True to Emily Kim style, I hope this film shines a light on the lack of diversity in Hollywood. Don't let anyone put you in a box. USC: Accepted NYU: Accepted
Your personality and moms personality were so great I couldn’t help but smile about her supporting you and all the emotion you had in the film! I’m gonna be applying to the film schools I want to go to in 2022 and this makes me very excited, as well as opens my eyes a lot as a black teenager. Let’s use what we have and break out of the box!
though it's not my usual taste, i really like this. i am applying film universities at the moment.i wish some day i can meet you because you just like sunshine.
I absolutely love this as a Latina person I understand what's it like to be stereotyped into this one box. I'll be applying for NYU ticsh as well this fall, hope to get in :)
I love how you shed light on such topics. Lack of diversity is a huge issue in the industry and for you to make a film like this is really admirable. I hope I have the honor of watching your fame and recognition grow and, if things work out for me, work with you in the future. Best Wishes
I love this. I understand this film a lot, having been called a Twinkie in middle school to being told I can't succeed as well as a Caucasian person, being a female and of Vietnamese descent. You are an inspiration and we need more filmmakers like you to change the industry. I'm praying you get into USC and NYU!!! Best wishes. (:
I'm really sorry about the way you were treated. This is a subject matter that's important to me and I hope to be able to contribute to changing how things are, even through this little film. Thank you so much!
this is honestly my favorite college film application i've ever watched. This type of content is so relevant, please keep doing what ur doing because ur doing amazing!!
I'm a rising senior this year looking for inspiration. I came to this and it put me to tears. Great job! Acceptance much deserved. God Bless you on your endeavors
wow! So far I've watched at least 10 portfolios on youtube but never got amazed. But your work is really good and I think...astonishing! It really reflects a lot what the society is like these days, especially we Asians and other minorities.Hope to see you on the stage of Oscars one day!
I loved this so much. As an Asian trying to make films, i absolutely adored your cinematography and acting. Looking forward to seeing you do great things :)
Thank you so much! I used a Canon Rebel t3i to film and Adobe Premiere to edit everything, except for the box scenes- those were edited in After Effects.
how much help did you get filming this? i have a really great story i want to make, but i also want to act in it because it's my story, do you have any tips?
Love love love this Emily! Lawrence sent this link to your video! So glad he did! You are so talented! Can't wait to watch you continue to crush it! 😍😍😍💪💪💪💪
Honestly didn’t expect much coming into this video, but this was excellent. It was so entertaining and shined light on a real problem. Being Asian, I remember signing a contract with an acting company when I was around 10, but not being able to audition for any roles because I was Asian and you had to be a white male to audition.
If you're looking for more diversity and film, you know there's hundreds of film that either include incredible Asian directors or actors. Also not even Asian people, there's amazing directors and actors made up of multiple ethnicities that are easy to find if you look for them.
While movies with actors of color definitely exist, the fact still remains that it is not enough. Of the 100 top films of 2016, 25 films featured no Black/African-American characters, 44 included no Asian or Asian-American characters, and 54 depicted no Hispanic/Latino characters. 2018 has been an improvement with movies such as Crazy Rich Asians but Hollywood still has a long way to go in terms of equal representation. Not to mention, racial and other types of stereotypes can be found in far too many films. So... Watched every second! uhm liked every second! [Take Two: LOVED EVERY SECOND!] ... and now I got one question.... "When's the movie coming out, I mean when is The Box coming out because this is damn great storytelling, haven't even gotten to the editing part because my goodness that was too great! With a mindset like yours, I'm sure you're going places with your career! PLEASE DON'T STOP CREATING! P.S Thanks Lawrence for sharing this on Twitter... was worth every second of my time!
Hi, I’m South Korean (currently living in South Korea) and i loved ur short film. I also want to go to USC!!! But it’s so hard to get enough info in my country ....Are there any activities you have done to apply for the USC and what was your grade, GPA(The ultimate question lol)
hi! i’m kind of in a pinch right now. so i have to turn in my usc application in two days, and my film is over the 3-5 minute limit. i see that yours is as well. how did you manage that, and did it give you any complications? please help!
Hey Chloe! The actual short I submitted to USC was exactly 5 minutes. This is the director's cut that I only uploaded to RU-vid, not USC. I also submitted this version to NYU, which has a 10 minute limit. I would definitely try to shave your film down to 5 minutes and really focus on the key elements of your film. In my USC version of this film, I cut out a bit of the intro, some of the dialogue with my mom on the couch, and also part of the outro monologue. Best of luck to you!!!
Oh that’s great!!! Congrats! You deserve it. USC is my dream school, but not for film, but for math and engineering.(My films are sooooooooooo bad 😂)We once had to make films for art class...I’ve never gotten a grade so low in my life.
That is AMAZING! Well deserved! I applied as a transfer student in the film program, but I won't find out anything for another month or so. Maybe I'll see you there!
Pullin' out the coupe at the lot Told 'em fuck 12, fuck SWAT Bustin' all the bells out the box I just hit a lick with the box Had to put the stick in a box, mmh Nice film though.
