as a survivor of abuse, I would love to say this will end ......but I don't hold out much hope but I'm glad there are people like this out there putting a spotlight on it

If I can give this movie 10 stars, I would!!!! WONDERFUL film, just got the chance to finally watch it this morning. Probably one of the most deserving Oscars in 2016 that they had in a very, very long time.

I grew up in Boston's parochial schools from 1961 thruough 1973. Father Mahan was the priest in charge of us altar boys, the older guys called him Father Mahandjob, I didn't even know what that meant. They knew about these guys, and, let them ply the evil trade.

I'm not Catholic never have been. god bless you for exposing & uncovering this filthy simmering story of sexual crimes against children committed by priests. I wasn't victimized but am seethingly angry at the scandal. i understand Boston is very strongly influenced by the Catholic Church. i was distracted by September 11th and never read your stories but i would love to. you are true heroes for having done this.

Came here after watching Spotlight for the second time. Great people, and a great film. Minor bit of negativity - I wish there wasn't always music soaring in the background whilst these people spoke. It's not necessary and is a bit offputting.

And still the RC church in Ireland is trying to halt the investigation. Spotlight a great movie.

I don't know how much have I been re-watch Spotlight, it gave me a mood booster to do a good job. I'm not a journalist, but I wanted to be one when in high school. That or a script writer. Now I'm working as a content marketing in short film industry, one of my 'child' is a special articles called 'Spotlight' that giving a voice to short filmmakers here in Indonesia. Btw, we name the section way before I even know about this great team or watched the film 😂. So for me, Spotlight is the best film that portrayed the real life of investigation journalist. I might will never be like them, but watching this video give me an inspiring thought of how amazing the impact of journalism. We need more journalist like this, especially in this era where hoax and fake news are spreading fast like a fire in the forest. Very much respect for what are they doing until now!!

"We answer to a higher authority" That's a quote from a Bishop speaking on Irish radio when these scandals first emerged in Ireland in the 1990's. They believed they were not subject to the laws of the land, they believed they were above all that..but it didn't take them long to hide behind those same laws in order to protect the wealth and power they had enjoyed for so long. The Church imploded in Ireland, today less than 20% of the Irish attend church or have any relationship with it. In 2018 only two priests were ordained in Ireland, a county that would normally produce hundreds of them.

When JPII was cannonized, Many victims felt like it was a slap in the face. He broght Law to rome to escape justice. He gave his friend Marciel Maciel a slap on the wrist and ignored the scandal. Some "saint" he was.

I saw the film when it was released and I've seen it 4 times since. The story is intriguing and the commitment, skill and energy of the Spotlight team is hugely impressive. That they made an incredible contribution to society by exposing the industrial scale criminality of the Catholic Church is just obvious. But, by their actions, they prevented countless other children from being harmed by Catholic priests. The Spotlight team are truly heroic. But the fight goes on. The recent directive from the Pope that all cases of alleged child abuse should be reported up the line to the Church authorities - and not the police! - shows that the Church is still intent on covering things up. Any parent who suspects any wrongdoing should go to the police - even the Boston police who, presumably, have now got the message.

The Catholics in my family are so condescending I've seen the movie like 20x

Perpetrators must not go unpunished and victims must receive justice Cardinal O'Malley.

Absolutely criminal the abuses happened, then swept under the rug and hushed up. Moving bad priests around only allowed the abuse to continue and harm more victims.. To add insult to injury, silence was bought (or attempted to be bought). I heard one report that worldwide, the estimate of money paid out to victims was well over a billion dollars.

These people are heros, and the men are real men

People like Cardinal Law got to resign and then were moved to another position within the Vatican, they were never dragged before a judge to answer for their crimes. In many ways they were still treated as being above the law. Cardinal George Pell is the only high ranking priest in the Catholic Church to be brought to justice and found guilty, and that was in Australia. There should be no statute of limitations on child abuse.

December 2023 : If the newspaper people had not made these sexual crimes known to the public and police, these crimes would still be going on right now. The Catholic Church would continue to allow children and parishioners to be assaulted. I gave up Catholicism due to embarrassment. RS. Canada

Between “Spotlight “ (2016) and “The Verdict” (1982), Boston strikes me as an intimidating place of old money and cold blood.

I watched the film in the cinema. Riveting…

It’s a national tragedy that we are moving in a direction where investigative journalism is becoming less and less viable. With the rise of online news, the race to get a story before anyone else, and the increased demand for ad revenue because of declining readership-most news outlets aren’t willing to invest the kind of funding required to support a large investigative journalism team. Outside of a handful of national, well-established newspapers (NYT, WaPo, Boston Globe, LA Times, etc), most “news” outlets operate on a model that relies more on editorialized opinion crap. A few performative anchors go on live television and analyze, critique the work being done by actual journalists. How I wish there still existed major national news outlets/networks whose anchors’ political leanings weren’t known. Just imagine someone like Walter Cronkite delivering the evening news and adding his 2 cents to each story. That should be our nation’s litmus test for real news-if you know how the anchor votes, stop consuming your news from them. Read, educate yourself, be open to multiple viewpoints, and form your own opinion rather than having someone else either validate yours, or worse yet, provide you with your opinion.

The movie Spotlight is one of my all time favorite movies ever. We watched it in my Narrative Film course in college and when we talked about the film our professor asked “who in here is Catholic?” and some of the students raised their hands and he asked them if they remembered people talking about this sex abuse scandal and my classmates said that “we all knew about it but they didn’t really discuss it”

Just saw the movie and they did a great job revealing these aholes. I said to myself “this is journalism”

If any other organisation did what the church did...they'd be burned to the ground, black balled for ever...amazing to think they still have their claws dug in to society and exist...

I am a devout Catholic however I really don't understand why the Church have to cover up everything.

We need a spotlight here in Pennsylvania, notice how the latest abuse scandal has vanished from the news here. Absolutely nothing compared to the sex abuse survivors but I was routinely beaten by my grade school principal simply because this devil in the flesh enjoyed it.

Just rewatched the movie again in regards to this case, immense respect to u guys!

One of the most important pieces of investigative reporting of all time, the church goes back centuries and someone finally outed them, and because of it how many children worldwide were no longer ever allowed to be alone with a priest now that the truth is out? Huge piece with ripple effects that span the globe

There were more male victims than female victims because it's far easier for a man to gain access to boys than girls. Parents would question a daughter spending time with a priest, but would most likely be delighted to have a son spend time with a priest. The idea that the priest might influence a son to become a priest would be very seductive to a Catholic family -- particularly a poor family or a family headed by a single mother.

Drop the friggin' music, for cryin' out loud! Disruptive, distractive, and downright irritating!

The background music is totally unnecessary, in fact it is a distraction to the story telling. Leave that to Hollywood and Disney.

It's NOT what they say, it's what they do in court. And what they continue to do in court tells you, it's still "the beginning"....

I am in favor of prosecuting all criminals. BUT…. All of leaders of the church did the same things that Cardinal Law is remembered for. Name them all.

Forgiveness is personal to the victim, sex abuse is the churches nefarious way for their salvation fragmenting childrens minds got to have them speak in the world hey.
