Pro tip: Turn each cookware handle so it stays centered on the burner, but the handle hangs over the counter instead of out in space over the floor. That way, it's impossible to bump the handle with your body while you're moving around the area, which can cause spills and burns.

Great looking food there Sam, your cutting work reminded me of an idea I saw on Henshaws channel. A video using an "afro pik" with stainless steel tynes. It made cutting and dicing a lot easier and safter for people like us. I'm planning on picking one up soon, so as to maybe get back in the kitchen a little more.

I love that you hold and use your chef's knife properly. One of my biggest kitchen pet peeves. Well done Sam. I am an ex chef and the main cook in my household and may be loosing my vision (no diagnosis yet but preparing for it just in case) looking for all the tips I can get.

Oh yeah, definitely! I was a prep cook in a restaurant for about 15 years so definitely learned those proper kitchen techniques!

When you were cutting it sounded like you were bent over. Just a suggestion when you’re cutting you don’t have to bend over even though you’re legally blind stand up straight and tall and just used your finger as a guide to cut like hold the knife with one hand and hold whatever you cutting with the other and bend your fingers just a little bit and try cutting like that. Instead of bending over to cut because that’s what it sound like you were doing bending over try to stand up straight and tall and try it. That’s how a lot of us who is totally blind or just have a tiny bit of light perception that’s how we cut standing straight up and using one knife everything and then we gather together and then we put one hand on the handle and then the other hand like towards the end of the night and we open our hands straight like open it with a knife under a hand and we just use the handle to go chop chop chop back-and-forth like that try it that way to see if that will help.

Nice rant! I hate those machines too. There are a few that I can sort of read and the one at Food Lion I have memorized since I go there so much. Other than the strange looks from the cashier I have not had trouble getting help. Little things like that can ruin your day.

Mike Vosburgh you're absolutely right man, it can definitely ruin your day! That's hilarious, Food Lion, I haven't thought about that grocery store since I left North Carolina!

Idea/question: Might be helpful if you cooked while wearing a head lamp. Has anyone ever tried it and what have been your experiences?
@mike419100

Headlamps are great for resolving limited light issues - I can't live without mine - Feel free to do a video on them to spread the knowledge - following is the link to the one I have been using and highly recommend from Amazon - smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00UAJ1PXM/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_image?ie=UTF8&psc=1

4:20 Where did you get that cover and what is the name of it? How much was it? 8:47 That looks great. I would have forgone the onion but looks great. I like the flat range stove. They are much easier to clean.

1 that is NOT cheese. Lol. 2 if we ever meet I'm gonna show u better way doing that. 3 just put salt and peppet in the eggs little easier :)

agreed. Mate instead of having to tear slices up like that just get ready grated cheese. Then you can sprinkle it over the eggs. That's how I do it.

How do you know when your bacon is thoroughly cooked and how do you know if you are getting a shell in your cracked eggs before you put them in the pan these are just two of the questions that I have as a visually impaired person

Great video, my only comment would be tuck the strings from the sweatshirt in, you have flat top, but I teach my blind cooking kids not to have things dangle that could be like wicks for gas flames.

Sam, do you have any suggestions for blind people who cook with a glass top stove? I had the idea of a cover for the stove that would have holes for where the pans would fit but nobody makes anything like that and it might be a better idea than using dots.
@theblindlife
@theblindlife 8 лет назад
+Thomas Barretta wow, that's a great question! Let me talk with some low-vision friends of mine who have an independent living program to see if they have been the suggestions!

Really appreciate your video - Couple of questions: How can you tell when meat or chicken is cooked properly (not to under or over cook it) 2) I have a hard time slicing - I either slice too thick or too thin - Any suggestions ? Thanks in advancne.
@theblindlife
@theblindlife 4 года назад
I would definitely recommend getting a talking food thermometer. I have one and use it every time I cook any type of meat. Would not cook chicken without it, that’s for sure! I made a video once about proper knife techniques for the visually impaired. In that video I talk about slicing. They have food cutting guides that you can get to help with slicing. It looks like a comb that you stick into the food and then use the tines to cut the food evenly. That’s an option but I prefer to not worry too much if my carrots aren’t all sliced the same thickness, LOL!

How do you cut onions? i've always found getting close to onions, and watery eyes a bad combo
@theblindlife
@theblindlife 9 лет назад
Trevor Settles All those years working in a restaraunt, I may be immune to onions! lol If you watch my video where I show how to cut vegetables, you'll see that I don't need to bend over and watch what I'm doing so I don't get to close to them. Of course if it's a super strong onion it won't matter if I'm close or not, i'll be crying!
@JixieDyeAuthor
@JixieDyeAuthor 6 лет назад
Try dipping the onion in cold water first before you cut. I cut the onion into quarters then dip each quarter into water before I start cutting.

I know this video is old. have you tried a raised cutting board? it truly helps if I didn't have 1. I'd be hunched over like you we're in the video. I can barely step without being in pain and yes I am legally blind
@theblindlife
@theblindlife 7 лет назад
I've never tried a raised cutting board, that does sound pretty handy! I've made a video before about low vision contributing to back problems. What I would really love is a much higher countertop, maybe in my next house!
@SaltyJojo
@SaltyJojo 7 лет назад
Higher countertops can be tricky depends on what state you are in, the county and town/city because there is separate laws when it comes to Construction. Everything has to be state/county/city required. We are in Michagin and we had to redo a bathroom for my 9 yea old nephew who has cerebral palsy everything has to be a 5 ft. turn radius and so
@SaltyJojo
@SaltyJojo 7 лет назад
Oh yea if you can't find a raised cutting board you can make your own, mine ex. Wood cutting board and cabinet handles

How do you use the oven
@theblindlife
@theblindlife 3 года назад
I have bump dots on the oven that help me set the temperature. I also have really long oven gloves that protect my arms when I’m putting something in and out.
