We're now halfway through The Book of Boba Fett with its fourth chapter, The Gathering Storm! I thought this episode was a little long and could have been paced better, but it also showed us some WILD stuff I never thought we'd get to see in Star Wars. So here is my full review!

I don't think Boba "forgot" how to fly his ship. The darn thing is flipped on its back, and the garage was too cramped to flip the ship up for better visibility. I thought that was quite clear in the show.

Loved how this episode stuck a balance with showing that “ruthless” persona people have of the character with the episode even directly addresses that topic. While still keeping true to his development he’s had in the series.

Even Fennec's line of "The sand people made you soft" addresses that, as if predictably.

I really like the pacing of this show. We don't need action and explosions and cameos all the time to make the story better. Watching Boba's journey after the sarlaac, being accepted by the tuskan tribe, tying up loose ends, and now building his own crime syndicate has been fascinating to watch. These first couple of episodes took the time to build a great foundation for the rest of the show going forward. Has it been perfect, absolutely not, but I see what John Favreau is trying to do with Boba's character and I love it. Also the little tease of Mando's score at the end of the episode made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. The next epsiode and beyond is going to be crazy.

I loved how the beak of the Sarlacc is 'retconned' to only come out occasionally, rather than being permanently positioned on top of the pit. Since the beak was added in the Special Edition and was not in the original cut of Return of the Jedi, there now is no contradiction between the theatrical cut and the Special Edition. Both can be canon, depending on what the viewer likes more. It totally leaves the door open for the theatrical cut to be released sometime in the future and fitting with the established canon, just as much as the Special Editions do. I noticed these kinds of little things regarding the Special Edition changes a few times now since Disney took over and I just love how respectful Lucasfilm is to all fans: Those who are theatrical cut purists and those who prefer the Special Edition and later additions.
@Tom-bn6pr
@Tom-bn6pr 2 года назад
Also, the shot when the sarlacc “burps” in the special edition has no beak present. So in fact, it’s actually ironing out an inconsistency for it to have a retractable beak

I love the passive aggressive criticism of this episode. I actually loved it and thought these flashbacks were necessary. Yes, it showed us things we already knew. However, what it actually did was explain Fennec’s loyalty to Boba. It explained why Boba wants to stop hunting but be his own boss. Everyone wondered about his motivation to take over Jabba’s palace. I think this episode explains why. This “book” is about Boba Fett so to me the flashbacks and the present day stuff is necessary to turn this 2D character into a 3D character. We need to see who he is and who he becomes. If they wanted a crime syndicate series then, sure, stay in the present.

I think that the second round against the Sarlacc it is very important by putting Boba Fett in the same situation that left him in the verge of death during Return of the Jedi. Both situations actually occur under identical conditions, with Fett confronting the beast armored behind a shield from his family heirloom, be it the armor or his father's ship. The difference is that this time he is not alone, and it is the first bonds of the tribe that he is building (starting with Fennec Shand) that allow him to emerge victorious where years ago he barely managed to survive. He even went through the entire Sarlacc like some kind of Dagobah cave of his own, that he has learned to master completely. Regarding Black Krrrsantan, he only tears off one of the Trandoshan's arms and pays the rest in cash, which seems to me to be an interesting form of characterization, indicating that he is someone who maintains a kind of balance between his most personal and visceral vision, and the most professional with great respect for the economic rules of the business

Hearing you talk about that George Lucas quote reminded me of two things from the main saga. Anakin's line in the prequels about the galaxy not helping each other, and then lines in the TRoS: "They win by making you think you're alone" and Lando telling Poe that they defeated the Empire because, "We had each other."
@pacman5698
@pacman5698 2 года назад
I didn't like RoS and thought it threw out so much of what TLJ did, BUT I will admit, one of the few times IX did seem to respect what VIII did was placing emphasis on solidarity and the idea the every person coming together and banded is the only thing that can stop evil. Poe's speech that Zorii inspired and his exchange with Lando after Leia dies are great. I think it's very easy to imagine an Episode IX where Johnson's changes are mostly kept in tact (Rey Nobody, no Palpatine, no Final Order, light and dark coming together, stoic Luke, and Kylo going mad) where both of those scenes exist still in tact.

I think this was the episode I enjoyed the most, to be honest. I think the second one is where I'd place the criticism against pacing and heavy-handed flashbacks. I think you're worried a bit too much about pacing: extra time spent on any given scene or fleshing out the details of info we may already have a basic knowledge of is one of the great luxuries we're afforded in this being an episodic series rather than a 2-hour film. I admit the speeder chase last week was very slow, but that's a different issue that has to do with action sequence directing/editing, not storytelling which is what we're dealing with here. Maybe I'm more patient with such things because I'm a fan of older films/TV which were similarly paced? Possibly. Anyway, I thought this episode was great and I really enjoyed it. One thought about the end: yes, it was Din Djarin's theme that was played when Boba mentioned getting more muscle - and it would make sense for Djarin to go work for someone like Boba for awhile after giving up Grogu until we're presented with a reason for Djarin to go get him again in the next season of Mando (I'm making obvious assumptions here). But wouldn't it also be great if Boba's not thinking of Din Djarin specifically, but of all Mandalorians? Maybe Jabba's former palace could be come a new Mandalorian refuge!
@TheOmegazerox
@TheOmegazerox 2 года назад
George made Starwars about stories and charecters from the beging. The pacing and charecter development with flashbacks is much closer to the classics. I have heard severall complaints about bad writing and ruining Boba's charecter in this show. You want bad rwiting? Look at the sequels. And what's rwong with Boba's charecter here? He is trying to do things diferent. Fenecc sed the sand people made him soft. Boba sed they made him strong. I agree. This has not ruinned his charecter. He oneley apeared in two movies. Four if we count the prequels and young Boba. So his charecter is not obvious. Some people oneley know of him in movies and maby some books and video games. His charecter is hardley as knowne as Luke' Liea or Han. i even have no problem with his eu charecter developing to this. If you still disagree with the show stop watching it and go finde a show you enjoy.

I gotta say, yeah he doesn’t NEED the armor. But that armor isn’t just his crutch or old self. Mandalorian showed how it’s a legacy, his fathers, and that he wants to honor that. It’s his by right. It’s very much a “if you’re nothing without it” kind of thing which I know has been thrown around. But that armor is important in more than just a “I need it to be tough”, it carries with it a legacy that Boba and others care about. Especially has he goes on this journey of building a new crime organization and maybe something more. Some Star Wars Legends vibes there too.

Cause he said: "Help me get my Firespray gunship" if he had called it by it's actual name, then it would've sounded a bit weird. "Help me get my Slave 1" the name does sound off in that context, so context in which he said it I guess makes sense. Maybe it rules out them meeting and working together directly, but he knew who she was and she knew who he was. I don't see why they can't show up in the same scene in Bad Batch, maybe something like the OT scene with Boba and the other bounty hunters reporting to Vader.

I think we could see a cool scene of Boba preparing to kill Vanth for the armor before Din arrives and they start working with the Tusken Raiders. Also, if Vanth does show up, there could be some interesting conflict between Fett building a crime family and how the people of Mos Pelgo are raising a Huttlet to take over.

I've never cared much about jedi or lightsabers that's why these shows are so fleshing but they still fit into the world even the goofy cheesy jokes felt very much like old school OT trilogy gags. The rabbit droid thing reminded me of the rabbit you have to chase in Mario 64

If you accept that the "flashback" stuff is of equal value to the "present day" scenes then the pacing is just fine. If you see the flashback scenes as somehow something to be endured then, yes, I can see why someone would be frustrated. Luckily for me I am not one of those people. I loved this episode. Pretty good outing. Amused that this is going the Trek movie way so far of odd entries eh, even entries good. Hoping this isn’t the case for Chapter 5, considering what a certain musical motif by the end indicated. So far I’d rank it 2>4>1>3. My only negative with episode is that I felt that the infiltration of Jabba’s palace for his ship went a little too long. Everything else was solid.

Why does Boba say “take it from a bounty hunter, don’t worn for scug holes.” Why would he specify that he’s a bounty hunter to krsantan? Sounds like they forgot about their meeting in the comics. Also, I don’t think the Nikto striders killed the village. Fennec acts shocked when he tells her what happened, I think it was another tribe of sand people that killed bobas tribe.
@Scrapluv
@Scrapluv 2 года назад
I thought he said "former bounty hunter", which was telling Krsantan that he was his own man.
@goten339
@goten339 2 года назад
he actually said "take it from an ex-bounty hunter", he's specifying that he's out the game and might have some wisdom to offer Krsantan who just got abandoned by his employer. I don't think they've forgotten or even retconned the comics at all, I think the way Boba and Krsantan's interactions are happening in the show, it allows for the best of both worlds. People who haven't read the comics and aren't aware of Krsantan outside this show can see their interactions as reasonable, Boba only knows this giant Wookiee as an immediate threat that he's dealing with by showing him respect and giving wisdom, the same was a boss in a company might try impart wisdom on someone lower down in the workchain even if they don't have a personal relationship. People who have read them can see their relationship as more layered, they've worked closely together a few years ago, probably have, or have had similar viewpoints and life experiences, but just like with Fennec, Boba is trying to convince this bounty hunter and there's more to life, they can be more than tools who get discarded, they're on opposite sides now yet Boba is reaching out with respect. And I like your idea that it was other sand people, might play into the subtheme of "when you try change what you are and try change the world around you, the world will react negatively". I like Boba as a crime lord, but maybe him learning that he's only doing more harm than good with convince him to take his future endeavours off-world. Getting increasingly tired of Tatooine

Mod subculture could explain why Starwars has cyborgs but we have never seen much of them. They are a subculture, probably looked down upon by regular people.

Its Legends now, but I recall one character, a former Imperial fighter pilot, from a highborn family, who lost his leg in combat. He's actually ashamed of his prosthetic leg when another character discovers it and he explains that in the core worlds, Cyborgs are looked down on. It makes sense to me that The Mods, are rejecting those Core Worlds attitudes, not only getting cybernetics, but making them obvious, taking pride on their modifications.

This episode was a vast improvement. I wanted Black Krrsantan on Boba’s side and now he is. I like that they’re finally hinting at recruiting other bounty hunters into Boba’s army opening up the door to Cad Bane, Bossk, Aurra, IG-88 maybe. And I love how they show why Boba wants to take the place of the Hutts, because he knows bounty hunters make better rulers cause they’re smarter and tougher than regular crime lords.

Spot on about the tribe commentary. It reminded me of Obi-Wans line to Maul in Rebels "If you define yourself by your ability to take life, then you have nothing.".
