The Bong Bridge - Driving over from Superior, WI to Duluth, MN 

This is the John A. Blatnik bridge, which is the Hwy 53 connection between Duluth and Superior. The Richard I. Bong bridge is couple miles west, serving as the Hwy 2 connection between Duluth and Superior.

Not only is this not the Bong Bridge, but the date is wrong in the description. The Bong Bridge actually opened on October 25, 1984. There is a huge misconception that it opened in 1985. Wikipedia even lists a 1985 opening date. The old Arrowhead Bridge closed to traffic in October 1984 before being dismantled over the winter of 1985. The Bong Bridge opened immediately after the Arrowhead Bridge was closed.

This is the Blatnik bridge driven many times to Soup Town for beer runs by 18 yr old Minnesota boys on Friday night in the 60s-70s to avoid the 21 yr old MN law. 😀

I always thoughtthe P38 at the Bong museum was the one he flew, but his plane was found only recently in New Guinea.

Been over it hundreds of times.

Who remembers the old bridge? Scary!

I don't mind driving a car over these bridges, but I get the hebie-jebies driving a semi over.

Is this the new bridge or the old one. if this gets torn down where is the new bridge?
