Hi there! I'm an idiot and here is my guide. This was requested about 2 weeks ago; sorry it took me so long to get around making it. Spent 2 days on it tried to give everything that I got as knowledge and pass it on to you! How this helps you survive over Europe as you bomb the Germans back to Berlin!

Great video. Great advice. Here are few additional tips and tricks. Sorry if I "overlap" any of your advice. Here are my 2 cents of tips: 1) Equip your gunners with best anti-flak gear. Heavy guns for the tail gunner + ammo belt. 2) Make your radio operator and your engineer fast and light. They are your "runners". Your engineer should fix broken systems, while your radio man's/girl's unofficial jobs are: first aid and fire fighting (inside the bomber). Give your radio operator the "First Aid" extra skill asap. 3) Give your pilot and navigator some good gear. But to protect them best, put armored plating on the cockpit of the plane, Don't move the pilot or navigator except if you have to. If your pilot gets killed, the engineer should be able to fly the bruished bird back to base. My engineer once flew the plane from take off to landing - without any trouble. 4) Get as many slots for first aid packs /fire extinguishers / parachutes as you can. Make it a priority to get at least two first aid packs and one fire extinguisher after one or two missions. Then a third first aid, then another fire extinguisher. No need for parachutes until your pilot get the "bail out" skill.

Yeah, there a few things that could have been done better in this video. This video basically shows everything I learned from playing the game and I wished I read up more about how an actual Lancaster Bomber Crew worked soI could of improved this video and my gameplay. I'll pin this comment for the new people watching since this video is becoming relevant again.

Personally I prefer the navigator to be my second "Runner". I just need them in the navigator's seat long enough to point me in the right direction. After that, I set them free. I give my Radio Op the second ability of navigator, and hop them back and forth as necessary.

The tail gunner had the shortest life expectancy of any crew member. Shut off in his turrret in the night, he often never even saw any of the other crew during a night mission and he was always cold. IRL the gunner worked moire like armed lookouts than gunners. When they spotted a German night fighter, they would fire a few burst at the fighter. While the hoped to hit the enemy, night visibility made it very hard to aim accurately. But as one former tail gunner put it: "We knew, that they [the German fighters] wanted a "sitting duck". By firing first, the German would usually withdraw into the night, hoping for a better, unalerted, target." In case of an emergency, if the intercom broke down, or if the tail gunner didn't respond, it was the radio operator's job to go back to the aft turret. Being alone in the tail turret was very dangerous as the gunner was a primary target for nightfighters. Take out the gunner, the strafe the bomber. If the tail gunner even saw another crew member, it would most likely be the radio operator (or wireless operator) coming to check on him. Sometimes to find the plug for the intercom has come unplugged, some times to find his comrade dead. Shot, frozen or even slowly choked to death if his air supply had been cut or stuck with frozen saliva. I read a book by a Danish man serving in the Canadian Airforce as a tail gunner on a Lancaster. He once passed out from lack of oxygen, and was saved in the nick of time. In 30 missions he shot down ONE German figher, a Me410. Otherwise he would scare of the fighter with fire, while instructing the pilot to "corkscrew left" or "right", to get out of the way of the fighter. His "duel" with the Me410 lasted a few seconds. The fighter came out of night at full speed, guns blazing. Such an attack was often a rookie mistake, and the first salvo overshot the Lancaster, giving the gunner times to fire straight into the enemy for 2 or 3 seconds. It was enough, and the Messerschmitt spiralled down in flames. His own plane, a Lancaster with the callsign "I for ITEM", was shot down with a new crew - just a few weeks after his and the rest of his crew had completed their 30th and last mission, andreturned to Canada.

Jesus, I knew it was bad for the bomber crew, but I feel sorry for the poor guy who had to be in the tail gunner. Reminds of the guy you got stuck in the ball turret of a B-17. It was considered a suicide role by American Airman. Both cases a real-life horror story.
@robynn144
@robynn144 6 лет назад
Yes, exactly. When you think about it; it must have been hell to sít in a tiny rear turret, alone, not knowing exactly where you are, but constantly staring into the total darkness. Looking, waiting for any shadow of a fighter. Waiting for a "ghostly", elusive but deadly enemy - a single round from a Me 210 or Ju 87 could kill instantly or turn your plane into a fireball.

Sometimes the German nightfighter would even follow a bomber back to base in England. Flying behind a beneath a British bomber at night, a German fighter could remain undetected for hours. Then when the bomber lined up for landing, lowered its landing gear and throttled down, the nightfighter pounce at the vulnerable, defenseless bomber as it landed. Just as the bomber crew allowed themselves to relax after hours of intense stress, a salvo of 20mm canon fire into the bombers fuel tank could end it all. I can strongly recommend a book called "A Thousand Shall Fall" by Murray Peden, who was a Canadian Stirling, and later B-17 bomber pilot during world war 2. He describes such an incidence, Just as he lands his damaged Stirling bomber, tracer round hit the runway just ahead the cockpit. A Junkers 87 has tailed him from the French cioast. Luckily the fighter misses, and is then chased of by the air base anti-air guns at each end of the runway -. put there for this very reason. This is just one of many close calls during his hectic tour of duty. Not to oversell the book, but Peden describes the intense life as a bomber pilot very well, and his book is considered one of the best of wartime literature.

German Night Fighters following all the way back to England? God damn, the Germans were bold. The British Radar system didn't help at night, and there were no Fighter Escort for bombers coming back home to England? Maybe I'm just asking stupid questions, but I'll look into that book you mentioned. All willing to read a good book about World War 2.
@robynn144
@robynn144 6 лет назад
No, you're right. Good questions. Sure, radar could pick up a German fighter. But as an former Navy radar operator I can tell you from experience, that even modern radar can only do so much. You get a "radar echo" whenever the radar waves hit SOMETHING - but is it friend or foe - or some sea gulls? You need visual confirmation to be sure, and after a raid, hundreds of friendly bombers would be returning to base. Night time bombing was very different from day time formation bombing,. Each night bomber flew alone, not in formation as it would be impossible at night. So escorting night bombers wasn't really practical. BUT there were British night fighters, such as De Havilland Mosquitos fitting with radar. Plus there were search lights and anti-air batteries. So yeah, it was very bold to follow a bomber back to base. But in war, everything's a calculated risk! To be fair, German nightfighter casualties were also HIGH.

Thanks for a great and informative video about a great game, "Bomber Crew". As everyone who has ever played the game KNOWS, is it get really hard sometimes and it seems borderline-impossible to save your precious crew and Lancaster! As you mention at the end, the game is based on luck. Which is fair, cause luck was a big factor in bomber crew survival IRL during WW2. Only about half of all British air crew completed a tour of duty, 30 missions. Anyway, thanks again for your advice. I'm sure it will be useful in a burning Lancaster bomber soon.

i gave my engineer the pilot role too for if the pilot gets knocked down, and boy was it worth it, entire crew down, all but my engineer, all had around 8 seconds left before they died and my engineer emergency landed in friendly territory like a CHAMP, also, when you lose the bomb bay doors and you dont have any more bombing targets, just drop it all, maybe you'll hit some flak

Great video, what I like to do is make the navigators second ability Engineer. When the engines catch on fire, he/she is a short walk over to extinguish them. That keeps the Engineer at his gun position. I make the Radio Operator a backup navigator so he/she can go back and forth between the navigators station and radio room. With the B-17 I make the Radio Operator a backup gunner and the Ball turret gunner a backup Radio Operator. When the RO gets serious wounds and is in sick bay the Ball Turret gunner jumps up into the Radio Room to keep an eye on the radar, he can even hit the auto tag when the German fighters pop up and climb back into the Ball Turret. I give the navigator back up first aid, that way he/she is close to the pilot and can heal him/her between fighter waves.

@ChiefSmackahoLLC
@ChiefSmackahoLLC 4 года назад
You gotta keep those gunners In flak vests and use the gunner "defend" power as soon as the ace starts focus firing on them. Also have the pilot change altitude or do the dive/corkscrew immediately when the ace starts shooting. The aces do have a randomized set of attacks, so once you figure out the best combination of counters to the attack you should be able to kill them without your gunners losing lots of health. I disagree that the game is so much based on luck, although it's a factor I think it's been balanced well enough that keeping cool, anticipating what's coming, and really learning the different powers, equipment options, and strategies can usually prevent an abort, or at least a crash.
@namelles2097
@namelles2097 2 года назад
you can try improving the turrets and giving the bomber missiles they do tons of damage and are impossible to avoid i recommend the 20mm since it does so much damage but only get one since the weight a lot also if you get the incendiary ammo combine that with focus, us all of this and chances are you don't even need to corkscrew(if you aren't that far in game try grinding a bit in low risk missions)

try giving the top gunner a 20mm with ammo feed or maybe increasing the armor plating and systems, that how i became an ace killing machine so maybe that works for you a swell also try grinding the low risk missions to get better gear and upgrades, one last thing make sure you never do a maneuver with someone on the outside and give the best protection to the pilot and gunners

Depending on your choices of equipment for the bomber and how you outfit the crew it's entirely possible to beat the campaign without ever leaving low altitude. The game is actually very well balanced and nearly every time I see someone having problems it's because they have made some assumptions about how things work and did not use all of the options available to prevent or mitigate the danger. It might seem overwhelmingly difficult but usually there's _something_ to do to keep the crew alive and the bomber intact. Edit: especially after the patches the game is more generous about providing upgraded parts and crew after late-game losses.

Descending increases fuel because you're in idle.... Not because of the lower altitude. You're also going down instead of across the ground. Bad tip
@slyfox43
@slyfox43 5 лет назад
All I said between 3:29 and 3:40 is descending (which is the act of moving downwards and working with gravity which builds up Kinetic energy) saves you an few extra minutes of fuel. No where did I say lower altitude is more fuel efficient because in real life there is more drag at lower altitude, but the only drag in the game comes from your landing gear being lowered or bomb bay doors open. Also the only time the bomber as at *idle speed* is on landing in this game; leaning and boosting has to do with fuel mixture, there is no throttle controls for engine thrust in bomber crew.

if you are missing a landing gear in the engineer station pump the fuel to the side with a wheel so when you crash(that's inevitable if your are missing a wheel) the plane wont blow up but most likely still fall apart with change of exploding but the explosion is already far from the crew(this saved my crew the only time i crashed
