Hi, I'm Bob, and I read this magnum opus by Olga Tokarczuk.
I had some challenges in reading it, but I'm keen to hear how everyone else got on with it!

Really interesting discussion! I'm the type of reader who reads a lot but retains very little 🙈 I also struggle with lots of characters so I can understand the frustration of wishing you knew who they are!

Thank you! Haha, yes! So glad it’s not just me! I admire people who can deal with complex books like that, but I think I’m finding my limitations 😂

I just bought this book today, and I am feeling super scared and excited to read it!

Aha, all the best with it! Don’t let my struggles with it put you off, I know lots of people have loved it!

I'm 300 pages in and i absolutely love it. The Sabateans and the subsequent Frankist movement, Eastern Europe's Jews, the Ottoman Balkans, Smyrna and Greece... I love it!

Totally understand your feelings Bob even though I enjoyed it much more. I read it over two months with a friend so I think that really helped, I wanted to keep reading and was thinking about the story when I wasn’t. If I was more familiar with Polish names I’d have got on better as I did get confused who was who and who they were related to and thank goodness I was reading the ebook so could easily look up a lot of the Jewish customs and forms! I found the character of Jacob fascinating- if pretty unlikable and some of the women and Father Chmielowski were far more appealing. I think you’re right that it slows down in the middle and the timeline dancing around also got a bit frustrating as I’d get lost but her writing is so good and the amount of research is phenomenal. I think that’s why I lot of people admire rather than love this book.

Ahh, it sounds like the slower reading experience would have been better for this one! I would love to do that in future and properly experience it! And yes! I found Jacob as a character fascinating too! And your point about admiration vs love is spot on! Regardless of my struggles with the book, I’ve got to take my hat off to Tokarczuk- what an achievement of a book!

I’ve read Flights and Drive Your Plough & loved both. The only reason I haven’t read The Books of Jacob is the size. It’s very intimidating.

Jacqueline, I loved Tokarczuk’s earlier books and absolutely adored The Books of Jacob. Long books intimidate me too, but then I find it’s so nice to get sunk into another world for an extended period.

I can’t wait to read Flights! And I like staying in one world for a while, but I think I got lost so early without realising!

Same here on Flights and Drive Your Plow, especially Drive Your Plow, but I can't connect with TBOJ and I'm not one who's intimidated or turned off by big books in general. It's a slog for me and I'm only listening to it. I'll finish it because it's Olga, and it's clearly a major accomplishment on her part, but I think lack the knowledge, experiences and interests necessary for TBOJ to resonate with me as a reader.

I enjoyed hearing your reflections on yourself as a reader-that’s not pretentious. There’s a lot about reading and writing within the novel, which is one of the many aspects I enjoyed. Also, it makes sense that you kept imagining the setting as medieval, because the story portrayed the dark shadows cast by the Enlightenment.

Thank you so much! And yes, I found those passages really interesting!

All of the things you are describing I sometimes felt with this, but also felt with wolf hall. I think that is also a lot about a complex historical fiction of a place and a time we know little about. A lot more people effortlessly enjoyed Wolf Hall because the English history is much more well known in this corner of Booktube. That does not mean that we should research everything, that cuts the flow for me, but if we keep reading more Eastern European literature and then come back at this, it would make much more of an impact.

I also found the reading experience similar to the one I had with Wolf Hall. Very enjoyable, perhaps because I also have a little familiarity with Eastern European cultures, on account of my family background & travels.

Wolf Hall is a great comparison! I struggled with Wolf Hall, but had enough knowledge of the period to kind of just bounce through, so I guess I would have done better with BoJ if I’d had a bit more knowledge- so I think you’re right! Maybe I just need to read more around the area

Thank you for this post. I recently started reading The Books Of Jacob. I loved Drive Your Plough and also enjoyed The Flights, but this one is a bit daunting. I don't think it is just the length. There is a lot to learn and absorb. I decided to take a break after Part I and I read The High House in a well-spent day. Thank you for that recommendation! Tomorrow, refreshed, I'll go back to Jacob: The Book of Sand. ONward!

Perhaps I'm effectively splitting it into 7 parts, as I gather you split the Septology into 3 [even though that, too, sounds as though it ought to be in 7! ;^) ] PS I don't think we have to call our own fouls while reading. It's not that sort of sport. That said, knowing that a reader with your insight, dedication, and appreciation of books still has moments of WHA'? does encourage me to turn the next page. Then another. One more ... and I find I've re-engaged. Go you!

Ahhh, thank you so much! Yeah, definitely! Drive Your Plough suits me a little better because I love stories largely focused around one character and their inner worlds, so BoJ was a lot for me at times. I think taking a break might have been a better idea for me! Ooh, glad you enjoyed The High House! And thank you- that’s very kind of you to say! I think that largely hit me because I could tell the book was well done, but I just couldn’t find a proper route through it. But yes, I think splitting it into 7 would have made sense too!

Um, it’s not you, it’s the book! I love the kindness and generosity of your review, but it was so much more convoluted than it needed to be. Kudos to you for sticking with it! (I couldn’t.) That’s such a great accomplishment.

I'm so intrigued by this book. I don't usually read books that are so long, but this one might be worth it. I feel like I might have some of the same problems as you, but that wouldn't keep me from reading it.

Ooh yes! And yes, I love it when books are like that. I’m still glad I read it, even despite my challenges with it, which I think speaks to how intriguing it is.

I had a very similar experience to you. It is without a doubt beautifully written, but so dense and while I did have some favourite passages and characters it still felt like a slog and the overall experience was similar to getting through a university assignment. I'd like to say I plan to re read it now that I have a better context of everything, but let's face it I probably won't. I would like to try some other Tokarczuk books though.

Yes, I think that was my difficulty with it- I could tell it was well done and researched, but I just couldn’t connect for whatever reason. I feel the same about re-reading it. I know I’d get a lot more out of it on a second read, but it’s a big task! I really enjoyed Drive Your Plough by her, and I hear that Flights is many people’s favourite!

Oh no, I have just bought it (finally), I've been intimidated by it since it came out here in Poland in 2014 LOL I hope I get to read it this year because I like that there is hype around it but man, it's just so big... I've only read Drive your plough which I really enjoyed :) She is having a new (much shorter) book coming out in Polish in June, which is really exciting and I want to read it when it comes out BUT... it looks like it's much inspired by Mann's The Magic Mountain and that is another intimidating read haha. So, I'm planning to read The Magic Mountain in May, we'll see how it goes :P

Ahh, sorry! 😂 I think that’s the thing with books like that- I’ve almost finished the Fosse Septology, and that’s probably only a little shorter in page numbers, but because it’s split over 3 books, I haven’t really noticed! Ooh, that new book sounds exciting, but yes, The Magic Mountain is a huge one too!

Pronouncing it right, at least according to the audiobook. It’s too bad it didn’t work too well. That was like me with Don Quixote. I didn’t like reading it particularly and some moments worked, but what it was mostly was a slog.

Thank you! And that’s fair- I had the opposite with DQ, which I found really fun and silly.

I preordered Books of Jakob on Audible. After three attempts and never making it past 20%, I sent it to the DNF pile. My problems with this book are threefold: (1) It is written at such a remove that I couldn’t engage with it; (2) I often don’t like books with an organized religion element; and (3) it read too much like a folktale. Agreeing with you Bob, there’s nothing wrong with the book, it’s just not for me. The only International Booker candidate I read was Heaven and it was fabulous!

Ahh, totally fair! Yeah, sometimes it just doesn’t work for you, and I’m trying to make peace with that! I think having watched friends adore it, and watching it be so critically loved, warped my ability to step back and realize it just wasn’t for me! Heaven was a wild ride!

listening to you for sometime now i have to disagree with your analysis of yourself as a reader who takes in everything and lets it flow back out...you constantly extract and retain plenty which you share with us. i think it was pretty clever of tokarczuk to pass the job of clarity unto the reader and off her shoulders...i find those four categories simplistic.

Thank you- that’s very kind of you to say! It’s a big book, and I’m sure I’ll find another book to delve into soon that makes me feel a bit more like I’m getting it! And yes, good point- she does pass that on to us a little!
