A man takes his sons to live on a beach.
THE BREAK is used with permission from Ken Williams and Denis Fitzpatrick. Learn more at cometostanleys.com.
Tim lives in a tent on the beach with his two young sons. At first it appears to be an extended sort of vacation, but the truth is that he and his family have been hit hard by the recession in Ireland.
Housing prices have collapsed, banks can't be trusted and the country's Celtic Tiger economic boom has come to a screeching a halt. Temporary homelessness saves them some money. But Tim's seemingly simple, practical solution to his financial quandary isn't as simple as it seems, and everyday life, with its lack of privacy or stability, is not easy.
Directors Ken Williams and Denis Fitzpatrick, with a script by Williams, have crafted a gently resonant look at a family man and father at the end of his tether, trying to keep himself solvent and his family together, all while grappling with his own painful sense of failure and insecurity.
Taking place mostly on a beach, the film takes much of its visual aesthetic cues from the setting, which is gently sun-soaked and even bucolic in its way. The dramatic circumstances are revealed slowly, as are the relationships and characters of Tim and his young sons. Like the characters, the opening of the story has an improvised, shambolic feel, with an offhand ease in the beautiful cinematography and editing.
But as the story progresses and we see the strain the family is under -- even as they do their best to hide. it from one another -- the story gently grows more somber and contemplative, mirroring Tim's growing sense of quiet desperation.
Actor Ronan Leahy offers a layered, dimensional portrait of a loving dad trying to present a sense of confidence and normalcy, while still wrestling with his private worries. His young teenage son, Sean -- played by rising Irish actor Barry Keoghan of DUNKIRK -- maintains his own stoic facade. The youngest boy, Scott, played with great naturalness by young performer Jacob Lea, goes along with it all, asking funnily impertinent questions and making the best of circumstances.
But eventually Tim knows he can't go on living in a tent, pretending he's on a break from work and life. He doesn't have a solution, though, and when he hits his lowest point -- and is hit with a slur by some in the beachside community he takes refuge in -- he realizes he can't pretend towards normalcy anymore, at least not to himself.
But Tim gets some help from a surprising source, in the form of gently offered compassion and kindness. The acceptance he's shown gives him the space to be honest with himself and how he genuinely feels: frustration, anger, sadness and failure. In that honesty, the family truly comes together, earning THE BREAK its catharsis and ultimately its heartwarming ending. It's not a new home, or a change in external circumstance, but something much more genuine, emotional and heartfelt.

The hardest part about poverty isn't the lack of sufficient food and shelter, it's the stigma you have to live with from people thinking you're trash and worthless. Anyone at any time could be this. It's a harsh reality of the world we live in.

I don't think anyone is trash. But I understand that when someone lives their life treating themselves like worthless trash, it's not surprising when people close to them begin to see it that way as well?

For me food and shelter would definitely have priority over society. Only when my basic needs are satisfied would I perhaps worry about other things, though even then opinions of other people are pretty low on my list of necessities.

I was homeless, living on a beach one time. I had hit rock bottom, lost all my friends, was in the middle of the economy depression, had just finished a divorce. I didn’t want to talk to nobody, including family. I ended up eating from the trash and selling plastic bottles and cans. I’m in a better place today, with the difference that I know it’s not that hard to hit bottom, all you need is a couple of mishaps in life to brake your will.

@rick munoz I've read that this is actually a hard-wired way of thinking in people. We're scared of things in our lives that we can't control. And to ease that fear, we automatically asume that people who aren't doing very well, have caused it themselves. Otherwise we'd have to accept that it could happen to us too.
@scentlessapprentice88
@scentlessapprentice88 3 года назад
Course and the sooner people stop lying to themselves and accept that could happen, the better chance they have of it never happening. Been there myself. Yes some are just dealt crap hand after crap hand in life however alot is due to mental health issues.I mean by this not a fault of they're own, just undiagnosed and or untreated mental issues which makes them in theyre own mental place, unable to function like a 9-5 person. Then the other half of that is addiction, again alot didn't start out that way but sure ended up with a nasty addiction to show for they're efforts. It is sad. I dont ever judge anyone and I always try to pay it forward when I see someone who needs spare sheckles.. Because your right..majority of us are one single paycheck away from it.

@@scentlessapprentice88 glad that you succeeded in lifting yourself out of that hard situation. Since I've became an adult, I started having a real fear of ending up without a place and in trouble. And taking to other women, I found out I'm not the only one who thinks this way. Although, some say, you got friends, family and are doing well, you shouldn't think like that. But, once I encountered a hard time period. Bad depression, substance, etc. And, sooo quickly I saw how the my whole world turned against me, super fast. Friends I could have sworn by, friends I've helped many times, turned their backs away. This really scared me, and till now, I can't trust anyone with friendship. The word friend has a completely different meaning now. Only people who stood by me through all of it was my family. After they are gone, I'm on my own,& can't afford to mess up again. And I'm very scared.

I’ve often seen stories like these but I’ve never encountered a homeless family. When we moved downtown, renovating a house that hadn’t been touched in years, a man would show up within 5 minutes of our getting here. I always wondered how he knew. I even remembered meeting him once before, in the other side of town, while going out to dinner and giving him money. Anyway, he always asked for a smoke and then would begin a long, rambling story that ended in needing just a couple more bucks to accomplish some task. Our neighbor had many get together before COVID where he would show up and make the rounds through everyone. We couldn’t meet anyone outside without him coming up. Our neighbor finally offered and gave him a good amount of money to help him in the yard. He left and didn’t show back up for a few days and only showed up to ask for more money. I realize it’s hard to get help because I’ve tried to help family members with issues. It’s impossible when they don’t want help. I don’t know what the answer is but it starts to feel bad to be taken advantage of. Especially when helping one man makes a couple more show up. You finally have to say no.

The ending while not exactly 'sad', it does suggest some future hope for this family. But what stood out to me in the film? The way people will see you at your very lowest: without a home, a job, money, safety, food for yourself and your children....and yet, they'll still find a way to kick you when you're down. As if the struggle to simply survive that envelops you is simply not enough. 'Let's see if we can make it a little worse. Let's reduce that infinitesimally tiny bit of self-esteem to invisibility.' Human beings can be astonishingly cruel to one another. sad.

Loved your film. Sometimes it really does end well in life. Not always but sometimes. I've seen both good and bad endings in life. Mostly good for myself but I've seen it go bad for some. Sometimes when it seems all hope is lost, a small kindness is all that's needed to turn it around. Very well made film, well acted. Well written. And thankfully a good end.

I know that it is to be homeless and to be looked down on. Where I come from the a large majority of the homeless didn't look homeless and still got treated like crap. How can people rise up, when society looks down on them. People simply have to treat people better.

I was homeless for about 5 years, living out of a storage building and bathing at the gym. It was freeing but thats what happens when you pay childsupport and can't afford rent, even before inflation...lol Had a friend finally offer me his small seperate garage to a business building. Set up a tent and had a safe space to park at night and slept so well knowing no one was going to mess with me in the middle of the night.

I've seen quite a few news stories where a reporter will film a man standing on a corner with a cardboard sign asking for donations because he's a homeless Vet with Cancer he obtain in Afghanistan breathing Army supplied chemical agents used on insurgents and only has six months to live. Then the reporter and film crew capture him getting into a car that pulled up. The car either takes him to another busy intersection where the donations are better or it takes him to a nice house. Or the many stories of people asking for money on GoFundMe or KickStarter that turn out to be scams. Since I cannot accurately determine who is legitimate and who is a thief I give nothing to any of them.
