It's pretty interesting that Bobby said that Greg would be an example to the whole neighborhood to see. Greg proved to be an example, all right. He proved to be an example of why no one should ever purchase that product!
If you look very closely at 2:38 - Bobby goes to grab for the towel and you can see the top of Greg's head - his hair is still dark. lol It was the next shot that had the wig.
@@KRACKERJACK6913 It did but you weren't supposed see Greg's hair. It would have been turning orange. They stopped tape, Barry put on the wig and towel, then started again.
Robert Reed called it Batman in the operating room when he read the script for this episode and his last word in the memo to Sherwood Schwartz? "I can't play that!"
At that time, nobody knew this episode WOULD be the last. It was cancelled. Sherwood Schwartz did say, however that had the show gone on another year, he would've killed off Mike Brady
@Brian Hess Reed also didn't think someone Bobby's age would genuinely be interested in selling hair tonic... seemed dated, like the 50s. Still, you have to admit that the tonic getting onto some white rabbits and passing them off as orange and white is quite silly. Also, in terms of doing the reunion shows, Reed did love the cast, and enjoyed working with them, so that was the main motivation of coming back, and he did love doing the variety hour because he saw it as a chance to sing and dance professionally, which he hadn't done before. As for the Bradys getting married, he said he felt that HE needed to give the brides away, not some other actor.
@@whewfan Add to that the reunion shows were more dramatic than the original show, something Robert Reed had been fighting for throughout the original run.
@@thefurrybastard1964 The Bradys was an attempt to do a more dramatic take on the show. Reed acknowledged that some of it worked, but a lot of it didn't. He felt the show would've been better as a continuing series rather than a different story line for each show. (For example, taking more than one episode to resolve Marcia's drinking problem or Bobby's accident that left him in a wheelchair (I had wondered if Lookinland was in an accident in real life and really needed a wheelchair, but no... that was for the show.) Even behind the scenes, the original Brady cast was mocking some of the storylines.
He didn't want any part of the episode because he thought it was poorly written and that the storyline was ridiculous. As soon as Robert Reed read the script, he didn't want any part of it, so he wrote a memo on why he wouldn't do the show.
I remember watching that episode. Mr. Brady refused to be in it because he thought that the story line was stupid. I remember an old girlfriend of mine tried to color her hair on her own, and she said it turned yellow. I know that was only hair tonic used on Greg. Also that was the last episode.
@@Kat.Evangeline14 She didn't go into much detail about it, but when she told me that her hair turned yellow, All she said was that she was so embarrassed. She said she never did that again.
They didn’t have perms. That’s what naturally curly hair does when you hit puberty. Barry said in his book, “I have never, ever permed my hair. I turned 16, and my hair went insane.” Just bizarre that Chris Knight’s did the exact same thing. Robert Reed’s had to have been a perm. Even with a studio hair department, his hair before never looked that wavy.
Never understood why Robert Reed thought this episode was so ridiculous that he sat out what turned out to be the Series finale of the show,, Bobby accidentally turning Greg's hair Orange seemed completely plausible as something that could happen to me (To bad Google wasn't around back in the 70's) what was implausible was Father of the Year Mike Brady being away on a business trip and not showing up for his eldest Son's graduation from high school - maybe Reed should have thought how that was gonna look to Generations of people still watching and discovering The Brady Bunch 45 years later.
It was typically outdated Sherwood Schwartz writing like the Shirley Temple thing, but even so, I don’t see anything so offensive that would have warranted Robert Reed to have a tantrum, as long as Barry was okay with it. Maybe Barry was just glad to get a story.
Yes you can.It was no different from any of the other wild stories. Reed was just being difficult as he often could be. Kind of fitting he wasnt in the last episode. He was probably glad to be done with that series but ironically came back to do the awful varity show and movies.Must have needed the money.
@@ravenel2 I agree that Shirley Temple was outdated for a show in the early 1970s. It would be like a sitcom today using a famous child star from the 1970s or 80s. But the hair tonic thing and the changing of the hair, to me that's pretty funny. I don't understand why Robert Reed didn't want to do the episode. It's rare people want a serious sitcom. I never cared for Patridge Family, the other 60s/70s family sitcom show that was more serious, more adult.
Don't worry Greg. Comb your hair right and get some hazel contacts, wear an Ouran Host Club uniform and Greg would look like either Hikaru or Kaoru. Greg would get a lot of fangirls that way. Now he just needs a twin.
@@sha11235 When I was in 9th grade, back then junior high school was grades 7-9. Now, at where I live, it's called middle school. Grades 6-8. I am glad it wasn't like that when I in school.
For real, Greg looks like he's a 23 year old man and Peter looks like he's already a 16 year old high school kid, but Greg treats him like he's 13 or 14.
@@John-ct9zs I saw in a book about the cast, Greg ( Barry Williams) was born in 1954 and Christopher Knight (Peter), was born in 1957. The show was cancelled in 1974 so Greg was already 20 and Peter would have been 17 at the time. Greg did treat Peter like he was only 12 or 13. You are correct about that. Thanks 👍.
Robert Reed does not appear in this episode, due to dispute over the story involving the non-FDA approved bottle of hair tonic, which he thought was inane slapstick. After Reed wrote a large memo to the staff and Paramount, Sherwood Schwartz wrote him out of the episode.
It's so hard to believe that this was the Episode that Robert Reed wanted nothing to do with and this was The "Last Episode". They were being trumpled in the Ratings to "Sanford & Son" based on the UK Sitcom "Steptoe & Son". When they came home after Greg's Graduation, Robert Reed was watching from a distance absolutely disgusted. I was stunned at Barry Williams Book "Growing Up Brady I Was A Teenage Greg".
There was another episode the Reed wasn't in. I think it was season 4's Goodbye Alice, Hello. For the record, Florence Henderson, Barry Williams, and Ann B. Davis were the only three cat members to be in every episode.
That was so funny goes to show you about untried and products that haven't been fully and completely checked for quality and serviced for the market sales I bet Greg Brady really didn't expect that I bet you he'll be more careful next time when purchasing a product like that love Anthony Fed ex lol
Freeze the video at 1:45 and you'll see Greg break the fourth wall by looking directly at the camera and gave the eye roll and cheesy grin as he had to give Bobby the second dollar 😂!
I love the Brady Bunch and am a huge fan. I liked all of the shows, but I didn't care for this one. I can see why Robert Reed decided not to do this episode. In fact in the book Growing Up Brady, Robert Reed's memo for this episode speaks for itself.
Sherwood Schwartz used the same idea years earlier in an episode of Gilligan’s Island. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jAgPgtJdLCU.html
Yes but what i dont understand is if Robert Reed thought Brady Bunch was so goofy why did he participate in the brady brides, brady christmas &The Brady Bunch hour show where they did the singing and dancing?
It wasn’t his story, it was Barry’s. He had no right to throw a tantrum and refuse to be in it if Barry was okay with it. It didn’t affect Robert Reed in the slightest, so he shouldn’t have been such a poor sport about it if Barry and Michael just wanted the work.
Most of the episodes were stand alone and not really cannon with the others. However, in this case, Bobby DID know what would happen. This was his way of getting even with Greg for that UFO prank he pulled on him amd Peter a few short weeks before. This is also the only episode where Greg loses his temper when getting mad. The other timed he got mad he kept his temper in check
Robert Reed refused to appear in this episode because he was angry at the script writers for passing off hair tonic, which went out of style twenty years ago, as something in current popular demand.
Wasn't Greg's bed and stuff supposed to be up in the attic at this point? Why were the bunk beds still intact and there was still a 3rd bed in the room? Maybe for cousin Oliver???
This wouldnt have been a bad scene if there was time between the application of tonic and color change. Other than that, I think Robert Reid had too much of an ego. He repudiated the very thing about the show that the public enjoyed.
