This is the perfect video for someone like me. I have been looking around the RU-vid world for ideas on my future setup and I just keep seeing setup's that have like $20k worth of Ubiquiti gear with like hundreds of dollars worth of LED's on the rack. I'm glad to see more brands, options and ideas being shown to the every day Joe like myself. Thanks for the upload.

Hello, the Synology has the auto power on when supply issue is fixed You will find it into, settings, Hardware and power When this function is enabled, the system will boot up automatically after getting power source supply if the system shuts down abnormally because of power failure. Enable Power Recovery function Ticking the box brings the unit back online following a power outage.

Unless the ISP modem has mGig ports it wouldn’t make a difference. The modem ports and WAN bandwidth will be the bottleneck to 1Gbps. Connections to local services like the NAS will be via the switch so the only way to get >1Gbps to those services is to upgrade the switch to mGig. The only traffic which will get >1Gbps is what’s only travelling over Wi-Fi (ac or ax) and there aren’t many real life situations when this would happen.

@kamikazejs950
@kamikazejs950 Год назад
I can't believe that nobody has commented about the rack being hung out from the drywall using those toggle bolts, with no studs or other reinforcement. This is terrible advice that NO manufacturer or network tech would support. Yes, most drywall can support decent loads but only in VERTICAL force (like from a picture or mirror). That big heavy rack is a cantilevered load that will also apply a large amount of TENSION to those toggle bolts, SHEARING the drywall, and rip them right out, damaging the wall and especially all the equipment in your rack. Drywall is not strong under forces perpendicular to the surface, and it's brittle so it slowly cracks and crumbles over time before ultimate failure without warning. It may not happen today or tomorrow, but one day it will either rip out on its own or when you pull on it while working in there. The rack manufacturer will probably tell you that the warranty is void because of improper installation. If you want to mount to that back wall and really have no studs, I'd recommend building some framing with 2x4's to go back there and take them all the way to the sides and floor. You could also put a thick sheet of plywood back there, and attach that to the drywall at more places to spread the load. Either way, try to anchor that to a stud on the side walls or overhead. A couple of hours of doing this will save you from days of fixing everything and hundreds or thousands of dollars in damage.

You are brave, tackling a rat nest that works. I need to work up that courage. 😄 I’d love to see the difference in speed test with the back haul cable unplugged!
@ShaneCreates
@ShaneCreates Год назад
It's pretty insane tbh. I tested that out when I first installed it. Using the new Orbi WiFi6E, with a WIRELESS backhaul, I still got faster speeds than my previous router, with a WIRED backhaul. Thanks for watching! It really depends on what you are using. In theory, HomeKit runs locally so all your smart home automations, etc should still be able to run even without wifi.

There is an option in Synology to turn on after power is restored but cool device.

Did you have any issues connecting your Aqara hub to the Orbi router? I have an older Orbi mesh router and was not able to connect an Aqara hub, since the Orbi app doesn’t support splitting the 2.4 GHz and the 5 GHz bands.

No issues for me.

You just need to use color coordinated network cables and a shelf for a UPS backup to keep your comms gear up

Yep, still have some work to do. I do plan to add a UPS.

Do you have an increased risk of encountering broadcast storm issues when using two switches (if you use your old 8-port switch)?
@UltralifeTech
@UltralifeTech Год назад
As long as you don’t plug in a loop, it’s good. Many larger companies use multiple switches. Also, many smart switches support Spanning Tree Protocol, which can detect (and block) a broadcast storm.

I’ve seen people use STP as a way of redundancy. Purposely cause a STP block with two connections. If one cable is disconnected, the other will take over

I put my network equipment like dvr, nas, managed switch, ups, my main pc in my room except isp modem. Don't worry about fan noise because I like it. Have no where to put in my house(for security reason).

Hey Shane been watching you videos for sometime now as I am in the process of building a new house. One question, you added the switch bot to your server that i thought has hoobs running to allow the switch bot to work. If that is the case then how are you going to use the switch bot to turn the server back on? By the way LOVE the set up!!!!!
@ShaneCreates
@ShaneCreates Год назад
Thanks Brian! Well, two things... first I've discovered that there is a power on/loss setting that I can change in the Synology settings that I didn't know about (thanks to helpful RU-vid comments on this video). So I don't even need the switchbot there anymore. Secondly, if I did, I would have had to use the SwitchBot app in order to power back on the Synology once power was restored... because yes, my HomeBridge setup is running on the Synology.

@@ShaneCreates Ah, yeah that makes all the sense in the world, I did not understand Switch Bot had an native iOS app. I was thinking it was only running through Hoops. Thanks clearing that up for me. Hey video topics suggestion. I am fixing to move out my current house and into the new one that is being built right now. What is the easiest way to move (or transfer to new owner) all your HomeKit devices after selling your house. I can not find anything information on this topic….. keep up the great work

Hey Shane I really enjoy your videos! But I need some clarification, are the Orbi mesh routers compatible with HomeKit? I have been reading that they are not. Are you doing a work around(I’m still watching the video).
@ShaneCreates
@ShaneCreates Год назад
Hi Diane, thanks for watching! No, they do not support HomeKit. The only routers that do currently I think are some of the ones by Eero and Linksys. HomeKit support has never been a big priority for my routers, so I don't mind this personally.

Structured wiring panels are just not large enough, or put in the best location in most new homes. The home we are currently building it is in the garage so I will have to run all my hubs, etc. from my office which is more centrally located in the home.

I do suggest everyone get a WiFi mesh system. They are costly but no more headaches. This a nice house I would not get this Netgear trash but either TP-Link Omada gear or Ubiquit gear.
