Man I love your Metal Gear Devious Intent videos. thank you very much for your work. Every once in a while I come back to this videos as I hold dearly this saga of video games and love the deep characters.
Kojima was pretty tired of making MGS games and konami breathing on his neck at that point I guess so he just came out with a female younger and more sexy version of the end 😂
contardation Only real heroes kill innocent SEALS, takes child soldiers for his own selfish ends, and murders a mother because she inconveniences him and takes a sick pleasure in murdering her.
Bc she followed her mission to the very end knowing the end was going to result in her death. And yet she embraced it with no hesitation. Wat a woman...
The boss actually made me furious at lawful good black and white characters. She taught me conflict, people, and reasoning was more complicated than that. There is no eternal enemy or Ally. It's sad but it's the truth.
Seriously though despite the fact that the Boss is known as the Joy and her lover is called the Sorrow, she always has a grim look on her face and he is always smiling. Inside joke lol?
Good timing. Just started playing the Legacy collection that I've had sitting on my shelf for over a year. Just finished this game up. Definitely the best playing game in the series so far and I enjoyed it much more than 2. The Boss was a highlight of the game. On to MG4!
I was expecting for you to cover her "participation" in Peace Walker, about how in the end she just wanted the world at peace and to just sing a song. Still, great video!
Vinícius Carvalho me too. Although that was an AI, not really her herself. Everyone seems to hate PW's ending but I think it really shows the boss' vision of the world.
Based on some of his twitter posts he seems to just unfairly dismiss anything after 4 and MPO because "they all suck lol" and probably never even finished PW.
I clicked this video to save this and watch it later and accidentally watched the whole thing. Holy shit. MGS3 was the first and so far the only game I ever had cried for, it seems dorky just acknowledging it but it's true and I think just goes to show how good it is. 'Love MGS, man.
The relation between The Boss, Snake, Ocelot, EVA and Volgin is so goddamn good! Every scene with more than two of them puts most of today's Hollywood movies to shame. The plot of this game and its scenes are such a pleasure to watch. And without being overly convoluted! 20:15 This scene. This fucking scene. My favorite scene in any video game to date. You can see Snake's disapointment and bitterness in his eyes.
I though I played each of the games in the main series. it never felt like a stealth game series since a majority of the characters acknowledge Snake's identity and at the same time attempt to be cinematic. Then for me to consider that one guy was able to take on a Metal Gear. While another pleb named Raiden takes on at lest 10 Metal Gear Rays. It seems that the series actively attempt to completely undermine its own selling point with the franchise. I know the games can be played at higher difficulties but the nature of the series is still marred of the boss fights and the active need for the characters have long winded monologues with each other. Not a series that I think deserves a stealth title but a decent one.
Sons of Liberty makes the point that its entire premise is a carefully orchestrated reenactment of the Shadow Moses incident, ala the VR missions, meant to mold people like Raiden into soldiers like Snake. It's set up in such a way that Raiden was meant to win, along with the fact that he was also a child solder trained by Solidus. Big Boss was aided by the likes of Ocelot and EVA during his mission, with intel from the CIA, not to mention the Boss herself. He was meant to succeed, and he certainly didn't do it alone.
I wish she revealed her real name. All we have is her code names, The Boss and The Joy. It would have been that more touching if she told snake her real name in her monologue.
It's one of the hidden snake eyes moments; there are RB/R1 prompts during some cutscenes that let you see from Snake's point of view, but this one and some others don't have any prompts. I don't recall exactly when this one comes up but it is during the award ceremony.
The best game in the series for sure. She was the best part of it. I may not be a fan of this series, but at least I can give credit where it's due. I'm still hoping on that Devious Intent on Trip from Enslaved. "Protagonist" my ass, she was an antagonist who got away with everything.
Whenever someone tells me videos games can't get emotion from people or video games can't have great stories (yes there are still people like that...even in my highschool) I tell them to look into the Metal Gear franchise (along with others but MG is my go to)
I didn't see the boss (the joy) as a legitimately good person, perhaps in snakes eyes, she was.. being named the joy after the joy she felt in battle while killing doesn't that make her the worst kind of murderer?
ONE THING U GOT WRONG IS THEY WERE LOVERS KOJIMA EVEN SAID THEY WERE , AND HERES HOW I KNOW THEY DEVELOPED CQC TOGETHER YET EVERY TIME THEY FOUGHT HE HELD BACK BECAUSE HE LOVED HER SHE ALWAYS SMILED AND TOOK ADVANTAGE OF IT, ALSO IF THEY DEVELOPED CQC TOGETHER FOR WHAT 5 OR 9 YEARS THATS ALOT OF GRABBING EACH OTHER SOMETHINGS GOT TO GIVE, THERES NO WAY HE SAW HER AS A MOM! U WOULD HAVE TO BE STUPID TO THINK THAT PLUS AGAIN KOJIMA SAID THEY WERE LOVERS LOOK IT UP, BUT EVERYTHING ELSE WAS SPOT ON,
Even though this video is a few years old, it's a good one! The Boss is the one Metal Gear character that I have the most curious about. It's a pity that Hideo Kojima had a falling out with Konami because he had an interest in making a game centered around The Boss. It would have answered a lot of questions. What is her real name? Where is she from? Who trained her to be the bad ass that she was in MGS3? How did she, or better yet, they come up with the alias "The Boss" and why?. So many unanswered questions. This video gets a huge thumbs up!!
I like how MGS3 and The Boss basically serve as a way to turn everything you know about the franchise around. Suddenly you're not sure of who the good guys are. And then the story of Big Boss continues and it is revealed how the Patriots came to be and why Big Boss tried to rebel against them. By the ending of MGS4 you realize that perhaps you've been playing as a pawn of the "bad" guys all along, that the real heroes were Big Boss and Ocelot. Man... I'll miss MGS, one of the greatest pieces of art, videogames or not, that man has seen. I seriously hope Kojima, now with full creative freedom, manages to create something as great if not better with Death Stranding.
@@NichtNameee In MGS1 and 2 I'm pretty sure they are doing exactly what the patriots want them to do. They thought they were acting against them, but nope.
Ocelot was the real hero 😄 edit : he was the only one that understands the boss wish for the world, a very tragic hero TBH. When I realized this it blew my mind.
Jose Colella That's not really Big Boss. Also, for those that think it's necessary to refer about Venom since it was Boss's plan... Man, waiting that long for your decoy to get back up is ridiculous even for MGS. And Kojima sanctioned Nanomachines. SON!
One thing that always stung me was how when the game makes you shoot The Boss, you might not have it in you to do it, so the game takes control away from you and does it itself as if to take mercy on you and say, "I know it's hard, I'm sorry, but this has to happen."
Not sure if you're into Tekken, but Heihachi Mishima might make an interesting subject with the amount of history the character has had across 7 games.
Not at all. Peace Walker showed Snakes decent. This video doesn't touch on those events at all. And so what it explained was just some vague fan fiction that only exists in your head.
You definitely didn't pay attention ... The end of peace Walker expalins EXACTLY what big boss mindset was to eventually becoming the "villan" He was broken after snake eater But in peace Walker he takes action to becoming and building a mercenary group, making war a buissness and fighting for his own ideals and own missions. The phantom pain shows big boss/venom plan in making the war economy come together That is what made big boss the antagonist in other games. He and Zero ruined the world by going extreme routes trying to unify it
@@ElliotKeaton true, but MSF layed the ground work down and pretty much influenced how other should look. I actually find it funny they made the online portion of Phantom pain feed into the war economy by stealing and raiding bases for supplies and gmp, which would make sense in that world
I love this series, and thank you for detailing The Boss' reasoning for all that she did. I knew there was more to it than I could remember, and you summed it all well. Keep up the fantastic work!
I like how you just sort of barely acknowledge the retroactive stuff MGS4 did with The Boss and stuck to her character and motivations from MGS3. Although an Uncharted 3-style exploration of the narrative jank in the MGS4 villains would be an interesting round-out to this Metal Gear Solid D.I. marathon. - Lewis
I like how you left out information from the later games. Really staying true to the "history" this game was designed with. Great video as always. You're one of the best RU-vidrs in my Opinion and your videos have brought me much joy and the Yakuza series! So, I just want to express my Gratitude at this point. Thank you and see you on your next video! :)
I CANNOT TELL YOU HOW MUCH I LOVE THE PAIN! "TAKE THIS!" Shut up, at least my favourite boss isn't Running Man from Metal Gear from the MSX days... but it is Kojima's, actually.
5:45 minor point but it's a myth that people with one eye don't have depth perception. Maybe it's slightly impaired but it's not like you lose it entirely. Case in point: there was an NHL hockey player named Bryan Berard who essentially had his eye poked out by a stick and was still able to play at a professional level.
8:08 well, there are still the facility just before fightimg ocelot, the facility where we could have killed the End before the batle, where we found Grannin, and I dont think all those soldiers are dead by the end of the game.
the first time I played MGS3 or MG Origins to be exact.... back in 2004/2005 right when I got to the final part where you beat The Boss and she hands you her Patriot and tells you to kill her.... I stood there for a good 5 minutes.... I didn't even press R1 at all or the fire button. I just stood there as the music played on and the meadow grass and flowers swayed. I was thinking maybe if I don't shoot her, she could be saved. But as she said "There can only be on Boss" Because of the US Government using Jack (Big Boss) and forcing him to kill his best friend in existence...... He would slowly become the villian as time progressed. I am guessing that no-one really understood the Boss's mission at all. They all tried to copy it and fullfill it.... but most of them failed. In reality the Boss wanted a world of peace, where people wouldn't have to kill eachother and where love can exist. The Boss truly was the hero of Metal Gear period.
I like how pretty much everyone connected to the field of operation for Snake Eater is a double agent. Even though The Boss had respectable and unshakable loyalty, I can't help but to think that her faith was misplaced. All her work is doing is promote war profiteering through the Philosophers. It's easy to see how anyone else would grow to reject the ludicrous orders handed to them after being treated like a disposable handkerchief for decades.
The boss is amazing and I can semi-understand her goals and motivations, honestly I wholeheartedly think that her goal (acquiring the Philosophers legacy for the American philosophers in order to make the world whole) is EXTREMELY foolish.
If you had been in my place back then... maybe you wouldn't have made the same mistakes that I did. Ever since the day I killed The Boss... With my own hands... I... Was already dead. Boss... You were right. It's not about changing the world. It's about doing our best to leave the world... the way it is. It's about respecting the will of others... And believing in your own. Isn't that... What you fought for? At last... I understand the meaning behind what you did.- Big Boss's last words.
Amazing how older Naked Snake/Big Boss ended up so similar to the Boss. Guess the Boss was right after all: "One must die and one must live. No victory, no defeat. The survivor will carry on the fight. It is our destiny... The one who survives will inherit the title of Boss. And the one who inherits the title of Boss will face an existence of endless battle."
17:38 Here's something that was thankfully removed from the game. In-game voice files of The Boss heavily imply that that scene was to include an aiming mechanic, and you could mess up the killshot as she would tell you to "do it right this time".
