking lot. I looked it up on the internet when I got home and the rest is history. I've now become very acquainted with many species and am constantly looking for birds when I'm outdoors.

These spotlights are great. I got into birding just over a year ago and I stumbled on this particular character while hiking back to my car. There was a clearing with a thicket and songs I hadn't heard before so I setup my tripod and hung out for a bit. Sure enough I spotted these interesting characters. They had a lot of interactions with each other. I watched them dance sideways up and down stalks of younger bushes. I look forward to seeing them again.

Really glad you gave some press to this very underappreciated bird. They aren't the most colorful warbler, they don't have the most complex song, and they aren't endangered. But they have all kinds of heart and for an amateur ethologist, they're a dream come true. My very first scientific paper, in ornithology, very nearly featured these birds. (Sadly I couldn't find ENOUGH of them and had to switch to Downy/Hairy woodpeckers instead). Black-and-White Warblers will always have a special place in my heart.

I had a couple of red breasted grossbeaks show up on Mother's Day, never saw them in our yard before. Nice treat! I imagine they were migrating through. The week before I saw a brown headed cowbird, who I never saw before, and haven't seen since, so I guess he or she was also just passing through. Our residents are blue jays, cardinals, doves, sparrows, a woodpecker, house finch, robins, and a few starlings. We occasionally see a hawk.

Just after our new house was finished and we moved in I walked out onto my front porch and saw a pair. (Columbia, SC). I see them around the Congaree River as well. Went to my parents house a few weeks back to help take wedding photos which I never take photos of people, just not my style. I went out birding on my parents property after and found two different male B&W Warblers. One had a mouth full of worms or caterpillars. Now if it were alone it would have just eaten them. This leads me to believe that it had a mate near by with babies. Though where my parents live is just below where the map says they breed. Also saw an Oven Bird and Wood Thrush while in the woods, all in all it was a nice day.

Ha! Not so easy to spot! They and a few other warblers I keep hearing but can’t get my eyes on them I’m so frustrated! However I did get to see one last year- I was walking alongside a back road & using Merlin just to see what might be there in the trees that I could watch for .. and the B&W warbler came up- I never knew we had such a neat little bird in SW Wisconsin! And a moment or two after it came up as being heard by Merlin, I saw it peeking out through the branches at me.. This year tho, I have heard them in multiple areas and I search with bins and scan the branches, and I stop and wait as still as I can.. and just can’t see them. Doesn’t help that often it’s difficult to tell which of the many trees around me they are on. Magnolia warbler & that darn chestnut sided warbler too I’ve been searching for - hoping to get some pics.. and they just won’t show themselves to me. I wish all the warblers were as fearless & showy as the yellow warblers here- I see them everywhere!

Many of these birds when I google to see where they are located at in the US it shows my area however as I said I've never seen these little guys. I'd say there's a lot of birds we don't see that are around us, I live in a very rural area but have homes around me and I put out bird feeders all year long yet I've always noticed even when I was a kid growing up or I'd go on hikes that close to houses you'll see birds and even hear them singing yet the further into the forest you go the less you see and hear (althou I'm sure there's some there, it's just perhaps they're so unused to people that they go quiet and maybe even hide). Another thing I've noticed is that when I was a kid the night skies would be littered with lightning bugs, so many as a kid you could run around and catch a jar full in no time but I don't see as many anymore. Similar has happened with the whiperwill, at night you'd hear so many of them and now sadly I've only heard one a handful of times. I keep thinking perhaps they're quiet because we've had two very dry spring/summers back to back and the one's I've heard this year are always the night after it's rained. It's not hunting or anything as people around here aside from the older people no longer hunt so it must be something else going on. This is why it's important we all do our part to take notice of the birds in our area and do what we can for them to survive and reproduce and carry on.

Another great video! Such good footage. I love how the warbler considered feeding the nuthatch babies, that was so cool.

This is one of those things where it works out for everyone. Turning out lights also helps with the power bill. Also, as humans, getting a view of the night sky always helps put things into perspective. We are all humans on this rock in space, and we are in it together.

They’re not super common in my part of Texas but I managed to see one earlier this spring, he was super cute.

Thank you for the wonderful presentation, Lesley! I did not know that Black-and-White Warblers forage on the ground and that they are such bold little birds. I loved the curious one in the video who had to check out those other birds' nests 😄 That was really adorable!! I saw my first Black-and-White Warbler while birdwatching with a group a few years back, but I have not seen one since then. My city recently joined Audubon's Lights Out program, and I am actually seeing many more warblers than usual this spring! I hope that maybe I'll get the chance to see a Black-and-White Warbler!

Great video! You actually have footage of the nuthatch nestling feeding contemplation and the black and white warbler following the chickadee? That is so cool! I've seen yellow warblers this spring. Not this one. Not yet. Hope to see one soon!

Excellent video! B&Ws are one of my favs. I think the main threat they face is habitat loss and pesticide use on their wintering grounds (Latin America)

Beautiful warbler. Unfortunately lots of these B&W warblers die every spring in New York City due to collisions with skyscrapers.

I love your videos, I've just discovered your channel. I was wondering if you'd ever do a video on house sparrows. I know some people see them as pests but I love them and are really entertaining to watch.

Hi Jonah, thanks for checking out my channel :) I would love to do a video on House Sparrows and I do plan on making one at some point but it won't be any time soon because my schedule is already set for the next few months. Thank you for suggesting this video idea, and btw I agree with you. They are very entertaining, and I have always thought that they are so adorable.
