It always gets to me how Clive Owen’s character just tries to have a normal conversation at the end. Like these guys are those highly trained sleeper agents, but they are also utterly alone. Like no one knows what they’re going and how tormented they are. So the professor takes the one chance he can get to actually have a chat with someone who might understand him, even if they are literally killing each other. It’s honestly sad that this is the only opportunity he’d get to talk about his headaches.

All the more tragic because Jason is amnesiac and unable to fully relate to him. His last words in the Bourne Ultimatum show that it did have impact. Bourne carried this day forward with him, which is remarkable and poignant.

my question is, yes there was danger because the dog got dissappeared, but how did Bourne know that there was a snipper who would kill him from far? why didnt he think that there could've been a man with hand-gun who would try to break in the house and try to kill bourne, just like the one who did and committed suicide after the fight, when marie was taking a shower in the bathroom, in the initial scene? I love this scene. I saw this movie for the first time as a kid, and remember being entranced by this. It was such a far cry from all the action sequences I had seen, no shaky cam, no superheroesque fist fights or cheesy one liners. Just cold clean action, a game of chess with tactics. Bourne gets the drop through intellect, not brawn. And then the “bad guy” being just another victim of the system Bourne is fighting. Superb.

One of the most tragic, heartbreaking true words I read about was from a Time LIFE history book about WW2. A Waffen-SS soldier was being interviewed by his captors after a concentration camp was liberated. He was the only one not shooting the prisoners so they questioned him. His words chill me to this very day and still horrify me when I learn how effective Heinrich Himmler's goons were at creating monsters. The man had joined a regular detachment of the Waffen-SS after the war broke out. He made a serious mistake that really enraged his commanding officer. The punishment was to be sent to the camps as a guard. He saw the horrors for the first time and demanded to know why he had been sent there. He was told it was punishment for his failures and this would be his job until his c.o. saw fit to relieve him. He told the Allied interrogators that was how the Nazi state created monsters. When they heard the Russians and Americans were getting closer, they went on a killing spree but he had lost respect for himself and refused to kill anyone. They didn't scare him any more. They had, in their quest to make him a monster, only made him see that he was human inside so he told them he was ready to die. He said he doesn't know why they didn't kill him but instead continued shooting the prisoners right up to when the Allies were able to break into the camp. He was not charged with any war crimes and was let go after the war. Sorry, but the story didn't give his name. I thought about the faceless SS guard when I heard the phrase "Look at what they make us give..."

My interpretation (for what little it is worth): When the Prof sees Bourne circling, he knows he's been made so he tries to reposition and setup an ambush in the field. The field conceals his position and has good vision on the treeline, where he expects Bourne to be going through as he makes his way to the Prof's previous sniper spot. Prof doesn't know what kind of weapon Bourne has, only that it is powerful and he may have seen it is a long weapon. If he had a long range rifle, setting up an ambush in the trees could have backfired (spotted and sniped), hence why he goes into the field. The trees are silhouetted against the white snow, so hiding up there would make him easier to spot than in the field. Field also give 360 concealment, while trees would be directional, and he can't be confident of what direction Bourne may approach. Maybe not a good decision, but there is reasoning for it. Bourne realises the field is a good ambush spot, and fires his shotgun to scare the birds. I think the intention of this is both as a distraction and when the birds begin to come back down they will avoid the area where the Prof is, so his position will be revealed. The Prof then realises he's been made again and is at a severe disadvantage, and attempts to flee. He ditches the rifle to minimise the weight, but doesn't want to run because it would make noise and give away his position. Note that Bourne gets him from behind, so the Prof is moving away from where he expects Bourne to be coming from. Bourne's strategy paid off, but it may have also backfired. For example, if the Prof had instead chose continue the ambush expecting Bourne to rush into the field from behind, he would probably have gotten him. The Prof probably thought that Bourne would be more cautious entering the field, or wait for the birds to come back down, and thus thought he could get away.

James Bond is Modern art. Jason Bourne is Postmodern Art. All PM art subverts the modern version of itself or of the genre. Postmodernism in film (Pulp Fiction for instance) began in the mid 90s though Casino Royale was the first PM James Bond film. Same thing with Star Trek TNG and Star Trek Discovery. TNG is modern or perhaps the first hypermodern material ever made. Discovery is Postmodern, and subverts all of the ideals of the original. What I'm saying is that, most films and all genres have gone through this since the 90s. Robert Ludlam, the author of the Bourne series started writing postmodern literature of the spy genre in the 70's. Postmodernism is better for marketing, money and viewership but is imo less effective at storytelling. Very few directors know how to wield the tools of PM effectively.

He lost sight of Bourne when he reached the bottom of the hill into the field and was trying to gauge which way Bourne went, when Bourne shot up into the air the professor realized HE fell into a trap and HE was the one being hunted now since the birds would avoid him when they landed thus giving away his position. Since his life was at that point in critical danger, he had to get out of the open field ASAP, of which he then ditched his heavier rifle and bag for a lighter/more mobile personal defense pistol. I come back to watch this scene every so often. It's just great writing. Owen's line about what they make you give - the subtlety of the writing and the performance is just beautiful. Owen has a history of these great scenes - the Caveman screaming match in Closer, the final scene (and many others) in Children of men. Should be way bigger, and play and old and pissed off Bond.

I think the whole idea was the Bourne was circling around to get above him when he crosses behind the treeline. As for the pistol, he chose the gun that allowed for the quickest movement and reaction when he was taking cover in the high grass. Bourne just made him panic with the constant sounds and movements from the birds, leading to him giving up his ability to ambush.
@dannyo512
@dannyo512 3 года назад
@@majorsnafu4771 I think that’s all poppycock. Bourne had to come to him, even if he somehow had an exact fix on his location, the professor could move 100 yards in either direction and still be in a pretty advantageous spot. Him taking off the scope was a good idea, but there’s no way you can convince me that his pistol is gonna be better than an ar in a giant field. Especially when he’s going up against a shotgun.

What I never understood is for a seasoned assassin, he made a several mistakes that evened out the playing field for Bourne. He gave up the high ground, losing sight of the field. took the silencer off, losing his ability to suppress his location, ditched his carbine, losing his weapon superiority, and ran through the brush.

@largol33t1
@largol33t1 2 года назад
Switching to the handgun was so he could move quickly. He knew time was running out so the only option left was to take the fight to Bourne as quickly as he could. The suppressor was now useless as Bourne knew he was being hunted and already had a good idea of all the possible sniping spots in the field. And a handgun is still a firearm and in the hands of a trained killer, can still do plenty of damage.

1st off suppressors don't just slide off the end of a rifle 2nd off why would you take your only sight off of your gun. Why would you in an open field, drop your rifle and take a handgun. This whole scene was done by a person who is never been shot at not once in their life

I see a lot of comments about why did the Professor leave his vantage position and why he switched to his pistol. Here's my take on this: 1. The Professor HAS to kill Bourne. It's his assignment and he cannot let him get away while Bourne can choose to fight or flight. 2. The hill where the Professor was positioned had a good view of the house but once Jason crossed to the woods, visibility might have been poor for a proper use of a sniper. Remember, HE has to get Jason, not the other way around. Staying there allows Jason to escape and miss his chance to get him. So that might lead him to think that moving down is the best choice. 3. I'm not well versed in guns and I'm not sure how much audible the shots of a suppressed AR are. But, if it's enough for Jason to get an idea of where the Professor is positioned then it's natural to think that repositioning is the smart thing to do. 4. Taking point 3 into account, The Professor does not know that Jason does in fact have a shotgun. In a location like this one, a hunting rifle with a scope is not out of the question and that would give Jason the tools to kill him at a longer range if he had a vague idea of where the shots came from. 5. Once on the field, the professor is hidden and DOES NOT throw away his rifle. Jason does not know where the professor is. My take is that the actual birds are meaningless and do not give away the Professor's position on themselves. I think Jason just took a gamble to psych the Professor into thinking the birds were giving him away. Don't forget that he KNOWS Jason is another assassin just like him. He moves and Jason spots him. 6. As he's sneaking through the field, ducking and keeping his head down, his rifle is no longer viable. He needs increased mobility so he switches to a pistol. It's a single target and if he attempts to go CQB, switching makes sense.

He gave away his position when he shot and missed and had to move. Jason could likely accurately guess where the shots came from. He was probably hoping to ambush Jason as Jason headed towards the spot where the shots came from. He probably switched weapons expecting a close quarters fight, maybe Jason was taking too long and figured he had to change plans. Idk
