FANTASTIC Review, Sully! This was actually my first Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli film, and it was FANTASTIC. Maybe a bit confusing at times, and a bit too long, but the animation is appalling, the writing is masterful, and I loved the direction.

Just got back from seeing it. Amazing visuals. Confusing and messy story. Seemed more like contemporary art where you have to look for hidden meanings and metaphors to feel invested and I think i just went into it wanting to be more easily entertained than I was. That being said, I look forward to rewatching it again when I'm more prepared to analyze.

Part of the theme Basically Miyazaki talking about leaving his “empire” or life’s work to someone else & dealing with life & loss.
@Fairy-Uvinq

Completely agree with what you’re saying. Now that I set the table with the first viewing, I’m looking forward to getting into the meat and potatoes on rewatch (I’m hungry). I think this one will get better with time, but not his most cohesive effort story-wise by a long shot. What’s your rating for this one? Thanks for watching!

I've looked up to Miyazaki since I was kid and first saw totaro and ponyo I wanted to be a comic artist and am still working at it but there is just something about his movies that just make you feel like you should chase your dreams and let them make the world a better place Also we have the same birthday January 5th

Completely agree! If there’s one director’s movies that feel like they’re shaking you by the shoulders and saying “just do it,” it’s Miyazaki’s movies. Have you seen The Boy and the Heron yet? Thanks for watching!
@makukawakami

I saw the movie twice and at the end of both showings, people wonder what does it all mean and it doesn't make sense. On the surface, it's a mix of spirited away and princess mononoke. Imo, this movie is the deepest Miyazaki movie. The story is a bout a boy processing his grief and trying to live in a new life that his father has thrusted him in. It has a similar theme to The Wind Rises but a lot less obvious. At the end, it became a love letter from Miyazaki to us and the future generation. Minor spoiler alert: Also there's so much references to older Ghibli films, like the flight of the warawara, the Mitsubishi Zero canopies, the look of the maids ect. To an extent, it's a metaphor to Miyazaki's career. At the end, he's telling us and the future generation to "create beautiful worlds untainted by malice." That block that Mahito kept at the end is a symbol that represents the movie itself, a powerful reminder that we have the power to create something beautiful.
@SullyStreams
@SullyStreams 7 месяцев назад
I think saying this film is a metaphor for Miyazaki's career as a whole is a great way of looking at it, there are tons of parallels there. This is definitely one of the most dense movies he has ever made, so I'm looking forward to dissecting it further on rewatch. Thanks for watching!

Tbh, I feel the movie was very strong in the human world and completely fell in its face the moment he stepped into the spirit world. Everything of the first part is thrown out the window with no real sense of reasoning behind what is happening. The experiences don't seem to really affect the character much and the world is very underused and under explained which is funny since they seem to have gone to decent lengths to create it. I don't know, the art and voice acting are amazing but the story falls flat on the second part. It feels like a shallow pond wanting to be seen as an ocean. I feel it kinda wasted its themes and the set up of the first half. Just comes out as pretentious to me

Absolutely agree with your review. Love Miyazaki but made no connection to the characters and it left me cold. I felt like Mitazaki did when he first watched Tales From the Earthsea. Maybe if I watch it again some time down the road I will feel different. Just too much going on and rhe message was lost to me.
