THIS MOVIE RULED!!! What a fun time with a great suspense, Borg driven plot and a lighter comedic subplot to balance it all out! Incredible effects, makeup, design, and acting made for one of my favourite Star Trek films! The Borg Queen as well as insanely cool! What do you guys think of this one!? Thanks for watching! Have a great day! :)

I'm surprised First Contact got any unfavorable comments. It's generally considered to be one of the best of all Trek films. Usually Star Trek 2 is considered the best and First Contact is either second or third after Star Trek 4.

First Contact had a few references to Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager, such as Worf on the USS Defiant, and the Emergency Medical Hologram in sick bay. For more context, when First Contact came out in 1996, DS9 was in it's 4th season, and Voyager was in it's 2nd season.

I don't know why anyone hates this movie, for my money it's the best Star Trek movie of them all. Remember, we found out in this movie that the queen was on the Borg cube in Best of Both Worlds, and that ship was destroyed, so she died there. Her death only affected the local Borg.
@noneya3635
@noneya3635 Год назад
Just a suggestion, maybe watch the over use of the word "hate" when talking about negative reviews. Some people just feel nothing for a thing and point out the reasons they didn't love or even like a thing. That's not hate, that's being critical. And despite what the internet and twitter tries to tell the human race, it's actually okay to disagree wish others and not enjoy something that they do. Even when the they is a larger portion of the commenters than those who don't. Hate is overrated, overused and misused in the youtube sphere.

This is my favorite Star Trek movie. There’s a few references to ST episodes you might not catch if you haven’t seen them: - The Emergency Medical Hologram is a main character from Star Trek Voyager - Lt. Reg Barclay makes a cameo; he is a fan favorite TNG character with social anxiety who appeared in a few eps - Data refers to his only previous sexual encounter, which happened with Lt. Yar in the third episode of TNG, “The Naked Now” (right after “Encounter at Farpoint”) - Ethan Philips, who stars on ST Voyager, cameos in the holographic nightclub

Jonathan Frakes took advantage of the “directors course” at Paramount studios. Back in the day, Paramount had courses that allowed actors to learn how to direct. Give them the opportunity to direct more than a few episodes. LeVar Burton who plays Geordi also directed a lot of episodes of TNG, voyager, and enterprise. Some Voyager actors became pretty well-known TV directors as well. Even Patrick Stewart got to direct an episode of TNG! Jonathan Frakes has definitely become one of the most known television directors in the past three decades. He’s got a couple of feature films to his name. Not to mention he’s also directing and will continue to direct episodes of the new Star Trek.

Many cast members directed episodes of Trek after Frakes. Incidently, had the original Star Trek been renewed for a fourth season, William Shatner would have been the first to direct an episode as he was slated to direct the season four premier of the original series. The show was not renewed and he didn't make his directorial debut until 1983 directing an episode of his series at the time: T.J. Hooker. Jonathan Frakes directed eight episodes of TNG, three episodes of Deep Space Nine, three episodes of Voyager, and has since directed seven episodes of Discovery and six of Picard. Sir Patrick directed five episodes of TNG. LeVar Burton directed two episodes of TNG, ten episodes of Deep Space Nine, eight episodes of Voyager, and nine episodes of Enterprise. Gates McFadden directed one episode of TNG. Michael Dorn directed three episodes of Deep Space Nine and one episode of Enterprise. Avery Brooks (DS9's Sisko) directed nine episodes of Deep Space Nine. Rene Auberjonois (DS9's Odo) directed eight episodes of Deep Space Nine. Alexander Siddig (DS9's Bashir) directed two episodes of Deep Space Nine. Andrew Robinson (DS9's Garak) directed one episode of Deep Space Nine and two episodes of Voyager. Robert Duncan McNeill (VOY's Paris) directed four episodes of Voyager and four episodes of Enterprise. Roxann Dawson (VOY's Torres) directed two episodes of Voyager and ten episodes of Enterprise. Robert Picardo (VOY's EMH) directed two episodes of Voyager. Tim Russ (VOY's Tuvok) directed one episode of Voyager.

Back in 1996 I had the tremendously unique pleasure to watch First Contact at a very special pre-premier screening with just Star Trek fans! Every single time a famous name was shown in the opening credits the entire theater was on fire with cheers & applauds! And when Picard breaks the spine of the Borg Queen at the end it was a standing ovation! I have been to some premiers in my lifetime but when it comes to energy & every single person in the theater truly being engaged, focus & 100% involved & loving every second, nothing beats First Contact! Safe to say, this is my absolute fav Star Trek film still to date & I doubt that will ever change. What I also personally enjoy very much about First Contact is that it symbolically is a mix between Return of the Jedi & Aliens, my two fav films of all time, put together into ST: TNG! No wonder this works for me. And why ROTJ & Aliens? The Borg Queen trying to lure Data over is very similar to what Emperor Palpatine is up to with the Dark Side & Data is kind of both Luke & Vader in this film & Picard is definitely Luke. And it was Data that pulls the Borg Queen to her death, just as Vader tosses Palpatine to his death. The Borg Queen did not see this betrayal coming from Data, nor did Palpatine see Vader's! "hint hint" And Aliens? Heck, the Borg are the kid friendly version of the Xenomorphs in my book. They are drones, all they do is multiply, they live in a hive, they love heat, they sleep in walls, they are lead by a queen. And if they ever get their hands on you, you are F-ed (with few exceptions). And Frakes filmed this very similar to an Alien movie, dark corridors, lots of red lights, they just keep coming no matter how much you fight & shoot. And, again, they now have a queen! Surprise! Once Star Trek went more like SW it just got so much better, & still holding on to its own thing. The space battle in the beginning, for many, many years that was the only space battle in anything that could even get close to the space battle in, yep, ROTJ! What is also very nice to know is that the TNG cast themselves are very, very happy themselves with First Contact. Brent Spiner is for sure. And, despite his fear of heights, he did make that long fall himself, even if he was on wires obviously. He hated it but he still did it. King!

I always loved how the enterprise sort of emerges from the nebula like a curtain is being pulled back. I’m convinced that the first contact theme is Jerry Goldsmith’s greatest work. The scene with Picard in a white suit and a tommy gun taking out a horde of Borg is just amazing visually. I like how this movie feels like a game, in a good way. It’s almost like there are different levels and objectives they have to achieve along the way. At the beginning of the film, when Picard is in his ready room listening to extremely loud music… I didn’t realize until much later that the poor guy was already hearing the call of the Borg in that scene and had the music cranked up high so he didn’t have to hear it anymore. It’s a small little touch of trauma that isn’t even apparent on first watching the movie.

I would have thought it was because I saw _TNG_ as my first experience of _Star Trek._ But that's not the case for you. Then maybe it's because you hear it every time you watch the show, which is many times. Or maybe that, other than _TMP,_ in the other movies (scored by Goldsmith), it's only heard in the end credits. 39:51 Jonathan Frakes directed 8 episodes of _TNG._ Of course, I'm pretty sure directing a movie is on a whole different level.

Funnily, this movie makes a lot of references to Moby Dick, as did coincidentally Star Trek 2. But two years later from First Contact, Patrick Stewart went on to actually play the role of Ahab in a two-episode mini-series adaptation of Moby Dick. Jerry Goldsmith also was busy with The Ghost and the Darkness while this film was being made, so around half of the score was actually composed by his son Joel, their duties mostly divided with Jerry doing the big set pieces and Joel doing the more atmospheric Borg stuff outside of the Warp Drive Test music.

*HI ollie! This movies overall story arc seems to explore two themes:* First, PTSD - the idea of the trauma of being a victim of loss of identity and individuality, being robbed from somebody, having a resulting traumatic affect on someone long after the event. Picard is a pacifist and man that always did good by, and for, people. To steal that away from him was similar to being an abuse victim. Then there's the revenge that fills and overwhelms you to the point that you will stop at nothing, with pure rage, to hurt the person that put you in that position. His portrayal is very accurate and in some cases didn't even need words to convey this. Great acting. Second, imposter syndrome. The idea that Cochrane got elevated by others in such a way that he doubted himself. Agin, very accurate portrayal

This was the last Trek-Film to use mostly Miniatures for the Effects. There was a lot of CGI already (all Starfleet Ships in the Opening Battle except the Enterprise-E were computer animated) but almost all shots of the Borg Ships, the Enterprise and (I think) the Phoenix were done with models. And these Effects have aged like a very fine wine. And not to take away any credit from Jerry Goldsmith, he did write most of the Score as well as all of the Themes but because he was under sort of a time crunch, he enlisted the Help of his son Joel (who was an accomplished composer himself) to write about 25 Minutes of Score. The Opening Dream-Sequence, the 39.1 Celsius-Scene, the Corridor Shootout and most of the final Confrontation with the Borg Queen, that was all Joels' work.

"I am the beginning, the end, the one who is many. I am the Borg." - The Borg Queen, 2063 (Star Trek: First Contact) The Borg Queen was the name given to the entity that existed within and served as a central nexus for the Borg Collective. Her name was coined by the Federation scientists Magnus and Erin Hansen, who discovered her existence. (VOY: "Dark Frontier") There were multiple Borg Queens, although they appeared to share a personality. (Star Trek: First Contact; VOY: "Dark Frontier", "Unimatrix Zero", "Unimatrix Zero, Part II", "Endgame") As of the 2380s, at least some Borg cubes contained a queencell, which in turn contained a spatial trajector reserved for the Queen in the event of an emergency. (PIC: "The Impossible Box") In 2401, an atypical version of the Borg Queen beckoned Jean-Luc Picard to a region of space, where she expressed the desire to join the Federation. This Queen was originally from an alternate timeline and had merged with Dr. Agnes Jurati in 2024. (PIC: "The Star Gazer", "Penance", "Mercy", "Farewell") memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Borg_Queen

We met Zephram Cochrane in the original series. 100% a guy. First Contact with the Vulcans led to Earth exploring interstellar space using Cochrane's warp drive. Those adventures are in Star Trek: Enterprise. WWIII led to United Earth. United Earth names its space exploration agency "Starfleet," confusing a helluva lot of fans watching Star Trek: Enterprise (set ten years prior founding the Federation in 2161.) Lily opened fire at Picard & Data because they were just attacked by one of the surviving enemy factions; & now there are intruders in the top secret silo. (They built Phoenix from an unused missile.) Worf was in command of the Defiant, the starship assigned to DS9. See episodes of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. We are very far from "the end of the cubes," considering that Borg space is in the Delta Quadrant, where the Borg concentration of Cubes, Tactical Cubes, Scout Ships, Spheres; & Unimatrix Zero One is located. Watch Star Trek: Voyager. The Borg are like cells in a single organism. Like antibodies, they ignore foreign bodies that pose no threat. All Drones are expendable. The Mind is vaster than any one Cube or any single Queen/spokes Drone. (Again, for Borg details, see ST: Voyager. Mid series, the ship liberates a Drone, who becomes an important member of the crew.) Also, the Queen isn't Species 01, who were presumably called the Borg. Pure coincidence with English. She's the same assimilated species as the Queen Captain Janeway contends with in ST: Voyager. The Borg are a conglomeration of assimilated species. By the season of Voyager when they encounter Borg space (a year or so in the future from these events), the Borg are having "a little trouble" assimilating Species 8472, meaning there are members of at least eight thousand, four hundred & seventy one species who are now Borg Drones.

So alot of people don't like the way Cochran was portrayed in the movie versus what the historical lore told us about him ahead of time. But the thing that people often forget is history books have a habit of romanticizing historical figures, particularly ones that were important to the founding of a nation or anyone that caused any kind of great change that was considered to be good. The real people were usually nothing like that. One example is Mark Twain, one of the most famous authors of all time. He was always romanticized by history books because of his contributions to literature. The real man was abrasive, rude and he often got on people's nerves. He once said to write for free for a year, and then if you're not noticed, go back to chopping wood, because it means that's all you were intended for.

I've gotta say, I'm in agreement with you on your Star Trek movie reactions. I remember when this movie came out, me and some college pals went to see it opening night. We got to the theatre, got our popcorn, received some free blueprints of the Phoenix and we were thorough entertained. I love it when Star Trek has these three things: 1. Thought provoking ideas; 2. Thrilling action; 3. Jokes where the Trek franchise pokes it's own bubble and makes fun of itself. There were some great follow-ups to this film, as well: --there was a spinoff that aired on TV from 2002-2005, called, Enterprise, which showed the first joint deep space mission between humans and Vulcans on the first Starship equipped with warp drive. It polarized audiences but I thought it was a fun show. The cherry on top was Scott Bakula starring as Captain Archer. --speaking of Enterprise, there were even a couple of sequel episodes. One was "Regeneration" where a couple of Borg who had been ejected from the explosion of the Borg Sphere were found in the North Pole. Once they were awakened they stole a ship adapted it and headed toward the Delta Quadrant to join up with the rest of the Borg. There was a scene where Archer mentions to his crew that Dr. Zephram Cochrane once spoke about encountering cybernetic zombies during his warp flight launch. --one of my fave episodes of Enterprise was a two-parter, called, "In A Mirror, Darkly", which begins with how the evil version of First Contact happened in the Mirror Universe. (Once you start watching more Star Trek, you'll probably find that some of the funnest episodes are the ones which take place in the Mirror Universe!)

As far as the Borg. They do come back as a major player in Star Trek Voyager. As well in Picard the Borg are a major part of the story including showing how the queen may have escaped in Best of Both Worlds. The Vulcan at the end who meets Cochrane whole not fully cannon the writers indicated that he was actually Spocks Grandfather. Jonathan Frakes has directed more Star Trek than any other director and has a very extensive directing career. In First Contact he earned the nickname two-takes Frakes for getting the scenes in two takes
@toddsmitts

This was my favorite Trek film. I've heard the writers describe it as a story where "Star Trek" itself is at stake, and described the Vulcan meeting as the "Star Trek nativity scene". Apparently, the original idea was that Cochrane would be injured and Picard rallied the townsfolk to work to assemble the Phoenix, while Riker led the fight against the Bord on the Enterprise. No one was really happy with that script, and Patrick Stewart asked why he wasn't on his ship, so they just swapped Picard and Riker. If you look closely, during the Starfleet battle with the Borg ship, the film introduced four new starship designs (Not counting the Enterprise-E and the Defiant), as well as several ships from past shows and films. There was a company in the UK that made some terrific models, including pretty much all the ships from this film. I was lucky to collect them all. ;)
