The border wall at the beach

While in San Diego, I took the opportunity to check out the border wall. There is an old State Park called Border Field that is rarely used anymore. I wanted to photograph where the border wall goes into the water but didn't expect to film a video. Once I saw how eerie and creepy it was there, I started to record on my phone. Glad I did! Had a friendly encounter with the U.S. border patrol and everything.

Years ago this was a functioning park and beach with a parking area right near where the wall hits the sea. Sewage pollution from Mexico made it unusable. Two fun facts: there is (or was) a little round toe hole intentionally built into the fence so that people from both sides could "set foot" in the other country without going through customs. Also, the wall used to stop at the water's edge. B P would quietly watch to make sure nobody stepped back onto dry land on the wrong side, but they didn't bother anybody otherwise. Oh. And there was some kind of little monument marking friendship, length of the border, blah blah blah. Simpler times. A lost world

Great video! I happen to live over on the other side of that "wall". And even though I understand your "weird feeling of two different worlds" separated by a wall, Tijuana is not that bad. We have a very prosperous city were two cultures mix in harmony. Mexicans living in the States, and Americans living in Tijuana. For us living o a border city, it's kinda natural to make friends, business, entertain and enjoy both countries. It's like having the best of both worlds. I simply love living in this privileged bi-cultural land. Kudos for your video!

It's funny you mentioned Berlin. I lived in W Berlin 1973-75. My husband at the time was an Army MP that worked a lot of historical places the most being Checkpoint Charlie. I went to bring him dinner there one day and I also got to look out of a 2 or 3 story window across the Wall at an E Berlin guard up in a tower with a machine gun type of gun (I don't know guns) looking very seriously at me. I was a good looking 17 or 18 yr old girl and I was smiling and kinda waving a little at him. When I looked back at him through my binoculars he had his gun up with a very stern look on his face. He was young but his job wasn't anything but serious. All along the wall there were gun towers with armed men with binoculars ready to shoot if anyone tried to get too close to the dead zone around the East side of the wall. I've got a lot of historical photographs in the 2 1/2 years I was there. We even traveled to the East in our car through Checkpoint Charlie (without my baby just in case)once. It was such a huge relief to get back to the West. So, short story long I can empathize with your creepy feeling. Just stay safe. I love your videos.!

I was in Berlin 73-74, US Army Berlin Brigade. What a city! Your hubby was at a different barracks, I was at Mc Nair Kaserne. Did you ever go to Club 50? I went on a tour to East Berlin, and saw Hitlers Bunker. The whole east of Berlin was grey and drab, while the west was bright and alive! I drove a tank, and we would point the cannon at the border guards and watch them panic! Such fun, and I sure miss my buddies

Berlin was very creepy in the 70s and 80s. I was there in 1980 as a child with my Mom visiting some relatives in West Berlin. We went to see the wall at the Brandenburg gate, Checkpoint Charlie etc and there were these observation towers in the West where you could overlook the death strip to the other side. I second your story although they didn't have guns anymore pointing at us, just binoculars but they did watch every of our movements. My parents though went there in the 60s and there was one underground station that was now the East but the rest of them and the whole line were West. The underground went through the staion but did not stop and in the 60s the dim lit station was filled with soldiers side by side who stood there pointing their machine guns at theWestern passengers in the underground cars. My Mom told me that she felt horrible going slowly through that station in the car at gunpoint. German people pointing their guns at Germans. Weird. Germans could also not to cross the border to the East via Checkpoint Charlie. Every other nation except Germans were allowed to cross there. I don't know why but I've seen newer movies where this happens. Wrong.

The water is indeed from the Tijuana River. The mud cracks in interesting pieces. People often ride horses on the beach at Border Field. Sometimes crossing between countries during low tide. Most of the tire tracks you see are most likely Border Patrol. I've stood at the fence and talked to people in Mexico with what little Spanish I know. They've always been very friendly. The BP really doesn't like it these days; sometimes you can get a friendly BP agent; sometimes if you have a camera they get cranky. It's how you treat them - if you're respectful they will be too. It is a very strange place. It's the same planet but there's such a division in such a small area. I've been to the US border with Canada in several places - also a completely different experience.
@johnmarks714
@johnmarks714 5 лет назад
Id love to see you do a canadian border video, two especially recommended stops is the Northwest Angle and the Haskell Free Library. NA was the result of a century's old surveying error and HFL was deliberately built right on the border line around 1908. You don't even need a passport to go there and the border line is marked inside.

Interesting! A long time ago, there was barely a fence there at all. A few old posts with 1 length of barb wire stopped 20 feet short of the waterline. Although, that was around 1963. Things have changed since then.

I guess I’m used to this place after living here half my life. I like the video but had to laugh at the music and the element of creepiness you added to it. Lol. It’s totally fine here at Borderfield State Park. No real danger. However, you’re correct in the agents will stop you to make sure you’re a citizen. They’ve only been doing this the past 15 years. They never bothered anyone before that. In terms of those washed out areas filled with trash? You’re walking through a bed of contaminated shit water 😂That’s the overflow of the Tijuana River which outsources the city’s sewage. Yes. They shit, piss, dump their trash into the river and it flows directly into our side of the Pacific. Want a cleaner, closer view? Wanna touch the fence and the experience to your bucket list? Go over to the TJ side. Clean (they don’t shit where the eat). And no one will bother you (they don’t give a damn who is in or tries to escape their country).

very cool video. interesting how the wall does not go very far into the water I would guess that especially at low tide you could probably still walk around the end of it as the water is probably not very deep. I wonder why they did not want you to get near the wall? I think it would have been cool to go up there and stick your hand or foot through it to say you actually touched Mexican soil.

That is not the "wall" you hear about. That's a fence built during the Bush/early Obama era. As for swimming or boating around, that is what the Coast Guard and border patrol are for.
@tynkabell9972
@tynkabell9972 5 лет назад
cwtrex sorry I didn’t mean Trumps wall I did mean the fence in this vid! It doesn’t seem to go very far out to sea so technically what’s to stop someone, at night, holding on to the posts and swim or dive around it? Also looking at Google Earth of the border, there seem to be loads of crossing places inland, crossing the Rio Grande so why don’t Mexicans try to cross the river, rather than amass at the Tijuana border crossing?
@cwtrex
@cwtrex 5 лет назад
Coast Guard and border patrol. Also, not discussed much, but both of those groups not only use personnel to watch the gaps, but also utilized multiple technologies for detection as well. As for Mexicans, they are by far from the only ones to cross. The recent caravan was made up of multiple countries south of Mexico. I think a good point that does not seem to be mentioned by either political party is that a good bi-partisan solution to the border would be Trump's wall + processing centers at the delegated entrances. In theory, that would make safer places for those seeking to immigrate due to refugee needs, etc. I assume that safer than the Rio Grande is the reason for Tijuana since it is a town with supplies and services, etc.
@tynkabell9972
@tynkabell9972 5 лет назад
cwtrex thanks for your swift reply. I do have sympathy for genuine asylum seekers, fleeing from tyranny, war, famine etc, but a lot of the current ones are simply economic migrants. Genuine migrants have to claim asylum in the first “safe” country they come to, so this would probably be Italy, but vast numbers of fit young men want to come to the UK because of our generous benefits system. Stay in your own countries and help to rebuild and create your own wealth and benefit all. Europe cannot take in most of the worlds poorest.
@cwtrex
@cwtrex 5 лет назад
We in the US do not get a lot of info about how EU is handling their own migration issues. Thank you for your input on this. I do have to say that my own research tends to suggest that these large migrations cannot continue to be supported economically. Of course, you don't want to say no to migration either. I think the problem with the media in the US and perhaps else where is that none seem to point to middle of the road common sense. It is either this side wants none, and this side wants them all, but never a serious discussion about the benefits and disadvantages for various circumstances.

Despite all her faults and shortcomings, I love America for what she stands for: Freedom, Liberty and Justice for All. I am not an American nor would I change my nationality to become an American ...I worked and lived in America (WDC) for a number of years. It is a real pity that Mexico, despite her Resources keeps her population poor and wretched. Why cannot this border be like Canada and the United States America? The rubbish at beach is typical careless users of the beach ...Americans appear to be very proud of their country, but somehow, they really do not care much for their poor people and their environment. In Europe, we are not wealthy but we try to keep house a little tidy ...
