A friend did a test drive of the i7 only last week and was staggered how something so heavy can handle and drive so well....that is while riding so smooth and comfortably!

Mercedes EQs have been designed and engineered by people not worthy of the Star. First because they wanted to distinguish, in terms of design, their internal combustion engine cars from their BEVs, failing miserably because the design of the EQs is pitiful: how is it possible not to understand that an S class is a thousand times more attractive than an EQS ( which, in my opinion, is unwatchable)? Second, driving dynamics: even BMW is overtaking Mercedes, and this says a lot about who works at Mercedes. Wake up Mercedes, I don't recognize you anymore!

True. I wonder when car makers will realize the average person wants an E.V. to not look like a 13 year olds version of a future car. Style them attractively, give them good performance ( I think 400 hp is more than enough and would take extra range vs. extra horsepower) good build quality and good range and they'd have a winner.

i see people complian about the EQS design, yeah it might not be the most attractive EV out there but it has the best aerodynamic of any Comercial car ever made. the idear of that design was aerodynamic, yeah thats the point i think people should know much about something before the complain

@@elvismegabrain752 I've been a Mercedes customer for at least 30 years, so I know almost everything about Mercedes. Aerodynamics has nothing to do with ugliness, it's just the EQ concept that didn't work and the sales figures prove it...

Sat in one while getting the wife’s X3 serviced. At 6’2” I found it impossible to find a seat / steering wheel position where the screen was not partially obscured by the wheel. But, as a BMW fan I loved the interior.

BMW is really killing it on design and driving dynamics of their EV lineup. Still not a big fan of the nose of the new 7 series with the split headlights. I didn’t like it when Hyundai did it and I don’t like it here. Your new Camera setup is outstanding and a great improvement over your previous setup. Great review as always!

Motoman,I totally agree with you on the charging infrastructure. Something which BMW have promised will be addressed on the Neue Klasse platform. This i7 really trumps the EQS!

And I can't wait for that new EV only platform!! That will have a new iX3 on it which should be here for 2026/7. The current iX3 isn't coming to the US. It'll wait for the new platform for the US to get it. Plus, there will be an iX4 on it too (that currently isn't made which is strange since that shape is more conducive for EVs). They will also be built in the US. It'll be 800v and much better overall. It'll just be a few years.

The 11 kW on board charger can take advantage of a home EVSE at 40A or 50A. However a 101.7 kWh battery is not taking advantage of its size and should be configured at around 800VDC or like the Lucid Air at over 900VDC. The real advantage at these higher nominal voltages with a global vehicle is that in a market with an expansive road system it’s a better fit because you can recharge quicker and thus shortening extended trips or make busy weeks much less cumbersome in the form of charging. This comes because Level II chargers are current limited sometimes below the CCS limitation. Current multiplied by Voltage is power delivered. The higher the voltage the more stress taken off of current demands (or limitations) allowing for greater power delivery with the same or less current because charging losses are minimized. This takes the losses due to higher current by way of heat in the transfer of electrons off the table. All that, to say this: love that battery materials are sourced wisely but putting them in series and parallel to achieve double or more the nominal voltage is just a wise design choice and is critical moving forward. Genesis is advantaging the development in this regard because not everyone has a driver that has nothing better to do than hang around charging a thirsty beast. That does touch on efficiency a bit as 300 miles with 100+ kWh battery is really thirsty. There is homework to be done there no doubt. What’s a few more bucks in charging to an executive? No it’s how far can I be chauffeured before Jeeves has to delay my journey charging the vehicle again. Let’s just keep charging easily off the radar with a couple hundred miles added before brunch is over an Jeeves is at the door waiting on me (not the other way around).

All true, but 11 kW on-board charging is good but not class leading. 19.2 kW on-board charging is the current state of the art like in the Cadillac Lyriq 2WD (and it mystifies me why that charger is not available in the upcoming 4WD version). We're in a weird transition period where advances in electric charging technologies are coming but not all at once. The fact that Porsche is class leading with 800W architecture or Lucid with 900W architecture should not be a surprise. But the fact that Hyundai put 800W architecture in a car that sells in the low 50s is embarrassing to Mercedes, BMW, Audi, Cadillac, and everyone else (looking at you Tesla!) that didn't push this earlier as a class defining feature right now. Oh we'll get it eventually. But it should be now.

I can't say I understand what you mean when you say, "don't bother me with the facts. My mind is already made up." Conflict between minerals and metals have been discussed for years, and it's a known issue. It's especially known among progressive environmentalist types like myself. I mean, if you really care about having an apples-to-apples discussion about EVs vs ICEs, and which is really better for the environment, fine. It's still going to be EVs. All of the opposing views that I've had the displeasure of reading, or watching on RU-vid, they always come from people who don't understand the difference between a kWh and a kilowatt. Prager U, for example, loves using coal-generated electricity as an example, never renewable energy, never nuclear power, or even a mix of all types combined. They stick to coal, and compare the emissions per mile of an electric vehicle with the tailpipe emissions of a gasoline car. Being the cheeky asshole I am, I love asking the tough questions to people I see online who never share facts or data, but share memes with an EV charging, with a coal power plant in the background. I like the ask, "where does the energy come from to extract, refine, and transport oil?" I mean, if you're insistent* on implying the same things about electric vehicles being "not ready for prime time", fine. Let's have this discussion. Seriously. Where does the energy come from to extract the oil, pump it through a pipeline, refine it into gasoline, and the emissions tied to transportation from the refinery to the gas station? The *absolute* best-case scenario you'll see is, ironically, in Norway. Norway produces oil with emissions of only 7.5 kg of CO2 per barrel. Every other country is higher. 12 kg for the US, 14 kg for oil from Russia, 16 kg for oil in China, and a massive 39 kg per barrel from oil in Canada (where I'm from). My response to people who always ask open-ended bad-faith questions about EVs is, "let's just compare them. Apples-to-apples." Go right ahead and go as deep as you want comparing the emissions of EVs with the tailpipe emissions of ICE vehicles. While you're at it, go ahead and really dive into the emissions of oil production as well. And just to stay on-theme with what you said, "anyone who is telling you EVs are green and sustainable, now, or in the near, to medium, future..." just for that, I'd like to hear from you what you find in terms of true emissions from ICE cars and trucks with that of EVs. Forget using perfectly green electricity from renewable sources and nuclear power. You said it yourself. "anyone who is telling you EVs are green and sustainable now..." Use the average emissions from across the US. I don't give a crap. However, take an honest look at the emissions of the *entire* oil and gas supply chain, then apply that to the emissions per mile of whatever car you want. I know that was a lot, but I felt compelled to do this. I've been a fan of your channel for well over 10 years now. I find that people tend to fall down certain rabbit holes when they latch onto ideas that are populist in nature but not supported by the facts.

Battery weight: I had a cell phone in 1900 that weighed about 3lbs! I am confident that the engineers/scientists will get the size and weight of the batteries down significantly by the end of the decade.

800v charging architecture is fast IF you have access to them. Most people’s home charger is level 2. So it doesn’t matter what’s the max charging speed is. The other issue is increased battery degradation with high speed charging.

None of the EVs are really usable for long distance trips anyway (1000+ miles roundtrip), so the 200+KWH chargin rate/curve is not really a big deal as people are making out to be. Just have an ICE car for long distance trips and use the FREE high charge and Level 2 at home...simple. Even the EVs with the best charging rate are no match for my diesel ML 250 bluetec SUV that gets over 800 miles in highway. EV long distance is just way too expensive anyway, with all the hotels and restaurants needs due to ridiculous charging need every 2-3 hours ( where even the charging site ends up being 10-40 minutes off the highway) for even the highest charge rate EV. Basically, one can drive for 1600 miles with no more than 10 minutes of re-fuel in ICE. Just can't do that with EVs.

Mercedes already announced that they are most likely going to phase out the EQ brand. I never understood the EQ brand. Instead of just electrifying existing models they went and create a whole new subbrand.

It was the right approach, but Mercedes did not utilize any pros a dedicated EV platforms usually comes with, instead of making the car look somehow good and utilize the space an EV platform brings while using light weight materials, we got the joke of an EQE that has even less head room in the rear than a C-class, a much smaller trunk than the E-class and weighs more than the combustion S-class. The execution failed dramatically at Mercedes, EQE/EQS have no heat pump and although their EVs are build on a dedicated EV platform the EQS is build on the very same assembly line of the S-class and the EQE is build on the very same assembly line of the E-class & C-class...this means the EQE uses the same material mix as the E-class and C-class which is mainly steel, hence why the EQE is so extremely heavy and almost weighs as much as the bigger EQS, while the EQS uses much more Aluminium from the S-class material mix. Its an half-assed attempt together with the horrible design and practicality. They should have build a new dedicated production plant for their EV's so they could use light weight materials and have a frunk. Considering the way they handled the EQ lineup they should have just gone the BMW route and electrified their existing models, as that's how they treat their current EVs anyways. Whoever is in charge of the EQ lineup should be fired on the spot, together with their designers and im telling you this as a Mercedes owner and fan.

They aren't, though. With respect to cars, buses, and trucks, EVs are the panacea to climate change. Keep in mind, the same people who insist that EVs are worse for the environment than gasoline and diesel vehicles *always* lean on confirmation bias that comports with their existing beliefs, rather than just reading peer-reviewed facts and data about electric vehicles, the electricity grid, and grid generation. It's one thing to hate the wholesale EV takeover in the auto industry because you like ICEs. However, that's not fact-based thinking.

Good question! The 'delivery charge' or 'destination charge' is a bit of a misnomer. It is not delivering the car from the factory to the dealer. In many - but not all cases - it is the cost of bringing all the components together to assemble the car. Hence the wide range in these figures.

FACTS. China has very little lithium. The Chinese process ~90% of the world's battery grade lithium. The US energy grid gets cleaner every year. Where people buy the more electric vehicles the grid is cleaner. California and Washington have cleaner grids than Indiana and Kentucky. Tesla sources most of their cobalt from the Philippines. Tesla gets their nickel from Canada, Brazil, and Indonesia. Only Chinese made cars have their cobalt ,lithium, and nickel processed in China.

Good point, but it works as a catalyst in that process, so it isn't consumed. The volume of batteries need for scale EV production will create exponential demand for cobalt. The good news is a lot of newer battery compositions are substituting other materials for the cobalt. Battery tech is moving so fast this could change quickly. But much of the noise, is anti-EV agitprop from affected industries. The horse and buggy industry did the same thing when cars first showed up...nothing new here besides the tech. @@JohnFitzmaurice

The sad thing is, you people largely don't care about the social aspects of cobalt mining in the DRC. If you did, you people wouldn't be using it as a token issue just to make EVs look no better than gasoline and diesel cars and trucks. Come on. Face it.

Not to mention how these minerals are sourced and the child labor involved and lack of oversight. If we snapped our fingers tomorrow and all cars would be EV's how would we power those vehicles? What would be required from an electric charging infrastructure? Would that be safe for the environment? EV's to date are bait and switch marketing excercise!

@@davidgolfer In 2021, the entire global fleet of EVs and plug-in hybrids consumed a total of 50TWh of electricity. Quebec produced 212 TWh of electricity in 2019. Manitoba produced 33.9 TWh of electricity. Newfoundland and Labrador produced just over 40 TWh, BC produced just over 64TWh, Norway and Ontario each produced 159 TWh. I could go on and on. There is no shortage of electricity. If I asked you to provide evidence to prove what you believe, would you even be able to? I'd honestly like to see. So far, I've never seen any concrete facts from people like you. I mean, you'll say that EVs are worse for the environment than a gasoline car, but also say climate change isn't happening, all in the same sentence, which renders your initial point totally moot. I also went much further into detail addressing the misinformed comments made in the video. All you need to do is press "Cntrl F" to find what I wrote. The issue about labour violations in the DRC is, of course, serious, but it is solvable. Oil and gas production leads to *immeasurably* worse social conflicts, health consequences, environmental consequences, and leads to fossil fuel dependence. Don't throw stones by calling others stupid when you're the one relying on surface-level arguments. After all, you did just tokenize the DRC while ignoring the obvious benefits of electric vehicles and the problems of the fossil fuel sector.

I think he makes it clear that they are more sustainable over the long term but less sustainable over the short term. Gasoline is the opposite. It's sustainability life time has ran out and is unsustainable. Comparing the early and mid 1900's gas sustainability and today's EV's unsustainability just isn't fair because gasoline sustainability has long expired.

This is an SUV to me because it's so tall that it loses all classic sedan looks. This is about 100mm taller than the previous generation and the hood of this car is like 150mm higher than before. The silouette is now closer to something like a Rolls Royce but it doesn't sell it because the design looks so much cheaper and too angular and it has so many plastic toy looking design elements.

Merc generally has become a joke riding of the glory of its ancestors, history and legendary models from an era now long gone. Am 75 now and swore by mercedes for 40 yrs or so. Wouldn’t even look or consider anything else. Now cant believe that cant stand it. Wish they would just rename the brand to not taint its proud legacy

Motoman, the Benz EQS and Taycan GT are way better looking than this rolling LEGO block with a blue and white propeller emblem! 😄

Looks are objective and I would say this is better than the EQS the Taycan somehow I wouldn’t put in the same grouping.

I've recently over the past year become a fan of your channel. Watched one of your videos about a dozen times before making a particular purchase recently. I do find the politics that you bring to your car reviews unnecessary at times. I'm fine with you educating people about the sourcing of minerals for batteries in electric vehicles. Facts are indeed facts, and we should take these things in consideration if we truly want to do what is best for the environment and the world. It's good information. However, you lose me when you start talking about people "wanting your vote". Do you think people who strongly support ICE and the oil/gas industry folks don't also "want your vote"? I think more genuinely honest conversations about this topic would bring about a promising change for the future. But constantly bashing environmentalist, Democrats or liberals as the only group that are making claims for a "vote" is unnecessary and distracting to what would be an otherwise great video. Just my 2 cents obviously.

At 3:30 you're making an argument that leads to environmental perfection paralysis in that your argument while not wrong, any car isn't a sustainable choice whether it's EV or ICE, some choices are much better than others. In the life of a vehicle, over and over it has been show that the EV is generally the far better vehicle for the environment but when you make statements like yours, it feels like you're basically saying, if it's not perfect than why bother doing anything and in turn, people do nothing...paralysis. It's not a good thing.

This 7 series design is tried too hard ...not beautiful. The front design doesn't match with the overall profile ... But Merc EQ series design is a total is a total flop.

BMW's message to the citizens of our climate-stressed world: "Let them eat cake". The sourcing of the minerals is nothing but clickbait for those that would like to think this is an environmental wonder. Let's see, 7,000 pounds of metal and minerals to provide transportation for typically, one person makes it one of the LEAST efficient cars on the road. Really, with all their technological and marketing experience, where are the EV's for the other 99.99%? The first companies that deliver quality, full-featured EVs from 30K to 50K will dominate.

Agreed. This is the first video of his that I’ve seen, and it will be the last. He fancies himself as some sort of expert on EV and grid technology, when nothing could be further from the truth. As someone who has decades of experience actually operating the grid and helping to manage the transition to a cleaner one, I can say with 100% certainty that he doesn’t know what he’s talking about on that front.
