The finale to the boys season 3 was truly epic, and featured some huge turning points for not only Homelander, Ryan Butcher, Billy Butcher and Soldier Boy, but Queen Maeve, Black Noir and A-Train too. I talk about all my favourite moments as I try to get through one of the hottest days of the year. Seriously, I was melting recording this....

A little off-topic, but I would like to see either you @Full Fat Videos or @Implicitly Pretentious making a video essay about Mother's Milk and how his own personal struggles, ideology and principles are butting heads for the better or the worse (often the better, given that he is the third purest-hearted character next to Hughie and Starlight, with Kimiko being the fourth one) with the remainder of The Boys, while dealing with superhero racism (whether with Liberty/Stormfront, Soldier Boy, or the half-unconscious opportunistic tendency from his own allies and friends to brush off his own agenda and anger when it bothers them) and the fear to transmit the generational curse of his and his fathers's traumas to his daughter. I think his story arc has been too many times brushed off by video essayists and critics... pretty much for the same reasons that Butcher, Hughie and Starlight does in their own respective ways, I'm afraid so.

A lot of people seem to hate that, but I really loved it. Yes, in a realistic overall sense, letting Ryan get killed by Soldier so Homelander could die too, would’ve been the most worldly ethical solution. But god forbid these flawed characters and at times awful people actually do something ideally heroic and refuse to beat the villain through the sacrifice of young innocent blood. That’s what super heroes do, regardless of what the future holds, they save lives that are in danger in the here and now. They don’t stand by a let people die. While The Boys isn’t about this overall, having a finale of one season execute this was satisfying.

I had a few issues with the episode such as Butcher suddenly fighting Soldier Boy without negotiating the deal or making a compromise. Also, why didn't Homleander just fly Ryan out of the building as soon as he saw him injured? It made no sense that he was just holding him there trying to wake him up. In the end, I kind of felt for Soldier Boy as he was the only one who held up his end of the deal. It was also ridiculous that Maeve survived Soldier Boy's blast and fell down from a skyscraper with only a few scratches. Unlike usual, this episode just didn't satisfy me as much as I wanted it to. EDIT: The scene with Starlight powering up was so anti-climactic as she only knocked him out for a few seconds but they made it look so epic.

I feel like the only way this season would have ended in a satisfying way for everyone would be to either kill soldier boy or homelander. Which I personally believe would have been a terrible call, these characters still have massive development ahead. This whole season was just character building, showing vulnerabilities to each and every character. And I feel like they nailed it perfectly.
@AndrewThoesen
@AndrewThoesen Год назад
I find both of them within their characterization. Ryan is a huge weakness for both. For Butcher, it’s the only part of Becca he has left. For Homelander, it’s the only family he has (that loves him). Homelander was probably determining how injured he was before moving him. Also, egotistically, probably wanted to kill everyone. You could also see the conflict on Butcher’s face. Maeve saw it, and she knew he was going to impulsively go back on the plan. I just absolutely love that glance between Homelander and Butcher. Shows you they still have all the animosity in the world, and are very happy to get back to killing each other, as soon as the threat to Ryan is eliminated. Like two bitter divorcees who both care for their kid.

@@BonzerMrT You haven't made a good point. Butcher hates Homelander to the point where he is willing to do anything it takes to stop him. However, to your point, he also cares about Ryan and doesn't want anything bad to happen to him. But, here's the thing, Soldier Boy isn't someone beyond reason as we had seen him stick to the plan even through to the end despite knowing that he's killing his son. Butcher could have easily negotiated with him or at least try to convince him to only attack Homelander without touching Ryan. I don't know if it would have worked but he should have at least tried it as Solider Boy is the lesser evil of the two. Furthermore, Soldier Boy only attacked Ryan out of anger for being hit with his heat vision. He doesn't have any resentment towards him as he did with payback. I personally feel that he would have agreed with Butcher and continued with the OG plan. But now, The Boys are back at square one and haven't made any progress but are rather worse off than before.

I love how pretty much every single video essay about the final 2 episodes of this season has included like a 5-10 second loop of MM cracking Todd in the face. I’ll never get sick of that, it’s just so satisfying. Though it does raise disturbing questions about the influence MM had on Todd being so accepting of Homelander murdering that “libtard”. I suspect Todd’s excitement for that came from his feelings of impotence and inadequacy: he WISHED he had the power to just murder MM after he was punched in the face, but he doesn’t so his impotent incelness leads him to be that much more enthusiastic about Homelander doing the same thing, and proving that “it’s OK” to murder people you don’t like. He probably still would have been there if MM hadn’t hit him, but would he have started cheering so readily? Probably, but it’s an interesting question all the same.

I really like how when Soldier Boy breaks Homelander's illusion of them being a family, it ties up with what he said earlier in the episode, about his experience with his father. The "I'm you" "I know. You're a disappointment" falls in line with the whole "Like father like son" theme we have with Ryan and Homelander, and Butcher and his father. Soldier Boy is using the same words that hurt him so much as a weapon against the worlds most powerful being, and him being his father makes it work. Homelander was pretty much helpless against Butcher and Soldier Boy until Ryan intervened, starting the battle between all of them. He could have been done right then and there, I think a lot of people are overlooking that.

I really don't believe we've seen the last of Noir. He got his literal brains bashed out by Soldier Boy and survived. Getting his guts ripped out doesn't seem like it would finish him. Plus we didn't see him die for sure, just Homelander with the mask and Noir laying on the ground kinda still (they did the same type of thing with ATrain earlier). I'm thinking that Vaught or the government or whoever will try to find a way to use Soldier Boy's power-taking ability. Like they somehow find a way to synthesize it like V, and use Noir as the guinea pig. Maybe they'll give him the same power and he could end up killing Homelander as revenge (lining up a little more with the comics as well). I can see them using the A Train/Blue Hawk thing as a sort of set up for giving a part of SB to Noir to either keep him alive or use him as a weapon against HL or both. Idk I'm just coming up with ideas to fill the void until the next season lmao 😂 I do like the Starlight power up scene because I think it caps her and Hughie's struggle this season as a couple. He is at his best when he's using his strengths to lift her up, not carry her to safety. It's not about one being the "protected" and one the "hero", it's about them working as a team to heighten each other's strengths, and makeup for each other's weaknesses. I think it's pretty cool and powerful. I've seen people complain that she didn't fuck up SB or whatever but I don't think that's what the scene was about. But that's just my opinion.

I think what would've made this better is if they gave a better reason for us to believe Soldier Boy was a greater threat (at that moment) than Homelander, like if not only did he want revenge on Payback but Vought as well for allowing his capture to happen. like maybe he would actively try to blow up the tower and kill a bunch of people out of pure spite. it wouldn't have been perfect, but it would at least create a more believable moral dilemma, which I think is what the writers were trying to go for but missed the mark.

My problem with the episode was that it wasn't logical going after Solider Boy over Homelander. Soldier boy can kill some innocent vought employees sure but Homelander can takeover the entire world if he wanted. Breaking Solider Boy out of capture to kill Homelander only to turn on him last minute and not go through with it felt like bad writing and an letdown for the finale for an otherwise incredible season. Especially since killing Homelander is Butcher's main motivation. I also wasn't a fan of the buildup and character development of Black Noir leading to a showdown with Solider Boy which I was excited about only for him to be killed off in such an underwhelming way. They didn't care at that moment, given that the _second_ biggest supes threat intended to m*rder gratuitously the 11-years old son of the leaders of both opposite factions. It was no longer a matter of taking down Evil Expy Superman, but having somebody crossing the line too far-- which is funny, given the context of whom are fighting him. Soldier Boy broke his promise by touching somebody else than Homelander, Butcher's legal son. Whom to Homelander, the line was when he was willing to not just get rid of him for justifiable reasons, but moreso against his own 11-years old grandson because he DON'T CARE.

I honestly think Noir’s death was kind of too soon/killed his arc. Also, he was able to take multiple strikes to the head from Soldier Boy’s shield, but yet I’m supposed to believe the slightly stronger Homelander could rip his guts out in a single punch? Pretty much my only problem with the season though. (And a minor one at that) The final fight was a lot better than I expected. Homelander constantly throwing highly telegraphed hook punches that the more experienced Maeve was able to counter and dodge around made for a great fight with a lot of weight behind it.

Every single thread is engaging and well written. Homelander’s spiralling mental state. Hughie’s battle with masculinity and being the weaker half of a relationship. Butchers backstory and his battle with repeating the past with Hughie. The A-Train/Blue Hawk commentary. The Deep’s public image crisis. Mothers Milk town between fatherhood and vengeance (he had a brilliant season). I’m even obsessed with Ashley’s costly rise to the top of the Vought tree and how she’s (not) coping. It’s a deep well of quality storytelling. So so good

honestly, the Kimiko scene fighting the guards RUIN her entire arc, and the entire arc of the season. I honestly really hated it.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who was annoyed by that scene. The show treats Hughie and Butcher as being morally wrong for stooping to Vought's level in order to beat them meanwhile they seemingly have no problems with Kimiko ruthlessly murdering guards while she enjoys it as well? Ok, I guess.

My only issue they never really showed much of maeves powers throughout the seasons . A lot of people say in her fight with homelander he held back and I agree up until she made his nose bleed . Maeve was second strongest of the 7 and held her own for a long time against homelander I’m glad she got a happy ending .

I think the best thing about Homelander is how human he is. He's an unambiguous evil piece of shit, but he is still so human. There are times when watching him where you might relate to a part of him. A part that you dont like about yourself, or an intrusive thought that might have crossed your mind once. He is all of those. Which makes the fact that he geniunely can feel love, or his outburst over ryan being attacked feel real. Hes so evil but because hes a twisted person

Honestly thought you would go in quite hard on this finale I actually found a lot of this finale to be a let down, and it may be due to the fact that we do not have season 4 context to help back the decisions made for this finale Black Noir; everyone's gripe. It felt so lackluster. His character had so much potential, and I hope they bring him back in season 4 Maeve - Her fakeout death was really irritating. It actually makes things confusing. If she survived Soldier Boy's detonation, how on earth would he have killed Homelander? Are we to assume Maeve is more powerful than Homelander? Because Butcher was under the assumption that Soldier Boy was to kill Homelander, not to just strip him of his powers (what happened to Maeve). Soldier Boy's detonation mcguffin needs to be explained more - how it works and what it does and why it killed supes at Herogasm but also doesn't kill some? Also Starlight was underutilised this season and spent the whole time whinging lol I loved this season but the finale really brought out these questions and i hope it doesn't jump shark and the writing doesn't get further bogged down and renewed for heaps more seasons because it's amazons cash cow

I personally think that the temp V subplot could have been handled better. Starlight never truly understood why Hughie took it in the first place. She’s been blessed with power her whole life while Hughie was always powerless, so of course he’s going to want to give back in the form of saving her when he can. Yes, he can still ultimately reject the V and realize she was right, but she needs to see his point of view as well. Something the show doesn’t get into, simply adopting a “you’re wrong and I’m right” without any grey area. Hughie has always been the guy who gets covered in guts and screams. Starlight was always the one with some level of control and power

4:25 you know, while I was watching them I totally felt the opposite way. The A-Train scene felt really good(from a writing/story perspective), a fitting death for his character at that moment. Meanwhile Black Noir's left me feeling cheated, I can't lie. If he's totally, completely dead, then I am officially dissatisfied with how they used his character. Definitely didn't want the horrible comic version, but this wasn't good enough either. Also, despite that I like her character, Maeve should be the deadest person in that world right now.

In the Comic, the concept of V Zombies is introduced so if I were to guess Black Noir will come back as one of them and will technically be a different character because all his personality will be gone and he won't even write or type to get his feelings across; Seems very Homelander to resurrect him as a literal Zombie that can't say no to him, especially given how much he valued his silent listening

He's still playing Noir. The actor we haven't seen yet (who is modern day noir) will play a a replacement Noir. So he's getting kind of recast as a second character but in universe is indistinguishable to the public. For the actor he is playing almost the same part but probably without the scars and damage, with a new backstory and personality.

Jethro is a narcissistic asshole and Van is a simple minded sweetheart who just wants to do the right thing (in their family's twisted way of doing things right), and it's an absolute pleasure to watch the nuance that he brings. And then later, he stars as an incredibly dynamic morally grey ex-con who stalls the identity of a small town sheriff in Banshee, and again, he's brilliant. Antony Starr is probably one of the best actors we've got on television in the past twenty years.

I need to rewatch the whole show because maybe Im wrong about this, but it kinda feels like Black Noir never really did anything in the story. So maybe he's how they'll introduce the V resurrection thing from the comics? Or maybe we'll find out that he already has undergone that process, he was kinda in a similar mental state to how resurrected characters are in the comic, so maybe he wont come back in the present but he'll continue to have some story relevance. IDK it'd feel weird to me if this is where his story ends.
