For me personally, this story is about love and how it manifests over time and connections. How inseparable and unending it is, even after death. And how even though people may not be blood related, they are still family. Honestly, this is one of my favorite books of all time, up there with The Giver.

The purpose of books change throughout this story. In the beginning, books are about knowledge and a means to enter the world through reading (since she can't read). Books later become a bonding tool between the girl and the mayor's wife. Then, books become the tool for revenge as the girl is mad at the mayor's wife. And at the end, books become a means of escape (writing in her book literally saves her life).

Books can also be more human-like, as in all humans are like books that can be opened, left untouched, stolen, or destroyed. In essence, Death is the Book Thief in this scenario and does whatever it wants, as we are the books.

extra bits of information in case you are wondering: - why did Hans Hubermann start playing the accordian? -> During world war I, his war friend that saved his life and who we later find out is Max's father, taught him to play the accordian. - the ending -> Liesel is the only survivor as all of the people, including the Hubermann's and Rudy are killed when the town gets bombed one night. Then, she is raised by the mayor and his wife and grows up to have a family of her own in the end. - death as the narrator of the story -> is what defines the characters of the book and readers are introduced to them through series of events that involve death and suffering. -> personification of death raises the message to all from an omnipresent perspective, that all of us must face death and we are all on its schedule. also reminds readers about how we should choose kindness over cruelty in all times :)

I believe it is because it is told from death's pov and not of Liesel's. This is just a daily occurrence for him unlike being the "End of the world" for Liesel.

I read it a few months ago and I thought the same. Now we had a school assignment to write a report about a book and I chose to reread this one. Just to tell you, I am crying soo hard right now, as I finished reading the book a few minutes ago. I think that is because when I started reading, I already knew that everyone would be dead, so I noticed every small action they had, and the relationship Liseil had with them, so when I reached the end, I could understand exactly how Lieseil felt at that moment and It was heartbreaking. I really recommend rereading this! And I think this was the perfect choice for my assignment, just that it is a little too long ( about 600 pages )

What is the role of "stealing" in the history of the book? I mean, the book is called "The Book Thief". So, is there any consequences of this action on the characters or maybe it is an symbology about the power of death, which can take anyone at any time without warning?

Personally for me, The story is about words, power of words in the face of oppression and war. As the story unfolds, words become the means of resistance towards nazi, where max uses words to depict the resistance in the basement. also the words take a different shape when used by the nazi where the hate speech fuels the war. Liesel's love for reading which brings her comfort and hope. And Hans and liesel bond over the words.

That's such a good analogy, since we live and create our own histories. We may live and learn the experiences of our parents and even our grandparents. Thats great, cause the movie was garbage, it describes itself as a celebration of the human spirit. Its not celebrating the characters, its celebrating the audience who just lost their wills to live by the end of the 2.5 hour run time. Hope the book was at least mildly interesting(also this 5 minute summary could probably be shortened to a 5 second ad, and lose zero important plot points. Hope the book was enjoyable.
