In early 2023 there was a concerted effort to boycott one of the most influential and beloved properties when a new video game was announced.
That boycott failed spectacularly.
Today we're dicussing the failed boycott of Hogwarts Legacy and why it was destined to fail.

I’m a leftist and whole heartedly support trans people. The reality is that the vocal minority made it so hard for most reasonable popular outlets to play the game which is why they didn’t and why this all happened. It is not “wokeness’s” fault it is the vocal minority. I think JK Rowling’s views are backward and terrible. I still can’t wait to be able to play the game because hogwarts open world is a dream for me. The vocal minority is not the whole of wokeness. And this idea that every woke person has blue hair, is loud and annoying is just laughable. Lastly please, I’m begging you don’t turn into a political channel. It may garner more views but it’s really not somethign to be proud of or something that people who are currently fans of your channel enjoy. You basically cutting of 70% of your audience with this video given that fantasy readers and community members are disproportionately leftists. Don’t become a political commentator please. I love your videos and want to create a channel like yours in the near future. Don’t throw all that away for the nice feeling of ranting politically on the internet. There’s so many copy and paste right wing commentators but someone who puts effort into their fantasy video essays like you is hard to find. Hell your South African bro, represent. Like I said, I have no problem with the left. I have a problem with that "vocal minority" as you call it. I call them woke, but what they really are are authoritarians who want to police what others do and say. Just like the puritanical Christians of the 90s. Now if you're on the left, but can accept that others have different views and you feel no need to bully or force others into seeing things your way then I have absolutely no problem with you and do not see you as part of that crowd. Furthermore don't worry. I don't intend on becoming a political channel. I will, however, be honest about my opinions when politics come into contact with storytelling and philosophy and such. This video is one of the very few where I outright take a stance against a certain group / ideology. Take my video on Good Hunting for example. There I talked about something that could easily have been more overtly political (climate change), but instead of going for the "hurr durr the woke are dumb" argument that many people would go for, I actually talk about practical solutions and what stands in our way of those solutions. We may have different views on fixing the problem, but that's a good thing since allowing different opinions to compete is what allows the best ideas to come forward. To put into context for you, I wholeheartedly support trans people. I have no problem with the LGBT community and my best friend irl has been openly gay for like at least 15 years. Hell I'd probably even have a romantic relationship with a trans person if I knew one irl and we got along, I'm not against that either. My problem is with the small subsection of the left that we call woke. The activists who try to bully and subjugate others. I'm not even extremely right wing or anything. I'm a fairly progressive atheist who happens to hold a certain collection of views that makes me a "right wing fascist" in the eyes of many on the left. Purely because I don't agree with everything they claim I should believe in. I hope this explanation helps you understand where I'm coming from. I'll actually pin this comment for others to see as well. Much love ❤️

As a Christian I disagree with almost everything that JK Rowling believes personally, but why would that make me hate the love I had for Harry Potter growing up? She built an amazing world (it's no Sanderson level) and no one should take that away from her all because she believes that a woman is actually a woman🤣

Haven't played the game yet or even knew there was any drama surrounding it. Just wanted to say that the love I have for fantasy pretty much came from this franchise when I read the books in the ninth grade and I remember the second fantasy series I read (Stormlight Archive) was as a result of the vacuum that HP left. Didn't know much about Rowling's views before this and you might just have sent me down a rabbit hole with this video, but to think this random British lady led me down the path to The Way of Kings, which helped me out of a rut as a teen, is kinda heartwarming. Now I just need to play the game because there is no way I'm gonna be stopped from being a Slytherin kid at Hogwarts for the kicks

I think this is an unique issue, the content everyone likes came first, then years after everything was done and over with Rowling decided to lose her mind on a ridiculous crusade of nothingness, I decided to buy and play the game because i'm a gamer and I already liked this material, I just won't support any new original projects from her going forward

The difference between supporting JK's work and Lovecraft's is that she is still alive and benefiting from it. While I am on JK's side in this instance I believe that if you're on the other side it would make sense to boycot her work. Obviously it backfired on them but on a principle level their intent makes sense, even if I heavily disagree with their position.

You can be a fan of the art of a shitty person without supporting that person's opinions.The story of Harry Potter doesnt promote JK Rowling's views, from what I understand, some of Lovecraft's stories do. Plus at this point by boycotting Harry Potter products, you're not hurting Rowling at all, she's already rich. The people who do suffer are the staff working on the games or movies who don't make the money the big wigs do. If you don't want their views to spread, unfollow them on social media and don't share their posts.

I agree that from their perspective it makes sense to boycott it, but they absolutely went about it the wrong way and they expected everyone else to fall in line with them. To the point of being vitriolic about it. And to your point about death of the author for living creators, I believe it still stands. Death of the author is a stance on separating the work from the creator in your mind. Because a creative work should stand on its own without the creator trying to add more context or extra information to the work post-public release.

just to give you a bit of context before you read my comment I'm from Germany and my political views are for a German a bit more of the left side but not that much with a very good dose of Green in it(compared to the USA Politics I'm heavy left) and I'm cis straight, my viewpoint of on persons are as long as they don't physically harm people or bully someone I don't have a problem with it. That last sentence basically explained my standing on J.K.R. Just because she expressed some viewpoints I'm not the same opinion. I don't hate her on the other side the rage against some streamers or other people who enjoyed the game where insane. Especially on English-speaking streams, I didn't saw it that extreme in German ones. As to the opinion that there are no creations from "left" side I strongly disagree, it's just not as visible, and sometimes hard for people outside of the bubble to read. I had a trans girlfriend who was also heavily into books all kinds of genres. She recommended to me some books from some stories sides or self-published ones that have trans persons as main characters or one of the early plot points is a sex change of some kind, some books came close to the quality of a Sanderson book storywise but are relatively unknown outside the trans bubble. During the corona pandemic, there was a fairly successful German book released with a gay main character my grandma bought it and stop reading it at some point because it was a bit too gay for her even if she like the book to that point overall, and I think that why there the opinion in the more right-sided bubble there is no good left fiction. They often don't like that stuff stats written by very liberal authors.

I get what you're saying. I must have misspoke in the video. The left can obviously create very good art / stories. The woke (who I see as different from the classical left) can't. The woke only corrupt and destroy. The left can create just like the right can. But the woke cannot. And while the woke is a product of the left, it is not representative of the entire left. Just like the alt-right religious nationalists are a product of the right, but not representative of the entire right. Both sides have their monster-children. The woke just happen to have cultural power right now.

Woke started out just meaning being aware and concerned about social justice but has largely evolved into a negative term used to describe toxic behaviours by 'social justice warriors' who try and cancel or deplatform people for expressing views that don't conform to the latest 'correct' ideology (even if those views are from a 10 year old tweet and mildly insensitive rather than hateful) and who label anyone who disagrees with them a bigot. Like it or not, semantic drift happens and word definitions and connotations change over time which is what happened here.

Being "Woke" is definitely very negative and toxic, and nobody could put it better than Anita Sarkeesian did..."Everything is racist, everything is sexist, everything is phobic, and you (the narcissistic self-appointed hero) have to point it all out" Woke is basically being psychotically obsessed with finding and inventing racism and sexism and phobias everywhere, all the time, and in bad faith (a.k.a you are just making shit up), because it feeds your bloated ego and gives you power over others to shame, bully and mob them into doing what you want, how f#%cking convenient.
