Here are some tips on how to approach The Black Bear, and on how to practice in general. A piper should never ever skip embellishments... but sometimes you have to choose between playing a tune at tempo or playing it cleanly.

I just stumbled across your site by complete accident tonight! The last time I had seen you, was in your video on practicing strike-ins, which I thought was SOOOO helpful when I started!! Glad to see you are still teaching! Black Bear and Cabar Feidh are two faves of mine, and I sure wish you’d been there when I fought to learn them! You are a gifted instructor!

I really appreciate your advice about simplification of the music. That works out great for me. Instead of working to improve my ability, I can just bring the music down to my level of play and never improve. If I'm playing with a band inappropriate to my skill level, it may not be what anyone else is playing but at least I can get through the music include myself because in a band, it's all about me. I have trouble with the second beat of the first measure. I just made everything a low G and took out all the gracenotes. Works great. Good advice.

Challenging for me is the first bar, last line of the second part. Great tutorial! You helped me a lot! I can do it at 100 BPM now :-) The band is playing some light music for Burns night and this is in one of our sets…

I am working on this tune and your clip was very helpful. Thanks a lot. I find the last phrase in the tune (before the repetition to be the hardest, also because when paying it feels like you have to press on the accelerator to stay with the beat. Surely a technical tune, requiring patience. Lots of it. Again, Thanks

Hi Jenna I find the hardest part is the last line 2 nd part, just after where you were repeating when going high A to low A. It’s excruciating !! Will keep at it tho using your tips many thanks

BB is a tricky tune, you're dead right. To pull it off, one needs to play it EXACTLY to the written music. It's a popular tune I'm regularly getting asked to play, but as a piece of music I don't find it particularly pleasing myself. Playing it, it always feels more of a technical exercise in technique. Also, I often find bands never ever play it correctly, especially the second part when in faster tempo.

Really great tutorial, Jenna, and a very professionally done video overall! I get a LOT of requests for this tune. It's not one I grew up with, perhaps it's more popular in the states? In any case, I'll be sure to send my viewers and my Facebook group members to your Black Bear tutorial! Happy piping :) PS. Thanks again for the lesson!

Black Bear is a My Next Goal piece (79th's Farewell, too, for that technical development the CoP sets forth in its tutor). Maybe you can answer a question I've had for years: I have an old vinyl album of pipe and drum marches with an upbeat Black Bear on it, and I can't tell from the recording quality whether they played it to a strathspey beat or if they simply shaved the tune. It really skips along, at around 120bpm iirc. Not that I was cleverly able to parse such things at the time... one of my first two pipe albums, the other being a recording of the Edinburgh Tattoo 1972 . No matter how you slice it, this was old stuff, which I obtained about 1973. Bit me with the piping bug, you bet. Subscribed... and that's up against competition like Ally and Slow Air Sunday.
@JennaBagpipes
@JennaBagpipes Год назад
120 sounds like typical Scotland march tempo! It's crazy fast, not technically in strathspey time but you're right, it feels about the same. Ie. - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Q-_CD7KwVj0.html Thanks for subscribing!

If I may remark, one thing seems to help is if you're set up so the weight of your arm is *almost* enough to start your drones going -- so that your squeeze effort is light and you can give all your attention to your music.

@@JennaBagpipes I think your tutorials are excellent. I have been struggling with "The Black Bear Hornpipe", especially the last phrase of the last part. I have slowed right down with a metronome and been working on it as you suggested. It is really helpful. Do you recommend the longer practise chanter over the traditional length? Your thoughts. Dave
