Sam Hunt, descendant of pioneers on the Boone's Lick Road talks about when Missouri was "the frontier" and takes us to the historic Salt Lake once owned by Nathan and Daniel Morgan Boone.
The Oregon-California Trails Association is the pre-eminent guardian and promoter of the inspirational story of the 19th century westward migration, which is unique in world history. Our mission is to protect the Historic Emigrant Trails legacy by promoting research, education, preservation activities and public awareness of the trails, and to work with others to promote these causes.

In St Charles, MO today and traveled the old Boons Lick Road. I believe that the paved road that we travel today was built on the old native trail. I try hard to imagine what it looked like during Daniel Boone’s time and before. Thank you so much 😊

Hi, my family came to Boone County, MO in 1821 via the Booneslick. Thanks for this comment!

Again an interesting video.👍 It brought back some good memories. I have traveled in the area along the Missouri River between St. Louis (MO) and Jefferson City (MO), two times (2017 and 2019). I recommend to visit Daniel Boone's Historic Home in Defiance (MO) while you are in that area.

Excellent video. I assume you are related to Richard, the man behind the camera? The topic "Where did the West begin" has been discussed for many years and seems everyone has a different answer. Some of the more popular answers are: Lewis and Clark, Texas Revolution, and War Between the States (proper name is War of the Rebellion). If I may ask, why do you think this was where it all started?

Yes Richard is my Dad. I am an OCTA member and he talked me into doing this one as well as another at Arrow Rock. As you note, the "frontier" continually shifted west. My format was to ask the question "Where did the West Begin" and then connecting to my ancestors, noted that in 1821 the west could definately be central Missouri as it came into the Union. Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment!

@@octatrails Thanks for the reply. The "WEST" started soon as the immigrants stepped off the boat onto the Atlantic coast and headed west into the interior of our country. Where I am from in Georgia, in its early days was labeled the "Great Southwest." Our organization deals with the history of the "Wild West" which I think started in south Texas. Others have different times and locations. The migrations west (OCTA) fall into that period of the Wild West. Keep up the good work!

I seen a metal detecting video where the guys found all kinds of relics and valuable coins along the Oregon trail. Where people no doubt died from everything and lost it. I would have thought this is a part of history that's being exploited by treasure seekers. Just like civil war relics I guess.

We strongly disapprove of "treasure hunting." That isn't how you preserve history, and it's also highly illegal on public lands. Leave it for the next person to enjoy it.
