Let's not forget the great Dave Mason wrote this for Traffic. I saw him live last year. Or year before last (COVID). He was awesome. Go see and support him if he performs near you.

Yes great band and Dave Mason's best but still think Joe Cocker stole the show

Hot damn. I was feeling really low today and then I came across this. I will probably go back to feeling low...but at least I had seven minutes of THIS. Music is always the answer.

Joe Cocker put a stamp on this groove that has yet to be equaled, much less eclipsed. Granted there are some interesting covers out there; Three Dog Night immediately comes to mind. But for the perfect match of voice, musical arrangement (isolate and follow the bass and percussion lines through one time), and depth of interpretation, Joe nails it for me every time I hear a different version! 👑🎸🎵

I'd like to think Traffic remains the best, considering they did it first. lol I do like the more rockin versions, too...but something just resonates from the original that hasn't been copied or surpassed. Other honorable mentions: Huey Lewis, Lou Rawls, 5th Dimension, Ohio Players, Bar-Kays, Jackson 5 & Isaac Hayes.

So true. Cocker and his bands really dialed in this groove. It’s hard to teach it, you have to feel it.

Dave Mason wrote this song when he was with Traffic. I had this Traffic album in the late 60s, maybe early 70s. Yes, Steve Winwood was in Traffic. But there were other groups who performed this great song besides Grand Funk Railroad, Three Dog Night, Joe Cocker … Badfinger did a really great version as did Earth, Wind & Fire. This is a song that can cross a lot of versions but will always hold up because it's a really great song! Time always will tell.

I'm glad Black Crowes have been around for quite a while. They've been good since I first heard them in the early 80s. They've been keeping great songs alive and putting their own spin on it but also keeping the old artists alive. The one I really like from the early 80s was Hard to Handle that Otis Redding did in the 60s. All y'all have to remember all the songs of today almost always derived from the songs and artists from our past. In the 60s the Beatles first started with blues songs from America, as did The Who, Cream/Eric Clapton, the Rolling Stones, too many to name. Listen to a lot of their first recordings or even when they first started as bands in local taverns. They all got their influence from decades earlier, but I loved their style and they ended up making it their own. So have bands who came along in the 70s, 80s, and even now. I would only hope that this kind of music will keep making an impact on the younger generation and they will realize that music is an evolution and that we should never forget our past as far as music history goes, from Big Band era and earlier, and continue. Music is the song of our past, present and future. I know, sounds trite, but hey, I'm an old lady now who has listened, been to too many concerts, dated guys in the band, and WAY too many other stuff to even think about anymore. But I love music! Always have, always will! KEEP ROCKIN'!

I believe Traffic was the first band to issue this song in 1968, written by Dave Mason. I had this vinyl LP in the late 60s). Grand Funk Railroad issued it a year or so later (also had that LP vinyl). Joe Cocker made it his own in 1969 and I think it was at Woodstock. I never got a chance to see Traffic perform this song, but I did see GFR perform it in the early 70s (GFR was at their finest in the 70s, JMO), saw Joe Cocker perform it in the late 80s. All really good … but you need to listen to Badfinger perform it on the BBC LP (pretty rare LP) … Check it out! Much better than GFR could ever do! I think it will change your mind, but it may only at the least, expand your music horizons! Enjoy!

By FAR my favorite band. But on that tour with Jackie Green, they dropped the backup singers for some reason. Those ladies are as much a part of the Crowes sound as Chris, and their absence was most missed on songs like Feelin Alright.

When the Crowes first hit, Chris acknowledged the Rod & Stones comparisons but went out of his way to mention the heavy influence of Humble Pie (Steve Marriott) & the great Joe Cocker. Has any other band done 'Space Captain'? This is a great version, held back only slightly by the keyboard player, who can't quite match the groove/rhythm/tempo of the amazing Chris Stainton.
