Their school is run this way. My first interaction with Rener was when I drove out to Torrance with my son (then about 5) to pick up some mats to train at home. We peeked in at the class and I saw Rener near the edge of the mats so I asked if I could get his picture with my son. He told me to wait just a minute and finished what he was doing. Then he tidied up his gi and brought my son over and posed with him so I could get some nice pictures. Later, I joined and got my blue belt at their school and saw that he is like this all the time.
I love this! I’m 34 and have cerebral palsy. I’ve been doing bjj for 2 years and still get destroyed by everyone haha. Someday I’ll figure out how to turn my weakness into a my greatest strength on the mats!
Man, I didn´t know the whole history and all about Boyd. But I saw one video of you saying that things about the years. I am 50, brown belt and I use that a lot in my mind. Tks
As a 4 stripe purple belt 2 months shy of 51 (with 2 knee surgeries (need another 1) a shoulder surgery and currently a torn labrum in my OTHER shoulder) makes me feel rejuvenated every time I hear this. I think about it all the time I get down a little bit and might have a bad roll against someone younger or bigger OR BOTH and then I think about what Rener said HOW BAD would I have got destroyed WITHOUT BJJ. 😂 I heard this a few years ago but didn’t know about the history of the origin. VERY CLASSY ACT by naming it in his honor and sorry for the loss of your friend. ❤😢
As a grown man who weighs under 135 lbs., this concept really helped me put things into perspective when rolling with guys outweighing me by 50+ lbs. I was also over 40 when I started BJJ. Rener went through this more thoroughly in a longer form video a few years ago called "Jiu Jitsu after 40."
Besides fort Lewis I was also stationed in alaska with 172nd SBCT 4/11fa 2006-2008 good times standing there as well got advanced with ten guys jumping me tapped them out and stood back up great skill to have that also helps you understand life I also stood in Iraq with this skill as Jr. Enlisted in the army just want to get somewhere and start rolling again understanding this form in drills! 🤩
When you explained the concept of belt and weight I totally got a memory from when it was explained to us the exact concept in basic training was at fort sill Oklahoma home of field artillery combat mos (army) 2004 good times I stood with this style up too 2016 haven't stood since? Would like to get back at it real talk...last match I had was in my last unit after getting off active duty with 1/346LSB 191 INF BRIGRADE GREAT MEMORY FOUGHT A GUY IN IRAQ THE SOLDIERS SAID was hard to beat he lay on ya beat that form with Gracie form fought in my back because of them saying that 2009-2010 3/2 ID 1/37FIELD ARTILLERY REGIMENT all my fights I had were submissions but almost all were broke up they would turn into fights period....
This Boyd Belt system is a good concept to help people understand how athleticism, age, and youthfulness can make up for gaps in skill, experience and mat time. However, don't treat the numeric qualifications Rener gave as gospel/doctrine. They are more loose and fast. Everyone has their unique blend of athleticism and skill at any given moment in time, and there are more exceptions to the rule than you'd guess out there.
I always say dont compare yourself to others, compare how you today would fair vs the day1 version of you when you started to train. I would kick my own ass if I could roll with that guy from 4 years ago
Not Robert Coram’s OODA Loop John Boyd ;-) great book, and interesting man he was for sure….but uncle John was one of the nicest, humble humans you’ll meet…on the mat helping and mentoring others till the very end.
