The Bookcase is a friendly independent bookshop situated in the village of Lowdham, approximately 8 miles north of Nottingham, and is normally well known for its programme of author events. The arrival of Covid-19 in the spring of 2020 meant that live events had to be cancelled, and so we have been looking at other ways of keeping in touch with our lovely customers. We decided to produce a series of online interviews and talks, filmed at The Bookcase.
This video features Kadiatu Kanneh-Mason who the mother of the famous family of musicians - the Kanneh-Masons, speaking about her book "The House of Music". Julian Lloyd Webber described the book as "A unique and fascinating account of how day-to-day life works in an extraordinary household".
Seven brothers and sisters. All of them classically trained musicians. One was Young Musician of the Year and performed for the royal family. The eldest has released her first album, showcasing the works of Clara Schumann. These siblings don’t come from the rarefied environment of elite music schools, but from a state comprehensive in Nottingham. How did they do it?
Their mother, Kadiatu Kanneh-Mason, speaks about what it takes to raise a musical family in a Britain divided by class and race. What comes out is a beautiful and heartrending memoir of the power of determination, camaraderie and a lot of hard work.
If you would like to hear about more talks in this series look on our website at www.thebookcase... or contact janestreeter@thebookcase.co.uk to go on our mailing list. There is no charge for our online events but if you wish to donate to our supported charity, Nottinghamshire Hospice, it would be very much appreciated. nottinghamshir...
