'The Boys' Showrunner Is A Hypocrite, And Shock Value Isn't That Interesting

The Boys has placed shock value over everything else including good storytelling, or even a coherent framework by which to navigate the show's satire. The latest episode 'Dirty Business' wasn't the show's most shocking, but it definitely reveals what hypocrites its creators are.

I always found 'If you don't like it, don't watch it!' a suspiciously generic argument to use. You could use it against _any_ criticism of pretty much anything, without having to know anything about what the criticism even is. Saying this suggests that someone has run out of relevant things to say. If it's a book: 'If you don't like it, don't read it!' If it's a TV show: 'If you don't like it, don't watch it!'

Slightly different context but this kind of reminds me of Thor's treatment in Endgame. The man had lost his entire family and just witnessed the death of his brother, his best friends, the genocide of his people and narrowly failed in saving half the universe from non existence. He's suffering from obvious trauma, depression and alcoholism but hey it's hilarious cause he's a fat gamer now 🙄 as someone with mental health issues this did not sit well and felt like a complete wasted opportunity.

Absolutely great comp. I thought Endgame was decent the first time I watched it, but I sort of hate it now because it sort of nerfed all the main characters. In addition to Thor, I don't find Tony's insistence on screwing everyone else to keep his daughter very endearing (might even be in character, but they don't play it like he's being selfish) and I also can't believe Cap would just quit by retiring to the past.

I just find it odd how male sexual assault is still treated as a joke in fiction but if it happens to a woman its always portrayed as horrific. Its abhorrent no matter the gender. Why is there still this double standard especially after something like Baby Reindeer comes out and shows its a serious issue. Its like how sexually objectifying men in entertainment is considered fine but god forbid you show some skin on a female character and the creator is labelled a misogynist who just appeals to "the male gaze" etc. Its the hypocrisy that kills me.

Thanks for your great analysis, as always. I really appreciate you pointing out the disturbing double standard in our culture regarding victims of SA. It's a challenge for most victims to come forward because there's still a lot of societal stigma - I worked at a crisis center, and SA remains one of the most difficult issues to handle. Many people have unconscious bias against victims--many victims themselves have this bias. When you add in the double standard regarding gender, it becomes even more complicated - our society expects women to be victims, not men, and this attitude disturbs me for both female and male survivors, as it invalidates their experiences in different ways.

This is why I love your reviews Eric. It’s honest, it’s fairly weighed, and always measured. It makes it easy to hear and understand your perspective. I thought the same thing as you about this last episode and having Hughie go through that. It was played for laughed but I just found myself being disturbed by it. It feels so weird to say that a satire about superheroes and “the right”, has become a “parody” of itself. If not for Butcher and Homelander, I couldn’t watch this show. Those performances do it wonders. However, similar to TWD, they are stretching story really thin when there just isn’t a lot there. Setting up new powers for butcher, and dragging out his hallucinations, the volleying of political theaterism between starlights and firecrackers campaigns, Hughie’s rushed storyline with his father and mother, the losing sight for 3-4 episodes of the exploding head version of Kamala Harris, etc. not to mention them saying that JDM was going to be tech knight but most definitely wasn’t, playing SA of Hughie for laughs, not addressing the stark change of looks for starlight and mothers milk… I don’t know. I agree that The Boys' shock value stuff this season has kind of jumped the shark. But I have to side with Kripke...to a point. As pointed out below, the attitudes of the other characters as not being worried about the stakes is all you need to know with how to take in the gravity of the situation. You're not. And while it's a valid discussion about whether there's absolutely NO context where sexual assault can be presented as humorous, the real hypocrisy is tut-tutting Kripke for this, when outright murder is constantly presented as humorous, not just in The Boys, but in almost any situation in any sort of movie. The bad guys getting killed is often the punchline of a joke. Arnold Schwartzenegger made a career off of death punchlines. If sexual assault jokes are grounds for making videos pointing out hypocrisy, then MURDER as anything but, well, murder is ten times worse. How about that hilarious sequence in Pulp Fiction in the car where the guy gets his head accidentally blown off? Is shooting someone in the head FUNNY? How insensitive is that to people who have been left widowed or orphaned by murder? Or their lives ruined by attempted murder? How about all the kids in schools who've been murdered? Let's start just calling out every murder in any movie or TV show that's presented as just disposable side characters being hilariously killed. Nazis killing and getting killed in Raiders of the Lost Ark is funny. Nazis killing in Schindler's List, not so much. The truth I'll agree with is that it's all getting very tired on The Boys. It's so tired that it's leading to unnecessary articles and videos like this that expand out that boredom with the gore to finding deeper sins. This was gore too far, but because I'm just bored with it. We've reached the limit of exactly how far The Boys can take this sort of aesthetic. I hope they are listening. But the one storytelling nitpick I'll offer up, is that you have Webweaver, a supe with a sticky hole in his back that emits gooey fluid... and he's invited to a sex dungeon by a guy whose whole deal is exploring new holes, or making new holes, and yet he doesn't immediately expose Hughie as a fraud by noticing Hughie doesn't have the web-shooter hole? That's a plot hole that Tek Knight would look at and need to go excuse himself over..
@shanebattistv2165
@shanebattistv2165 17 дней назад
Good take. Another thing that’s really sapped the drama for me is how The Boys don’t ever seem to be in danger anymore. In almost every episode they’re fighting a Supe with a half-baked plan and are fine every time. The only tense scenes now are in Vought tower where you really feel the pressure from Homelander against all the other employees and it’s great. I miss the early days when The Boys had to get creative to kill Translucent and were legitimately scared about being found by Homelander. This past episode Homelander sends Noir and Deep to their headquarters to kill them, which was nuts. They knew where to find them this whole time and didn’t consider taking an afternoon to go kill them? Most of the time the seven is just sitting around the tower most of the time anyway. Cool fight, but the circumstances were silly. Same problem with Neuman. Hughie throws acid in her first in episode one and she just lets it go? Why would you not immediately kill this group of people actively seeking out ways to kill you? This season should have started out with a plan going wrong and French or MM getting killed, setting the tone that they need to be smart and cautious to win.

This made me glad that Kripke was 1) reined in by the sole female writer in the SPN writing room to prevent non-con issues of the male protagonist being played for laughs and 2) he was fired from SPN as showrunner after season 5 and ten years later SPN ended with a good bittersweet finale. Kripke admitted he would have ended SPN on a much darker tone that would have likely killed its rewatch value like how the original season 5 finale was written had it not been renewed.

You have to remember though that in the context of the situation none of it is sexual assault. The entire premise is that Webweaver has been contacted by Tek Knight as a potential "sidekick" candidate (i.e., entering into a consensual dom/sub relationship), with all the kink that that position apparently entails. Webweaver is established earlier to be sexually promiscuous and willing to do anything, laying the groundwork for that. Therefore, during the dungeon scenes, Tek Knight and Ashley have no idea that their unorthodox sex play is being visited upon an unwilling participant up until when Hughie is finally busted.

Even if I take out the “way too much on the nose jabs at the far right now” of the equation, the season has still big storytelling issues anyway. Too many storylines that kinda go nowhere and/or are resolved too quickly and the season doesn’t have a clear vision of what the overarch is. Characters do stuff and random crazy/gory things happen because “plot”, but there’s no development, no depth, no real friendship or banters between them. They shat the bed early with a few key changes from the comic that just make no sense, but they kept enough of the intent to make it work, especially given a handful of stellar performances. The problem they've had is the changes are increasingly nonsensical and pointless, and the not only is the shock value so much less than in the books, it also has no underlying point, which it always had in the books. The Tek-Knight they've given us in the show is just a pathetic pervert, and a pitiful downgrade of what he actually was in the comic, which was equal parts hilarious and tragic. You made solid points here and in your article about "what if it was Starlight?" and while I also thought that it was crazy that they played the entire sequence for laughs, I think what most surprised me was the sort of bait and switch when Huey broke down afterwards. I honestly thought they were going to address how messed up it was, but then they turned it into "oh, he's only upset about his dad." It is too bad because I also agreed with your assessment that the show was getting a bit better. It is very strange though how they waited until halfway into the season to bring in the virus arc (and assuming everyone watched Generation V). Actually introducing that earlier could have focused the first three episodes that seemed super meandering. Last point too, I agree with you about the show being in decline for awhile, but I don't really feel like this season was a sharp drop off, just a continued steady fall off. But that might just be because I really hated the temporary V stuff in season 3. It completely defeated the original pitch of the show, normal humans trying to defeat egotistical crazy supes.

And the fact the showrunner described the hughie scene as "Hilarious" is disgusting and his incredibly childish response of "If you dont like it dont watch it" which is similar to when a child puts there fingers in there ears and go "Lalala I'm not listening"

Got banned from the boys reddit because I pointed out how SA on men is the same thing as SA on women. But apparently it isnt the case... soooo yeah. also, the show would have been better had they not strayed this far from the original content. also finally, this wouldnt have upsetted me this much, but the attitude of the showrunner of the boys towards male SA is a good example of why men keep all the pain and distress to themselves and end up taking their lives, way more, then women. CDC 2022: In 2022, men died by suicide 3.85 times more than women. White males accounted for 68.46% of suicide deaths in 2022.

I completely agree. I know it’s part of the boys DNA to have these shock scenes but they felt more natural in the flow of the show in previous season. I’m not the biggest fan of shock value crap but I know it’s always going to be part of this but at this point I agree, it seems lazy writing is now just ‘let’s add in a supe doing an ATM human centipede like why? Why do they all need kinks you’re so right. This show is definitely spinning its wheels and couldn’t agree more about Frenchie and MM. GoT has trained us audiences these days that there are actual stakes and things happen when they should. Why these two are still alive is beyond me, even hughie and starlight can go, they’re also both just dull and boring. All these characters are bumbling fools and always get saved. I’m basically only interested in the story with Butcher and Homelander

I read your Forbes article on it and it was spot on. The response you got on X was a bit perplexing but that seems to be a minority. Everyone I know who loved this show, including myself here, have struggled to get through this season. The slow plot is the main reason but the shock value has taken the lead, is overtly politicised and is coming more frequently than the jokes in Airplane. The show is a parody of the first season now and you calling it out has been both honest and well articulated. It's very bizarre how the Batman being a fascist stuff (or just criticising him in general rather than spinning an alternative version of him) is slipping into projects such as this, The Flash, Titans and even Blue Beetle without any degree of quality control, or without the realisation that it's both untrue (or at least unlikely and up for debate) and winding up regular fans.

Tek Knight has always had a kink for holes. his superpower (extremely enhanced senses which is why he's such a good detective) comes from a brain tumor which makes him a masochist and a sadist basically as well as making him want to engage in sexual relations with any object possible. Even in the comics, although Tek Knight didn't have powers, he still as the tumor which does the same thing as in the show. It's still a terrible and weird scene and they handled it very bad. I didnt mind it that much as Huey was impersonating someone who would have been a consenting partaker, to follow through with the ruse. Though I do agree that Erin Kripke personality is shinning through more and more and the quality of the show is suffering because of it. I dont mind satire that is relevant to the world, like Homelander and Trumps parallels. But alot of it feels forced and shoe horned in, ala the abortion issue that has nothing to do with the world of superheroes. It just kills the verisimilitude of the world and makes you think of the writers room patting themselves on the back and just smelling their own farts instead of focusing on good story.

Kripke objectively made Tek Knight more reprehensible and less sympathetic than Garth Ennis did. And yes, misandry is normal, more at eleven.

I was of two minds about that scene. The first was that, as the scene began, I was a little uncomfortable with how this was predictably going to go down. And indeed, throughout I had this discomfort: both in what was taking place specifically, and in how I noticed kink generally was being portrayed to an audience, which I thought was frankly tired and uncreative. The other sense was that it was really being played for laughs, and its comedy didn't entirely fail for me. To the extent that the show depicts one assault as exactly that, with a certain intent and tone and acknowledging of ramifications, I could tell that fundamentally this scene was meant as nothing more than a gag- no pun intended. In other words, Hughie, like a cartoon character, would get blown up and still be fine, while this was not true of Starlight, treated as human and vulnerable. And for the scene, I was willing to go halfway with it. It definitely wasn't hilarious as Kripke thinks, and it was weird, but it did get some laughs from me. I don't think this kind of scene is worth it if it isn't absolutely hilarious, so the scene wasn't worth it. And it seems to expose something badly askew about what Kripke and the writers think of vulnerability, and of the responsibility they have as storytellers to depict it right. Jennifer Maas was hitting the right notes in her questions, calling it a sexual assault and saying surely this is kicking a character while they're down, and asking if the trauma will be given its due attention. Kripke's apparent bemusement that one would even think of it that way is most telling.

Yep. You've brought some points I wrote somewhere else. It's yet another example of double standards. This show has become so heavily political and preachy, it's no longer fun to watch. All is happening basically only to piss, shock and disgust people, but at the expense of actually good writing. I'm not even being made fun of most of the time, but still entirely understand why the right is especially pissed off. It's not a good business move to piss a half of your paying audience and basically telling them how dumb they are only for different beliefs and politics... It used to be more subtle, more balanced and actually even thought provoking at times... Gen V was so much better, that I don't entirely understand this shift in writing, when it's not even that far apart from each other and it must have been written around the same time. I don't get this trend of telling people to f off, either... Just write good stories that everybody can enjoy and "problem" solved.

I’d argue that all the sexual deviancy has a point. Super powered individuals get psychopathic because they are prevented from seeing non-powered people as humans.
