On this episode, Rands is joined by L Scott Johnson... or LSJ as he is known to "Vampire: The Eternal Struggle" players around the world.
LSJ is an instrumental figure in the history of VtES & here we explore his journey from a self-proclaimed “rulemonger” on early USENET groups to ambassador of the game to becoming its lead designer when the CCG was published by White Wolf Publishing.
So retire to your crypt, draw the shades & sink your teeth into this trip back through Vampire: The Eternal Struggle’s past.

I very rarely comment on RU-vid videos, but this is something special! LSJ is absolutely an inspirational person and game designer to me -- he demonstrated the value of precision and consistency, and approached his job with patience and persistence. While I don't remember specific anecdotes, I know for sure that I've asked him many, many questions, which he always generously answered. Those "dark days" of not getting official answers from White Wolf were problematic for the community, and he understood the value of consistency and a shared ruleset. He also showed me the necessity of the game designer having an answer to how the game works -- the buck stopped with him, and he knew it. He was willing to take responsibility for making the game work, which can be a daunting task, but he did it well. Thanks for making a good game so much better with your stewardship, LSJ!

LSJ was a pleasure to speak to & very generous with his time/memories for this episode. I had long heard about his stewardship of VtES &, was always impressed how, as you mention, he allowed himself to be the "face" of the game. It was great he kept a presence in the community, something quite rare for that era. He was one of the very first people I thought of when I conceived of this podcast series.

42:00 Regarding Hunters aka. Imbued. For those who are not familiar with the background material Hunters are based on the White Wolf RPG Hunter the Reckoning which also belongs to the same World of Darkness as Vampire the Masquerade. A sister game in the same universe.

I think it was the Lucita promos (prior to Sabbat War?) that were cut weird--maybe the corner radius was off?

There were some Wakes also that were given as promotional handouts at the time of Black Hand that were shorter. I still have some somewhere.

33:15 Indeed. 3rd Edition's backs were flipped. The color of green might've been a little different as well.

51:35 "Correct!" :D :D (A little background for those who have not been along for an eternity... back in the olden days LSJ as the rulesmonger used to give _extremely_ short answers to the rules questions at the Yahoo Groups. Some might say even infuriatingly short ones... "Correct" was probably the most used IIRC. Disclaimer: I didn't really follow the Yahoo Groups back then.)

Didn't the license with WotC (for the game mechanics which WotC owned) ending also play a part in the White Wolf decision to stop publishing VTES? (Also, I've heard that when WotC originally dropped the game, Ryan Dancey's personal dislike of the game and its theme was a big (?) factor. And guess who was working at the White Wolf/CCP at the time when White Wolf dropped the game? So he apparently got to kill the game twice... :/ )
