The Boys in Company C ending

"Living has got to be more important than winning"
This is the ending to the 1978 movie, The Boys In Company C. It's a film that documents the true story of Charlie company that saw service in Vietnam in '67-68 and included a group of young guys who knew nothing about war or fighting in a far off land. I'm uploading the ending to the film because this film gets maligned quite a bit for various reasons. But one thing that never gets mentioned by any movie critic is that the movie was inspired by a true account of a specific platoon sent to Vietnam. This wasn't just made up. Characters portrayed were based off of real people. That distinguishes this movie from other Vietnam war movies in my book. I think this film has been overlooked because of higher profile films that were made in the 80's, like Platoon and Full Metal Jacket. Both of those movies borrowed heavily from Boys in Company C. Those films also had a bigger budget. This Vietnam war movie broke ground, especially in stating head-on that the war in Vietnam was a civil war between North and South. Boys in Company C essentially made the case that the U.S. had no reason to be in Vietnam. Unfortunately, The Boys in Company C took on too many things which is what kept it from being a better movie. But all in all, it was one of the very first Vietnam war movies and it deserves a hell of a lot more respect than the bigger budget Vietnam war films of the 80's.

I saw this movie in the theater with my navy officer dad. Dad wasn't big on going to movies, certainly not with his 15yo son but he wanted to watch this movie with his son who was looking at a military career at the time. Dad was relatively safe on submarines during the Vietnam war. I don't know if that bothered him but I think it may have. The movie wasn't anti-war like many movies at the time. After the movie we just talked about the inevitable tragedy of war, and how war sends many young men to their graves and about survival. The movie and watching it with my dad has stayed with me ever since. God rest his soul and all those who have fought and died.

David Witcher Bless YOU and your father especially for his service to and for america. I honor him today. I was born on seart air force base nashville tennessee in 1962 at 1.0 lbs and 0.6 ounces. My father flew home during vienam on a airplane full of body bags and caskets from vietnam to see me premature. My dad was in the navy and did three tours on ship. My uncle did over 20 plus years in the United States Air Force. He died a few years ago of cancer. From my heart I salute your father! I hate all these NFL jerks and anti american jerks. I dont need professional sports for my entertainment.I dont need NFL or Base ball if they all want to disrespect our flag, our National Anthem, and our Pledge of allegiance to America! I hate muslims with a passion. I love america of old. I believe in a sovereign United States of America. I hate the united nations and the one world government! I love Israel and every Jewish person on planet earth. I Love the Lord Jesus Christ and all christians. I love the United States military and all her solders. I just wanted to tell you, and your late father now in heaven that I solute you plus, I say a honest Thank You for his unselfish service for our freedom to be christian americans.

This is one of the best, yet underrated and obscure, Vietnam films ever. Saw this in their theater not long after it first came out. This scene is a gut punch. For one thing, you don't see Alvin's death coming and it happens so quickly and unexpectedly. Especially wrenching is the part @0:30 - Fazio realizes that Alvin is dead when, 5 seconds before, he was talking to him. If you can't feel his pain, you're not human. Poor bastard is never gonna be the same again. The emotional icing on the cake was watching Alvin's journal pages blowing away in the wind.

And on top of that he and Al had just gotten into an argument well really Vinny got mad at al for not having sex thinking he's gay. And al had gotten shot like really bad the part where Tyrone and the other company commander said phukk it were gonna blow up this hill al had gotten shot like bad and Vinny never told him he was sorry he already felt bad about that and was extremely hurt when al looked like he was going to die. Then Vinny said I'll protect you earlier in the movie which laid down what Tyrone said to pike I can't help you live man. Just conflict and resolutions happening all across the movie. Imho if you do respond to me apocalypse now and this movie is like apocalypse now is way better but if you want a more realistic version of apocalypse now or at least a precursor before you watch it this is most definitely the movie to do so. The parallels would be gross if this movie didn't have any comedic elements in it

Hamburger Hill, was a great movie as well. Based on a true story. But, the best movie or series was Band of Brothers.
4 года назад
@@sweetness_5772 - I think Hamburger Hill is a great film. But it's overshadowed by FMJ, because Lee Ermey is in the film. Plus, I've heard Vietnam Veterans call FMJ an insult to the Corps. Many medals shown aren't correct, among other things. But then, what do I know? I never enlisted, all thanks to very bad nearsightedness. The highest allowable astigmatism is 3.0, mine was about 3.2 to 3.3. It's a shame, but no use crying over something back in 1982.

He’s not lying. Just googled “Tyrone Jackson, USMC” and it popped up. Like the movie counterpart, he was from Chicago and he did die due to explosive ordinance while on duty in Vietnam. Just age 20 like the fictional Tyrone. And he was from Company C. Tragic. He’s on the Vietnam war memorial wall per the information.

I was a sophomore in high school and in USMC JROTC when this came out and every guy I knew went and saw it. I was also in a club called the "river rats" and we went to sport events and heckled the opposing team, and I wrote a version of the Jodies they sing in the movie. It would drive the other Side nuts. We had about 40 guys singing those songs. Then , 3 days after graduation, I was in bootcamp MCRD San Diego, on June 10, 1981. About a month into bootcamp, in July, the D.I. walked into the squad bay and said "listen up recruits, we just shot down 2 Libya fighter jets and you going to war!" We all went nuts, Gung ho as it gets , ready to kick some ass. That didn't happen, as Kadafi backed down. Then I went to Camp Lejune for schooling and the Marines went into Beruit Lebanon. I got pneumonia really bad during school and was the bottom of the class, so the bottom 3 got orders for Beruit. I had pneumonia so bad, that they put me in the hospital for 7 days , 24 hour nurse (who was fine, and I fell in love with her hahah , Lt. Faherty I'll never forget) and they sent me back to California to die. (I didn't know that until a year later) I survived and was at Pendleton for a year and a half, then volunteered to go to the Rock (Okinawa) . The last two days on the rock, my replacement showed up, and he was my school mate from Lejune, and he went to Lebanon instead of me. He told the story the night I left the rock to my buddies and me. He was lacing his boots out in the trench/tent barracks outside the main building that was blown up. He heard small arms fire, the truck ramming the gate killing his friend, and hitting the 8 story building and killing hundreds of his friends/marines. He was just 5 min late to duty. I missed out on that because I got pneumonia. This is completely true what I'm putting down here. I always think of this movie (boys in co c) before I went in, during, and after. Watching parts of it now has a different feel than when I was 17. I lucked out from almost certain death on either side of the coin. I don't feel anyone was watching over, it was just one of those things. I knew a lot of Vietnam grunts while I was in, as it was only 6 years since the end of it all, and they were all the coolest men I ever met, because they made it through, and they were all at a sort of peace, that the civilians will never know. I always bow my head and give a small silent salute to anything that reminds me of the guys that didn't make it. I feel they should show this film in school, so the kids get an idea of what life is really like outside of the fantasy.

My grandfather and my great uncle (his brother) we’re both in Vietnam. Both infantry men. My grandfather spoke of his time there in front me only once, it was my parents, my grandfather and his brother and my grandmother all playing cards while all of us kids pretended to play cards at our little kiddy table. My father had mentioned something from his time in the military (desert storm) and it sent my grandfather into a haze of memories I could see on his face. He then opened his mouth and began to speak not knowing I was right there listening. He spoke about wanting to die a hero over there, he spoke about holding pieces of his fellow marines not knowing that he was holding the torso of a buddy while his legs were somewhere else. He talked about going through villages and completely shredding them with machine gun fire before ever asking anybody any questions. He talked about the day he finally got to come home for good and how sad he was to leave his fellow marines over there. That was the only time I’d ever heard him and his brother talk about Nam and I’ll never forget it. There’s many more things he said it’s just too much to type out. But the general consensus was that it was hell, and that he wished he’d never come back from it.
@LordGreystoke

Thanks for the comment. I'm trying to understand your last phrase where you write that your grandfather wished "he'd never come back from it." I'm not sure I understand this. Are you saying he would have preferred to have remained in Vietnam fighting? That he wished he'd never come back to the States? Please clarify. Thanks.
@claydice1315
@claydice1315 4 года назад
Byron Gordon I’m saying he wished he would’ve died over there with his fellow marines. He watched many many men die in combat, and at some point in his tour over there it clicked into his brain that he was going to die there as well. Do it gets built up in your mind that any moment you’re going to die fighting for your country. And when that didn’t happen he was let down. He couldn’t understand how he watched thousands of men die in combat yet he made it out alive. It was guilt, mixed with jealousy. War is something that I myself have never experienced. But things that I have experienced I can understand the feeling of knowing you should’ve died but didn’t. And then when you get back to your normal life it’s all you think about. My grandfather wished he would’ve died in Vietnam with his best friends. And there’s a lot of them that feel the same way.

Darkness By Lord Byron (George Gordon) I had a dream, which was not all a dream. The bright sun was extinguish'd, and the stars Did wander darkling in the eternal space, Rayless, and pathless, and the icy earth Swung blind and blackening in the moonless air; Morn came and went-and came, and brought no day, And men forgot their passions in the dread Of this their desolation; and all hearts Were chill'd into a selfish prayer for light: And they did live by watchfires-and the thrones, The palaces of crowned kings-the huts, The habitations of all things which dwell, Were burnt for beacons; cities were consum'd, And men were gather'd round their blazing homes To look once more into each other's face; Happy were those who dwelt within the eye Of the volcanos, and their mountain-torch: A fearful hope was all the world contain'd; Forests were set on fire-but hour by hour They fell and faded-and the crackling trunks Extinguish'd with a crash-and all was black. The brows of men by the despairing light Wore an unearthly aspect, as by fits The flashes fell upon them; some lay down And hid their eyes and wept; and some did rest Their chins upon their clenched hands, and smil'd; And others hurried to and fro, and fed Their funeral piles with fuel, and look'd up With mad disquietude on the dull sky, The pall of a past world; and then again With curses cast them down upon the dust, And gnash'd their teeth and howl'd: the wild birds shriek'd And, terrified, did flutter on the ground, And flap their useless wings; the wildest brutes Came tame and tremulous; and vipers crawl'd And twin'd themselves among the multitude, Hissing, but stingless-they were slain for food. And War, which for a moment was no more, Did glut himself again: a meal was bought With blood, and each sate sullenly apart Gorging himself in gloom: no love was left; All earth was but one thought-and that was death Immediate and inglorious; and the pang Of famine fed upon all entrails-men Died, and their bones were tombless as their flesh; The meagre by the meagre were devour'd, Even dogs assail'd their masters, all save one, And he was faithful to a corse, and kept The birds and beasts and famish'd men at bay, Till hunger clung them, or the dropping dead Lur'd their lank jaws; himself sought out no food, But with a piteous and perpetual moan, And a quick desolate cry, licking the hand Which answer'd not with a caress-he died. The crowd was famish'd by degrees; but two Of an enormous city did survive, And they were enemies: they met beside The dying embers of an altar-place Where had been heap'd a mass of holy things For an unholy usage; they rak'd up, And shivering scrap'd with their cold skeleton hands The feeble ashes, and their feeble breath Blew for a little life, and made a flame Which was a mockery; then they lifted up Their eyes as it grew lighter, and beheld Each other's aspects-saw, and shriek'd, and died- Even of their mutual hideousness they died, Unknowing who he was upon whose brow Famine had written Fiend. The world was void, The populous and the powerful was a lump, Seasonless, herbless, treeless, manless, lifeless- A lump of death-a chaos of hard clay. The rivers, lakes and ocean all stood still, And nothing stirr'd within their silent depths; Ships sailorless lay rotting on the sea, And their masts fell down piecemeal: as they dropp'd They slept on the abyss without a surge- The waves were dead; the tides were in their grave, The moon, their mistress, had expir'd before; The winds were wither'd in the stagnant air, And the clouds perish'd; Darkness had no need Of aid from them-She was the Universe.

Just assume that their lives are less important than the one or two Americans that might die during an attack like this and you will understand.

The stuff about what happened to these characters at the end is confusing. Was this based on actual events or was it just part of the story at the end? I see no references to actual Marines by those names.

Tyrone Washington was based on a real Tyrone Washington. Vinnie Fazio was based on a real Vinnie Fazio. Lt. Archer was based on a real Lt. Archer. Billy Ray Pike was based on a real Billy Ray Pike. All of them served or were part of Charlie company. Most of the other characters were fictionalized.

We never said Cadence like that. When I was going to Parris Island. It only came from a drill instructors. Also our heads were completely shaved. I'm only making a comparison this is not making one place better than the other we're all Marines. I. Was stationed at weapons battalion Parris Island for a year and a half. I spent a lot of time around drill instructors and recruits. God bless the Marines every one of them.

This was the very first movie I seen that dealt with the Vietnam war my dad took my brother and I to the movie theater to see the movie i was 13 years old I'm the generation that was born when the first combat troops set foot in country i was born in 1965 i have read four books about the Vietnam war and I have watched every movie I can see that covers that illegal and unjust war. I hate the way the way these honorable and courageous men were spit on and completely abandoned by this country when they came home from that hell of a war. Most of them didn't have a choice not to fight in that illegal and unjust war I have always believed that the draft was a sham to make the poor and the politically unconnected fight wars while the rich elite get a fucking pass. The way our country has become so CORRUPT and so unbalanced in the education system and financial system it deserves the military it gets. We now have a military hierarchy that is in the process of destroying the fighting ability of our arm forces and in the process of making sure that our country cannot defend itself.

The best of the Vietnam movies but Platoon was very close. Stone was a grunt in the 25th. The other day I saw a video that showed we now have in-acters playing the part, people going out in rut sacks, 16s, helmets. Why in the hell would you want to?
@stellarhyme3
@stellarhyme3 6 лет назад
danbeau Platoon was better and more accurate than this depiction. Boys of Company C was the best Vietnam movie until Platoon came out. Once Platoon came out no contest. Same goes for Boot camp, Boys was the best Marine Corps Boot Camp movie until Full Metal Jacket came out. I still love Boys, it does a decent job of showing the training and the war and conflict. Platoon was better at the war and conflict but showed no training. Full Metal Jacket had Boot camp down but sucked at showing war and conflict.

This was probably the first US movie made about the Vietnam War after the end of the war in 1975. It was made only three years after the Fall of Saigon. Whilst a good movie for its time, by modern standards it obviously lacks historical accuracy in some ways, as was common for late 1970's made movies. Somewhat overtaken and forgotten by the big budget Vietnam movies that would follow in the 1980's.
