The Constitutionalist Revolution of 1932, also known as the Paulista War or Brazilian Civil War, was a major uprising in Brazil against the government of President Getúlio Vargas. It erupted primarily in the state of São Paulo, although it garnered support from other regions as well. The roots of the conflict lay in the dissatisfaction of the Paulista elites and middle class with Vargas' authoritarian rule, which they saw as a threat to democratic principles and state autonomy. The trigger for the revolution was Vargas' dissolution of the Brazilian Congress and imposition of an authoritarian regime in 1930. São Paulo, the wealthiest and most industrialized state, felt marginalized by Vargas' policies, which favored the rural states and centralized power in Rio de Janeiro. The Paulistas demanded the reinstatement of constitutional rule and greater autonomy for São Paulo. On July 9, 1932, the revolution began with the uprising of the military and civilian population in São Paulo. The rebels quickly seized control of the state and established a provisional government. They aimed to overthrow Vargas and restore constitutional democracy. However, the uprising faced significant challenges, including the superior military strength of the federal government and a lack of support from other states. Despite fierce resistance, the Paulistas struggled to maintain momentum. The federal forces, led by Vargas, launched a brutal crackdown on the rebellion. The conflict lasted for three months, resulting in thousands of casualties on both sides. Ultimately, the federal government emerged victorious, and Vargas remained in power. Although the revolution was militarily defeated, it had lasting effects on Brazilian politics. It highlighted the deep-seated regional divisions within the country and contributed to the eventual democratization of Brazil. The Constitutionalist Revolution of 1932 remains a significant event in Brazilian history, symbolizing the struggle for democracy and regional autonomy.

This is the best video I saw made by a foreigner about the civil war, congratulations. A few things to be said is that we had two prior wars with air bombardment, the contestado war and the civil war of 1924. The copacabana revolt happened in the copabacabana fort along with the copacabana beach, minor nitpick, you didnt get it wrong, most of it was in the beach. Now, there was a cult made by the neoliberal PSDB party in Sao Paulo, going as far as to make the 1932 civil war a state holiday recently, in 1997. This cult is a lighter version of the CSA lost cause myth and it tends to put Sao Paulo as the "democratic vanguard" for Brazil instead of a decrepit oligarchic power grab. One of the main reasons why this is wrong is because Vargas had accepted to do the new constitution before the civil war was launched, but the oligarchs wanted it to happen in THEIR therms, not on federal ones.

Hi from Brazil. My great uncle, my grandmother’s brother, fought with the paulistas and had to hide in the state of Mato Grosso for years after the defeat, fleeing Felinto Müller’s police torturers. My grandmother’s family came to Brazil ater the CSA defeat in the American Civil War, and helped found the cities of Americana and Santa Barbara do Oeste in the state of São Paulo. Coincidentally, Washington Luiz’s farm neighbored my great grandfather’s and both families were friends. My great uncle’s tomb at the Americana Confederate Cemetery became famous for his epitaph: “Once a rebel, twice a rebel, always a rebel”.

The Constitucionalist revolution is more know to the older generation of paulistas, especially those from the interior. As you said in the vídeo all the battles were fought in the interior rural areas, while the true political conflict was in the city of Rio and São Paulo. This conflict shaped the Vargas regim to be more open to democratic principals and resulted in him delaying his dictadorship of the Estado Novo (1937). Was not for this war maybe Brasil could have fallen into a aliance with germany in the second world war, but Vargas chose to remain neutral because he knew the paulistas would rebel if he joined the Axis. Great vídeo Thanks for sharing !

Oh, no, this is propaganda. The civil war was made exactly because Vargas was going to do a new constitution. The constitutionalist rebels wanted to take power BEFORE it could happen since Vargas was going to make a new progressive federal constitution and this would ruin their hold over the nation that those oligarchs enjoyed since 1891. 1932 was a last grasp of a dying political system that had enslaved Sao Paulo and Brazil for ages, and as a Paulista I'm extremely grateful that if failed since a success could end with Brazil becoming communist or fascist down the line. Vargas would never join the axis, he was a pro USA dictator and was criticezed for being an US asset in Latam.

I live in the very south of Minas Gerais, almost on the border with the state of São Paulo and my grandfather, who lived at that time, born in 1925, still tells me today, at the age of 99, about the civil war, about how a plane from a A local farmer, a Waco RNF flew over the city he lived in, Itanhandu, with several notes warning that the São Paulo army was invading our state (Minas Gerais) across the border in the city of Passa Quatro. He also says that they all went, in ox carts, milk carts and on donkeys/horses, to the rural area, to hide in farms and places close to the Serra da Mantiqueira. The video is very interesting and intriguing how a story can seem so old but so recent at the same time.

That's an absurd statement. São Paulo was already the biggest Latin American industrial park before Vargas rose to power (1930), and was already the proven center of Brazilian economy since, at least, the 1920 Census. It's true Vargas reshaped brazilian economy to follow a state-sponsored industrilization path, but to say he was the main factor São Paulo was industrialized is plain wrong.

Well done! Your work is very well founded. and I have to say that you interpreted the nuances of this story well. In fact, the São Paulo people lost but managed to hinder Vargas' totalitarian and fascist project, who only managed to impose the Estado Novo regime in 1937, and in 1945 he was deposed after strong diplomatic pressure from the USA.

3:40 One small correction, the transition from Empire to Republic did not mantain social and economic continuity. The newly found Republic was a military dictatorship, and instated censorship to the press. While the Empire had democratic elections and almost none press censorship. The biggest change, however, is in the social aspect. The Republic was founded by a coup, and this coup took huge inspirations from positivism. You can see that to this day in our national flag, with the slogan "Order and Progress". Meanwhile, the Empire did not pursue these ideals. On the economic regard, there was also a huge difference, in the Empire the country was slowly industrializing and modernizing, which was disliked by the Coffee Barons, which would sponsor the regime change from Empire to Republic. The new republic had the intentions to keep the modernization and industrialization proccesses going, but the influence of the Barons made their attempts futile.

I grew up in the São Paulo city of Itararé, mentioned in the video. Its a small town on the border of states and there is a tiny museum showing some its history. Also the battle took place in a ridge that divides both states of São Paulo and Paraná, called "Gruta da Barreira" or "Barrier Cave" - that place is a historical-natural conservation park nowadays.

Hi from Brazil !! Thanks a lot for studying our History !!! Just as information, the Sao Paulo industry built tanks with flame-throwers and also built 4 armored trains, nicknamed as "Death's Ghost" / Fantasma da morte in Portuguese (original militar names was TB-1 to TB-4, with 3 armored cars on each steam locomotive) that operated throughout the Vale of paraiba region. Unfortunately, after the conflict, the Federal Government ordered the scrapping of these trains !

In brazil we had many civil wars like the farroupilha revolution. And revolutions of 1893 (federalist war) and 1923 (revolution of freedom) but these two revolutions were fought inside the state of rio grande do sul (my state) and were fought for deciding the governor these two killed more than the revolution of 32. But they didnt had the use of war trains, tanks and airplanes(we made a small use of airplanes in 1923 but almost nothing) these two revolutions were fought using some tatics like cutting the troat of prisioners and using lances and cavalary charges. My two great great grandparents fought in this revolution one of them was colonel and the other a captain of the brigada militar.

Vargas was held with great prestige in São Paulo when he took the government for himself, as a sign of change. But in the coming years he abolished the constitution & governed under temporary laws, basically trying to perpetrate his government. When São Paulo started to riot, he promised that he would not elect an outsider governor, nor a military one in order to please the population, but did the oposite, naming a general from Pernambuco. This enfuriated the population, who took the streets where 4 students were shot and killed, becaming the martyrs for the revolution (M.M.D.C, or Martins, Miragaia, Drausio & Camargo). That's why the Paulistas were called "constitutionalists", because they were fighting not only for the state of São Paulo, but also for a written constition! And many volunteers came to help, that's why you can find many graves of solderis from different states at the obelisk!

What are you talking about? He just pronounced Portuguese as if it was Spanish throughout the video, as seen by "Retúliô" and "Itararê". This is an irrelevant nitpick since this is a history channel as opposed to a linguistics one, but please realize that the only reason some people in Rio Grande do Sul pronounce their state's name like that is because it was settled by Spaniards first.

A great example of how education is deliberately outdated. I remember always seeing classes of the Constitutionalist Revolution as well as other events in high school and elementary school classes, but they don't convey its meaning. I only learned about the importance of this event years later on memory preservation pages on social media. We, as Brazilians, have the chance to take the Constitutionalist Revolution as a legitimately Brazilian political event, which supported respect for regional autonomies and serves as inspiration for the search for decentralization, something so vital and disrespected in Brazil. Unsurprisingly, years later, like any despot, Vargas would take the State for himself. Anyway, thank you very much to the channel owner for this video!!

São Paulo needs to separate from Brazil. We live in a dictatorship disguised as a federative pact where Brasilia consumes all the money raised by us. For every 10 dollars that São Paulo sends to the federal government, only 1 dollar is returned. With the tax money from Paulistas we have to support politicians, judges and people from other states who don't want to work and live on government benefits. If São Paulo is independent we will be a first world country, but we live in a dictatorship disguised as a federative pact where all our taxes are diverted to corruption.
