Jake had a vision. It was his, the only real one he'd ever had, and he clung to it. It had always been the blues. Even back in the Rock Island City orphanage (that sweaty kid factory) Jake and Elwood were saved by the music. Actually, saved by a gray-haired janitor everybody called Curtis. He wore sinister midnight shades, a narrow black tie and a porkpie hat that he kept pushed back on his head. Curtis wrapped his waxy brown hands around his guitar neck and played the most dangerous blues this side of Robert Johnson. The nuns scorched the brothers’ days with holy threats and Curtis rescued them by night. Down in the coolness of his basement he taught them the blues and set in motion their mission: to live the healing message of music.
Silent Elwood never did put more than two sentences together, but all those lost words burned from his Special 20 blues harp. And Joliet tore that voice from some hidden darkness, twisting his chubby body, snarling at the heavens, a born sinner. They used the basement because it was secret and because the echo gave them a nice dirty sound: Howlin’ Wolf and Little Walker, slapping like a bad dream around the chilly room. And then one night, Jake brought in a gleaming E string he said came from Elmore James’ guitar. He held it tight and as it glowed in the bulb light, Jake sliced Elwood’s middle finger and then his own. Now the solo boys with soul in their blood were brothers. Jake and Elwood Blues … the Blues Brothers.

YOU ARE SO SO RIGHT, and sadly, others often don't understand that. My relative is a journalist who did a movie review when The Blues Brothers came out. She completely tore apart the film and brought our all of its weaknesses, but at the end of her review she told the readers that THEY HAD TO GO SEE THE FILM since it was so much fun and so remarkable and a great collection of incredible musical talents performing and just simply so silly and entertaining. Sure would LOVE it if John Candy were still with us. Same with John Belushi.

True story. Me and my younger watched this movie and loved it. Next thing I know James is at the police auction buying a used cop car. You know cop motor cop suspensions etc. We sure did raise some hell with those cars. We could get one for about 400 bucks so if we screwed one up we just sent it to the junk yard and bought another. Damn that was fun. I still watch the movie every year around the holidays.😊😊😊

The first time I watched this movie was in a hotel room in Colorado in 1993 with my grandma. We turned it on midway through and my grandma was laughing out loud at the car chase chaos. Later that summer when I was home in STL I was delighted to see that KPLR 11 was going to be airing it. I fired up the VCR, got an old Maxell tape that had something less desirable on it, and recorded the edited version. For years it was the only way I watched the film. It’s also how I introduced it to all of my friends. Wish I could watch it with my grandmother again. Or all of my friends as an elementary school student….. What a special film.

I was 12 years old when in 1980 I kept nagging my parents to allow me to go see a movie because Princess Leia was in. They allowed me to go see it on my own... And from the very opening notes of Matt "Guitar" Murphy droning that A# and the section coming in The Blues Brothers changed my life. I took a hammer to m piggy bank that very night and bought the soundtrack the next day. I took up guitar lessons a week after and to this day 40 years later I'm still playing the blues. So thank Carrie Fisher for taking that role, without her I'd have become a square.
