I was actually in the Army for a little bit, got out early do to some mental crap. But here is what I remember about camping. During the Hammer, we set up our platoons tents in a triangle formation. This formation had one entry/exit point. If you wanted to enter you tent you were required to enter through this small gap where the fireguard was constantly manned. We had a very small tent, large enough for you and your gear, nothing else. We literally slept with our rifles. I had first fireguard I think, we stayed up for an hour keeping watch while the others slept. Then rotated after an hour had elapsed. When I went to sleep I decided to take off my blouse and get "comfortable", it actually wasn't that bad and I fell asleep using my ruck as a pillow. When I woke up for my next shift though I was freezing my ass off. I had made the mistake of leaving my tent flap slightly open and I guess the dew had allocated on me. Spent the rest of that night attempting to stay warm. During the Anvil, we set up camp like we did previously and I think I had the second shift, during the anvil, we heard coyotes howeling all night as if they had caught their prey. And a couple of times I had heard what sounded like a hog in the bushes. The anvil wasn't too bad, but was longer than the Hammer. Although, I did end up having my tent on some uneven and slightly rocky ground. Wasn't too fun sleeping their. During the Forge was the longest of them all, the only thing I really remember about the nights during the forge was what I felt like after NIC. Man we had to crawl through dry gravel while the drill sgt was shooting an automatic weapon above us with live ammo. That sh*t was crazy, and exhausting. When I finished the course (I was the last guy to leave the pit I think). I stumbled down to the medic truck and then to my camp. My knees and elbows felt like they were bleeding and my shens were bruised. I sat down against my ruck (we slept out of our tents that night I think) and was in pain for a while until finally my body coped. I think on one of the earlier nights of the forge the drill seargents through a practice grenade into our camp. I saw it fly in and hit the ground and literally everyone said "INCOMING INCOMING INCOMING!" and we hit the ground covering our heads and making sure NOT to hold our breath. It was supposed to simulate indirect fire since our previous lesson was about back on the anvil. I guess they decided to test us lmao. But before the Army, I mean it technically wasn't camping, but me and my dad were homeless for a bit and at the time I was still young (like elementary school) and I asked my dad if I could sleep in the back of the pickup truck. We had parked under an old oak tree and as I layed down I found myself in an uncomfortable position with one of our space heaters digging into my back, but I covered up with an old quilt and watched the tree wave in the gentle summer breeze. I swear I ain't never slept so good in my life. That was the most calm and at peace that I have ever felt even though the corner of an box heater was under my back. Oh and I woke up that morning to find out I slept so good that I slept through the rain... Yeah idk how dafuq I did that.
