Hi All Wolf Lord Rho here,
Today we are taking a look at the human reaction to The Black Dragons chapter! When you're stranded on a ship being raided by Dark Eldar, and salvation takes the form of The Black Dragons. Who is the more intimidating?
The events we are discussing today are from the short story "The Tribute of Flesh". As always I recommend you read the story for yourself first! Not only do you get the most enjoyment this way but we help to support the great Black Library and Games Workshop!

@@psychedashell they're rumored to be Salamanders descendants. So yeah, instead of being nice and killing people with fire (which is one of the most painful ways to go) they're nice and have horns and wolverine claws. Progress.

I find it hilarious that the Black Dragons are feared because of their looks and yet at the same time they are a Salamanders successor chapter so they are like giant spiked teddy bears. You know if teddy bears were 8 feet tall and had a predilection for tearing Xenos apart with their arm spikes.

Actually the Black Dragons are nowhere NEAR as nice as Salamanders. They aren't total assholes either though. They do what they are told, kill who they should, protect who they can, and do so with intimidation and efficiency.

The Black Dragons are my favorite chapter not just because they’re scary weirdos, but because they’re scary weirdos that are humble enough to not see themselves as “new and improved”. They accept themselves and do their best to help.

I just fell in love when i figured out they are a succesor chapter of the Salamanders, it makes them scarey but friendly, they are basicly 11 foot tall scary pickey "mosnters" but this monsters will give nightmears to your enemies and protect you, just awesome I WANT MORE OF THEM

The Black Dragons are my favorite Chapter and one of the reasons is that they don't pay much attention to the rules but still are loyalist to the Emperor with the same dedication, if not more zeal than the Black Templars. To them it does not matter who or how many the enemy is, the enemy will be purged by any means at their disposal. After all the goal of the Space Marines is to purge the xenos and that is what the Black Dragons excel at. Some of the Black Dragons are 10feet tall, combine that with their characteristics, it does make for an impressive and monstrous sight to behold. They have turned what others call a curse and turned it in to a xenos slaughtering weapon. For those who don't like the Black Dragons, remember their saying ''You may call me a mutant. You may call me a monster. But never forget that I am still the Emperor's monster and that my so-called curse might be all that stands between you and the darkness.“

I just had to do a little double-take, because that last line... It was a little touch of fluff I included in the description of an image commission - the friendly fellow in the middle of the video, in fact. (If you liked that one, go check out Disarmonia's gallery!) And while I'm amazed to see someone remember it and humbled that it apparently resonated with people, it's far from official. Just to make sure, no bad feelings or anything :)

Their primaries look like regular Salamanders, seeing as Balasarius was able to remove all impurities from the gene seed. The Black Dragons have a horribly mutated geneseed that makes them that way

That’s one reason the Salamanders kinda don’t like them. When Guilliman split up the legions, Vulkan and the Salamanders where left alone as there wasn’t enough of them to do so. There shouldn’t be any Salamanders successor chapters. The Black Dragons shouldn’t exist. The fact they do means someone lied and misused their gene seed to create a new chapter. The Salamanders are not pleased.

Skywatcher Adept Unlike most other chapters, Salamanders will still for the most part work with chapters they don’t like. In The Black Dragons case they can even serve stints as scouts and basic battle brothers. It’s less of a hate for their chapter, and more of a hate for the fact someone used their gene seed without permission.

The cursed founding chapters are some of the more interesting Chapters. That really need more expansion in the lore but with the arrival of the primaris marines I don't see it happening

Dragons will retain their mutations, I guarantee that. Their curse was hidden so deep even the original creators of the chapter didnt knew what went wrong and their apothecaries actually encourage the appearance of bone growths.

Antogonis isn't a person, it's a planet. I agree with KiNiko and The Death of Antagonis is one of the best books in the space marine battles series. I also wish that Black Library would produce more novels staring The Black Dragons, as they are one the most fascinating space marine chapters.

I love the black dragons! They the hints of them being of Vulkan always bleeds through in how they react to normal humans. I just like the idea of the scariest chapter to see in the flesh is the one of the ones most likely to try and save you.

to me it feels like the Black Dragons are not as cold towards mortals as other chapters and it looked like the captain made a pretty human conversation with the woman. Maybe the rumored link between them and the Salamanders is shown here, in the way they both view mortals?

@@redsampler2017 Well to be honest with you I really want to read the book, because and I too am curious of the behavior of different chapters towards civilians and how they process the interactions with them. The Space Sharks are interesting, because they're trained to control their emotions and to shatter the enemy and the fact that they're the silent death to the enemy and making their allies concerned if they're monsters is perfect.

@@sk00b72 yep i agree. these space marines are made to protect the human race... if they are not up to the task they fail in my book..;-) space marines are upgraded humans and if they lose sight of what they once where they are not considered humans by me anymore than the creatures of the warp. so yeah i decided that is where i draw the line (for me) as in how i percieve the space marines. my spacemarines and my homeworld life a live that is worth living. sure it can be dark and grim an gloom.. but at least they can retire..

I love it when xenos and heretics get destoryed by the warriors of the Imperium. And honestly can there be a better way for the vengeful hammer of the Emperor to arrive than by blasting or drilling their way into the ship they're about to liberate? The Space Marines are my favourite faction in 40K and the Ultramarines are my favourite chapter but I still loved the little jab at them here. I just like the Space Marines in general, their absolute disdain for the enemes of man and their willingness to fight any of them even if it means their certain death makes reading their stories so much fun.

I built a Black Dragon army for a buddy. Used Toothpicks for bone claws, the wood grain worked good under the paint to make it more organic. Green stuff for molding forearm sheaths , and tyrinid bits for the horns on the helmets.

The Allfather protects. The Sons of Vulcan are great. His Sons of the Black Dragons Chapter do not have it easy and yet, they fight in the Name of the Emperor. May their Chapter never fall, I like this Marines.

Pure awesomeness please more in your vid on this story, great as always, already sharing it. i've always liked the black dragons however I wish I knew more about them especially since they are 1 of the few to survive the cursed founding, even though people treat them as impure, they cared enough to save these people when many others would have not.

Black Dragons and Carcharodon Space Marines are my personal favorites. I love this bit about the Black Dragons you shared. It shows that even though, there appearance, can make them seem inhuman. They are still Space Marines and the Captain actually cared about the well being of that girl and even waited for her to recover. He was understanding that, to her, they were monsters there to take the place of the monsters already on the ship. I hope we can see something similar happen with the Carcharodon's.

I’m glad I have some context now about the Black Dragons. Even the Emperor says himself, there’s the monster out there in the darkness and then there’s the monsters we create to fight them.

It is an interesting perspective to have experienced, when you're using a Space Marine avatar in VR, and everyone else seems to be the size of children compared to you. Feels like if you make one wrong step or turn, you might accidentally crush someone. Occasional low ceilings or door frames can also be amusing challenges to deal with. Being a Dreadnought is even weirder. None of your limb positions quite match up to reality, and your viewpoint is bizarre. You feel huge yet short at the same time. Using an Eldar Wraithguard is like being on stilts.

to be fair, the "you won't find us hard to find" line is a mixture of the fact they're not going to hide, they're gonna go in there and screw eldar up, but also the fact that they are very distinctive

They did have a few rules and a special unit called the dragon claws. It was in a white dwarf chapter approved article detailing a few of the cursed 21st founding chapters.

I absolutely love the Black Dragons, one of my favorite non first founding chapters. Their Space Marine Battles novel was one of my top three, of that series.

There is a certain amount of irony how a member of an astartes chapter who is constantly considered suspect because of their mutations shows so much more restraint and humanity than you would expect from one of the better known chapters. If someone had reacted like that to an Ultramarine I could only imagine they would be called a heretic and end up leaving nothing more than a stain on the nearest bulkhead to show they ever existed.

Great video on the Black Dragons. That line of the Ultramarines is just classic, even other chapters portray the Ultramarines as the Space Marine poster boys. Glad the woman didnt claim loyalty to the ruinous powers when she first saw the Black Dragons, would have been awkward. Great video as always, thanks!

There is a sadness within this chapter.. "we are never wanted, but we are just as necessary." imagine being one of them tasked to save a hive city or defend an outpost only to be feared as much as the enemy or worse to be mistaken as an enemy..
