The Blake's Hitch & The Closed Climbing System | Arborist Knots

The Blake's Hitch tied with the tail of your climbing line - it just doesn't get any simpler than that. This is the classic set-up for beginners getting into tree climbing. For production climbers, I consider this set-up essential knowledge, allowing for a secondary tie-in in a pinch, or an emergency bail-out when all you have is a rope and a carabiner.

My first introduction to climbing last week… A guy who was gracious enough to meet me and show me a few things that I never even met before… He showed me this system except he called the knot a monkey fist or a taught line hitch and it was tied a bit different … And I was not comfortable with it…it seemed loose and not secure .However, it did work… We went 40 feet up into a tree… And repelled down. I like this version way better…

A Blake's hitch is all you need takes two seconds to tie works perfectly and experienced climbers use this almost 100 percent of the men I've worked with for 40 years use this because it works great
@kellytrees

It's also reliable. Those rope wrenches are nice but I'd be worried about it malfunctioning. Blakes hitch set it and forget it.

@kellytrees

@@wyliehj I started climbing in '96 and most of these devices like the Zigzag didn't even exist. All we used for ascending the tree was the Blake's Hitch. It was the first knot I learned. All body thrusting up the tree. I don't know how the Zigzag works but I feel safer using a double line because I know I'm the only one in control of my climbing line. It also locks up on it's own when you let go of the knot. That's good just in case you slip off a limb or kick out with the spurs. There's no plastic or metal that can break unexpectantly. It's slower but whose in a rush when your life is on a rope.

Thanks for your most awesome video showing how to tie the Blake hitch! I started climbing in 93 and the knot I learned on was the tautline hitch with a bowlin as an anchor knot, I remember when I first saw the Blake’s hitch, it was used on its on in a closed system like you described, then with split tail system a bit later. Using your thumb for the first 2 wraps really helps make it easier to tie!

If I can add to this by saying if your tie in point is high up in a very tall tree and you have a very long decent, go slowly because it's rope on rope friction inside the knot and can melt the rope if descending too rapidly ! Thanks and Merry Christmas Tree-Muggs and family !
@CandC68
@CandC68 4 года назад
Yup. I designed a knot that was similar to this and a Prussic. When load testing it (not in trees or at height) the load would increase but the knot didn't move. The the load exceeded the knots strength. The knot jumped a foot down the line, melted and welded to its new location. Not what I had expected. LOL

I’ve been watching videos on the 2nd attempt of the north face of the Eiger in 1936. It ended in disaster. The Blake’s hitch may have allowed Kurtz to survive. He only had one good arm but he may have been able to tie this to the rope above him, and continue abseiling on that rope to avoid the knot that jammed in his carabiner, leaving him dangling up there. Just sort of a thought experiment. Great video! And he could’ve tied a stopper on the first rope so if the Blake slipped, it would hit the stopper

@Eric kicking liberals you could have to replace a new rope the same day if you use it wrong but it depends on how you use it, whether you use a friction saver or not, and how much of a load, as a rule once a year if all is good or if there is fraying esp if it's a rope that the jacket is the weight bearing element and the core just holds the shape of the rope. If you have a second thought retire it your life is worth more than the cost of a new rope.

Love this knot what is really nice is if you want you can use a slack tender pulley under it and take up your slack one handed so easily.
