In this historical analysis of “The Foggy Dew,” we'll see that the song is a lot more than Conor McGregor’s walkout song. The history behind this hundred-year-old song is a long and bloody one. To fully understand the Easter Rising and the emotions of the lyrics in “The Foggy Dew,” we first take a very general overview of some of the atrocities that occurred in Ireland under British rule. We then cover the 1916 rebellion for Irish independence, called the Easter Rising, and the song’s sorrowful commentary on the event.
As always, there’s only so much we can fit in each video, and a lot of interesting information gets left on the cutting room floor. Check out our sources for more info!

Yes, Conor has also walked out to 50 Cent's "I Get Money," but there's an unfortunate lack of historical scholarship on that song 🤔 EDIT: At 2:23 the date should be "1169" not "1196." Figured it would be hard for Henry II to launch an invasion after his death in 1189!

When land-hungry American settlers started settling in Mexican-owned Texas, Mexico let them; with the exception that slavery would be prohibited. It is because the Bengal famine was "mismanaged" in a very similar way to the Irish famine a century before. Right down to the specifics. Like how a man couldn't receive food relief in his own district, but was forced to walk to a neighbouring district. The idea being that he'd be dead before he got there. Or how international aid was blocked. They were very British genocides, where the brits, in all of their ignorance and arrogance, felt sure they would always control the narrative.

@@paulduffy4585 totally different the Famine of Bengal was wartime and a natural disaster. The Japanese invasion of Burma blocked major trade routes, the Japanese Submarines were operating in the Indian Ocean sinking 100,000s of tonnage mostly ships carrying wartime supplies. The weather reported cyclones, floods and other natural disasters at the time. Mismanaged yes totally but genocide no most defo not, as Britain needed India to hold the Japanese at bay. The Hunger was also mismanaged caused not by genocide but by the lack of admin from Westminster and also rich Irish Landowners exploiting the poor, also mismanagement of farms not modernising and keeping up with old traditions, and also the famous crop blight which destroyed the potato crops in northern Europe which was brought over from the Americas. Was Westminster at fault partly at fault for the Bengal, mostly for the Irish "Famine" because of arcane attitudes about Irish Catholics by some of the members of Parliament. But no genocide to both of them, just a tragic f$%k up and poor management

@@celticguy197531 you seriously missed the point. When two events, a century apart, are mismanaged in very similar ways, right down to sadistic specifics, it means that it is policy. The situations were exploited and exacerbated. Food was exported while people starved. Aid was turned away. Politicians made the same racist commentary. Crop failures were turned into humanitarian catastrophes. Don't be an apologist for an empire that brought death to millions. British policy in both these regions was historically genocidal in nature. These two events, when put in proper context, are chilling culminations of that policy.

The Black and Tans were a British paramilitary force during the Irish War of Independence. They were sent into Ireland to crush the Irish Republican Army and the fight for Irish freedom using "shock and awe" tactics. Many of them fought in WW1 and saw Ireland as the "wild west" were they were encouraged to do whatever they want. They are the most despised group of British soldiers in the history of Irish/British conflict. The burnt Cork city to the ground, shot numerous innocent civilians (including Eileen Quinn, a 24 year old mother of three who was seven months pregnant at the time). They raped women, tortured prisoners before executing them and got paid for it. They were called the Black and Tans because of their uniforms. They were technically part of the police force: Royal Irish Constabulary, and the British army simultaneously, so the uniforms were black (police) and tan (British army). The song mocks and ridicules them and states no matter how "brave" they were in other wars, the IRA defeated them. "Come out ye Black and Tans, come out and fight me like a man, Show your wife how you won medals down in Flanders, Tell her how the IRA made you run like hell away, From the green and lovely lanes of Killashandra." Recently Irish Taoiseach (Prime Minister) Leo Varadkar tried to create a ceremony commemorating the Black and Tans and RUC, in the spirit of "they weren't ALL bad". This has caused such fierce backlash, among other problems in Ireland, that a general election has been called, this resulted in the ceremony being cancelled, and "Come out Ye Black and Tans" by the Wolf Tones became a #1 single in Ireland and the UK!

Us Serbians have a great respect for the Irish people as we have also been oppressed by a greater power. The Foggy Dew song reminds me a lot of one of our song:“Od glave Zete, do grada Spuža” (From head of Uncle to the city of Spuz). Which was sung in protest to the ottomans. I believe two flags were raised over the GPO in 1916; one was the tricolour and the other was a green flag with a harp and the words 'Irish Republic' in gold/orange and white lettering on it. This (now tattered) 'Irish Republic' flag was captured by the British and was displayed in the Imperial War Museum in London for many years but was returned to Ireland in 1966 (the 50th anniversary of the uprising) and is now on display in the museum in Collins Barracks Dublin.

@@etherealhawk Yes, the old education system in the Republic taught a virulent Irish nationalism that was very anti-British in its outlook. This has changed now I believe. The Catholic Irish were oppressed by Britain for many years, but then again the working class in Britain, England, Scotland and Wales were also oppressed and mistreated too by the same powers that ran the Empire. I think the new generation in Ireland have a healthier more confident outlook on life without the need to look for oppressors or someone outside to blame.

I love how you just blitz through what I thought was interesting af. The fact that they got sent to Barbados 🇧🇧 a video on that and the history behind the Irish there would be cool.

Heres a video about surviving descendants in the Caribbean. It's weird to hear someone from there speaking in an Irish sounding accent, but when you actually think about it you can actually here a bit of Irish in most Caribbean accents and once you've heard it you can't unhear. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Jfip96k1cE0.html

From the time this song came out, it has been a favorite. Didn’t know it was Conor’s walk out song. Had only a superficial understanding of the meaning of the song. This is one of the best synopsis of the history of Ireland that I’ve watched in a long time. Clearly simply and well spoken. Thank you.

I think it's only misunderstood by those like aristocracy, fascism, or empires, especially if they are a member of aforementioned empire. I'm American, Im also black. The US has become what the British empire was for centuries and Americans will talk about all the bad things the British back in the day, but ignore that we are literally doing the same things right now. I'm not sure if it is due to a lack of awareness or education but it is hard to get people to see how we are the baddies now.
